Chapter 7 - The Woman Who Was Erased From My Family

The door handle moved again.

Slowly.

Carefully.

Someone wasn't trying to break in.

Someone knew they didn't have to.

They had a key.

I stood frozen in the middle of my apartment, staring at the lock.

My phone was still in my hand.

Lily's final message was glowing on the screen.

Don't open the door. He already has a key.

My heart was pounding.

Because there was only one person I knew who had a key.

Elias.

But the voice I heard on Lily's phone wasn't his.

It was older.

Calmer.

More dangerous.

The same voice that appeared in my mother's recording.

The same voice that had known about everything before I did.

The handle stopped moving.

For a few seconds, there was silence.

Then a voice came from the other side.

"Ella."

My blood went cold.

Not because I recognized it.

Because I didn't.

It wasn't Elias.

It wasn't my father.

It wasn't anyone I trusted.

"Ella, I know you're inside."

I stepped backward.

My eyes moved around the room.

There was nowhere to hide.

No one to call.

Everyone I thought could protect me had already hidden something from me.

My phone buzzed.

A message from Rebecca.

Where are you? Answer me.

I typed quickly.

Someone is outside.

Before I could send it, another message appeared.

Not from Rebecca.

From Elias.

Don't open the door.

I stared at the screen.

A second message appeared.

For once, listen to me.

I almost laughed.

The man who spent two years lying to me was telling me to trust him.

Then came the third message.

The person outside is the reason your sister disappeared.

I looked back at the door.

My breathing stopped.

The handle moved again.

Then the person outside whispered:

"Ella, I know about Lily."

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Nobody knew I had spoken to her.

Nobody except...

I slowly looked at the screen.

Elias.

I didn't open the door.

I waited.

Ten seconds.

Twenty.

One minute.

Then the footsteps moved away.

I didn't relax.

Because I knew one thing.

The person outside wanted me to know they could enter anytime.

That was the message.

Fear.

Control.

A warning.

I grabbed my bag and left through the emergency exit.

I drove directly to Rebecca's office.

When she saw my face, she immediately stood.

"What happened?"

I placed my phone on the table.

Then I showed her Lily's message.

Rebecca read it.

Her expression changed.

"Ella..."

"What?"

She hesitated.

"You need to know something."

I hated those words.

Every secret in my life started with them.

"What?"

Rebecca walked to her filing cabinet.

She removed a small box.

"I found this after your mother died."

I stared at it.

"Why didn't you give it to me?"

"Because your father asked me not to."

I looked at her.

"Of course he did."

She looked ashamed.

"Ella, listen."

"No."

My voice became sharper.

"I am done listening to people explain why they hid my life from me."

Rebecca nodded slowly.

"You're right."

She opened the box.

Inside was a small necklace.

A child's necklace.

A silver heart.

I touched it.

And immediately felt something strange.

Like a memory that wasn't mine.

My mother holding a baby.

A little girl laughing.

A voice saying:

"Promise you won't forget me."

I pulled my hand away.

"What is this?"

Rebecca looked at the necklace.

"Your mother found it after Lily disappeared."

"Why keep it?"

"Because she believed Lily was still alive."

I stared at her.

"Everyone told me she was dead."

Rebecca nodded.

"Everyone except your mother."

The next morning, my father came to Rebecca's office.

He looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

Like carrying secrets for years had finally become too heavy.

"Ella."

I didn't answer.

He sat across from me.

"I should have told you."

"Yes."

The honesty surprised him.

I continued.

"You should have."

He looked down.

"Your mother and I made mistakes."

"Mistakes?"

I laughed softly.

"My entire life was built on things people decided I couldn't handle."

My father took a deep breath.

"After Lily disappeared, your mother spent years searching."

"For her?"

"Yes."

"Did she find her?"

My father looked at me.

And I knew.

Before he spoke.

"Yes."

The room went silent.

I felt my heartbeat in my ears.

"When?"

"Two years before she died."

I froze.

"She found Lily?"

My father nodded.

"Then why didn't she tell me?"

"Because Lily was hiding."

"From who?"

My father looked at the floor.

"From Cynthia."

My hands became cold.

Again.

Cynthia.

Everything returned to her.

"Why?"

My father hesitated.

Then he said:

"Because Cynthia was the person who arranged Lily's disappearance."

I stood up.

"What?"

My father continued.

"Your mother discovered that Lily was taken because of a family secret."

"What secret?"

He looked at Rebecca.

Then at me.

"The reason Elias entered your life."

I felt sick.

"What does Lily have to do with Elias?"

My father reached into his jacket.

He removed an old photograph.

He placed it on the table.

I looked down.

And my entire world stopped.

It was Lily.

Older.

Not a baby.

A young woman.

Standing beside someone.

Someone I recognized.

Elias.

But the date on the photograph was impossible.

It was taken fifteen years ago.

Before I met him.

Before he entered my life.

Before I even knew his name.

My fingers shook.

"Elias knew Lily."

My father nodded.

"Yes."

"How?"

Nobody answered.

Then Rebecca whispered:

"Because Elias wasn't searching for your family's money."

She looked at me.

"He was searching for his own truth."

I spent the next several hours going through everything.

Every document.

Every photo.

Every recording.

And slowly, the story changed.

Elias wasn't simply a man trying to steal my apartment.

He was connected to my family long before I knew him.

But that didn't erase what he did.

He lied.

He manipulated me.

He planned to destroy my marriage.

The truth didn't make him innocent.

It only made everything more complicated.

Then I found something.

A document hidden behind the photograph.

A letter.

Not from my mother.

From Lily.

My hands shook as I opened it.

Ella,

If you are reading this, then I finally failed to stay away.

My sister.

I had a sister.

And she had been alive all this time.

I continued.

I need you to understand something about Elias.

He did not come into your life to hurt you.

I stopped.

That wasn't possible.

The man who betrayed me?

The man who planned to replace me?

The man who laughed about me?

My eyes moved down.

But he made a choice that destroyed everything.

Because he was afraid of the truth.

A noise came from the hallway.

Everyone looked up.

The office door opened.

No knock.

No warning.

Elias stood there.

His face looked different.

Not cold.

Not confident.

Broken.

My father immediately stood.

"What are you doing here?"

Elias looked only at me.

"Ella."

I didn't move.

"Why are you here?"

He swallowed.

"Because you deserve to know what really happened."

I laughed.

"Now?"

His eyes lowered.

"I know how it looks."

"No."

My voice was calm.

"You don't."

He stepped forward.

"I never wanted to hurt you."

"But you did."

He closed his eyes.

"I know."

For the first time, Elias looked like the man I thought I married.

Not the actor.

Not the liar.

Just a man carrying something heavy.

Then he placed something on the table.

A small black memory card.

My breath stopped.

Because I recognized it.

It was the same type of card my mother used.

"Ella..."

He looked at me.

"This is the last thing Lily wanted you to see."

I stared at the card.

"What is it?"

Elias whispered:

"The truth about who actually ordered your sister's disappearance."

Before I could answer, the office lights suddenly went off.

The room became dark.

Then my phone received one final message.

From Lily.

Do not let Elias give you that card.

May you like

A second message appeared.

Because he was the person who helped them find me.
