Chapter 5 - The Video My Mother Left Behind

The laptop screen showed one file.

A single video.

The title made my hands go cold.

THE NIGHT YOUR MOTHER DISAPPEARED

I stared at the words.

Because my mother had not disappeared.

That was the story everyone told me.

She had gotten sick.

She had fought.

She had lost.

That was how I remembered it.

That was how everyone explained it.

But now, standing inside my apartment with a hidden flash drive in my hand, I realized something terrifying.

Maybe I had never known the truth.

"Ella."

Rebecca's voice pulled me back.

I looked at her.

"What if this changes everything?"

She didn't answer.

Because she already knew.

It would.

I inserted the flash drive again.

The video loaded.

No music.

No introduction.

Just a dark room.

Then my mother's face appeared on the screen.

Older than the photos I remembered.

Tired.

Scared.

But still my mother.

My knees almost gave out.

"Hello, Ella."

Her voice.

After six years.

A voice I thought I would never hear again.

"If you are watching this, then something happened that I hoped would never happen."

I covered my mouth.

Rebecca looked away.

Even she couldn't watch.

My mother continued.

"I don't know when you will find this. I don't know who will be standing beside you when you do."

She paused.

Then looked directly into the camera.

"But if Elias Carter is already in your life..."

My heart stopped.

My mother knew.

"He found you."

The screen went silent for a second.

Then my mother's voice became softer.

"Ella, I need you to understand something. The man you know as Elias did not enter your life by accident."

I closed my eyes.

Every memory hurt.

The first date.

The first kiss.

The proposal.

All of it.

A carefully designed performance.

"He was searching for something your father and I protected."

I looked at Rebecca.

"What did she mean?"

Rebecca shook her head.

"I don't know."

My mother continued.

"When I discovered who he really was, it was already too late."

The video flickered.

She looked behind her.

Like she was afraid someone might enter.

"Elias is not working alone."

My breathing became heavier.

"Cynthia knows."

My fingers tightened around the flash drive.

"Brenda knows."

The names.

The same names from the recording.

The same people who smiled beside me at my wedding.

"But there is one person you need to be careful with."

My mother looked directly at the camera.

And said:

"Do not trust Jonathan."

My heart stopped.

My father's name.

No.

I immediately looked at Rebecca.

She looked just as shocked.

My mother continued.

"I know this will hurt you. I know you will want to believe your father had no part in this."

The video paused.

Then she whispered:

"But you need to ask him why he lied about the night I died."

The screen went black.

I couldn't move.

My entire life had just shifted.

My father.

The man who raised me.

The man who protected me.

The man who promised he would always tell me the truth.

Now he was part of the mystery.

My phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Dad.

I didn't answer.

It rang again.

Then again.

Rebecca watched me.

"You need to talk to him."

I shook my head.

"Not yet."

"Why?"

"Because if he knows I saw this..."

I looked at the laptop.

"He will know exactly how much I know."

I didn't sleep that night.

I watched the video again.

And again.

I searched every frame.

Every sound.

Every detail.

At the end of the video, before it cut off, there was something I hadn't noticed.

A reflection.

Behind my mother.

A person standing in the doorway.

I paused the screen.

Zoomed in.

The image became blurry.

But I could see enough.

A man's hand.

A dark suit.

A wedding ring.

My stomach turned.

"Rebecca."

She walked over.

"What?"

I pointed.

"Look."

She stared at the screen.

Then slowly whispered:

"No."

"What?"

She stepped back.

"That ring."

"What about it?"

She looked at me.

"I've seen it before."

My heart started beating faster.

"Where?"

She didn't answer immediately.

Then she said:

"On Elias."

The next morning, I went to see my father.

Not because I trusted him.

Because I needed answers.

His office was on the top floor of his company building.

The same place where I used to visit him as a child.

The same place where he would lift me onto his desk and tell me I could become anything.

Now I walked through those doors wondering if he had been protecting me...

Or controlling me.

His assistant tried to stop me.

"Mr. Wilson is in a meeting."

"I don't care."

She looked surprised.

Nobody spoke to my father that way.

But I wasn't the same person who left this building years ago.

I opened the door.

My father looked up.

The moment he saw my face, he knew.

"You watched it."

I froze.

"You knew about the video."

He didn't deny it.

"Yes."

My chest tightened.

"How long?"

"Ella..."

"How long did you know my mother left that for me?"

He looked away.

That hurt more than anger.

Because it meant there was something.

"You promised me you would never lie."

My father stood.

"I was trying to protect you."

"Everyone says that."

My voice cracked.

"Everyone says they are protecting me while they hide everything."

Silence.

Then my father said:

"Your mother was wrong about one thing."

I stared at him.

"What?"

"She thought Elias wanted your inheritance."

He walked toward the window.

"He wanted something much more valuable."

"What?"

My father looked back at me.

"The information your grandfather left behind."

I frowned.

"My grandfather?"

"Your mother's father."

I had never heard anything about this.

"My grandfather died before I was born."

"Exactly."

My father opened a locked drawer.

Inside was a folder.

He placed it on the desk.

"This is what Elias has been looking for."

I opened it.

Inside were old documents.

Bank records.

Property records.

A list of names.

Then I saw something.

A name I recognized.

Cynthia Carter.

My eyes widened.

"She was connected to my grandfather?"

My father nodded.

"Your mother discovered Cynthia was involved with him before she married me."

I looked confused.

"What are you saying?"

My father's expression became serious.

"Your mother believed Cynthia was not just trying to steal from you."

"Then what was she trying to do?"

My father didn't answer.

Instead, he handed me another document.

A birth certificate.

I looked down.

Then froze.

Because the name on it wasn't mine.

It belonged to someone else.

Someone connected to Elias.

Someone who should not exist.

"What is this?"

My father whispered:

"The reason Elias needed to marry you."

I returned home that evening with the document hidden inside my bag.

My mind was racing.

Too many secrets.

Too many lies.

Too many people who claimed they were protecting me.

I placed the paper on the table.

I was about to call Rebecca when my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Elias.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

"I know you met your father today."

My blood ran cold.

Another message appeared.

"You should ask him why he never told you about your sister."

I stared at the screen.

Sister?

That word didn't make sense.

I didn't have a sister.

Then a third message appeared.

A photo.

My hands started shaking.

It was a picture taken moments ago.

Inside my apartment.

My bedroom.

The place where I was standing.

May you like

And in the photo, behind me...

Someone was already there.
