Chapter 12 - The Road Where Elaine Died

The abandoned crash site was not abandoned.

Someone had maintained it.

That was the first thing Penny noticed.

The road had changed over twenty-two years, but the wooded embankment remained.

Below it sat the rusted shell of Elaine’s car.

Preserved.

Hidden beneath a crude structure.

“Why keep it?” Claire whispered.

Penny knew.

“Evidence.”

Roman searched the vehicle.

Under the passenger seat he found a metal compartment.

Empty.

Elaine stared.

“It was here.”

“What?” Penny asked.

“Gabriel’s original ledger.”

Benjamin had reached it first.

Footsteps sounded above.

Bradley descended the slope.

Roman’s guards surrounded him.

Bradley raised his hands.

“I’m helping.”

Penny looked at him.

“Why?”

He laughed bitterly.

“Because my brother just tried to have me killed.”

“That’s not redemption.”

“I know.”

For once, Bradley did not defend himself.

He looked at Penny.

“I’m sorry.”

She waited.

No excuse followed.

It was the first real apology he had ever given her.

Penny nodded.

“I hear you.”

Bradley looked almost hopeful.

She continued.

“That doesn’t mean you get me back.”

Hope disappeared.

“I know.”

“And it doesn’t erase what you did.”

“I know.”

Penny believed him.

That was enough.

Not forgiveness.

Not reconciliation.

Just truth.

Bradley told them Benjamin had spent years manipulating both Valerius and Vale networks.

Benjamin’s father, Thomas Mercer, had been an accountant connected to Thomas Vale.

After the old network collapsed, Benjamin rebuilt it.

“The Widow was useful,” Bradley said. “Nobody looked for a man because everyone assumed the title belonged to a woman.”

Penny almost admired the simplicity.

Almost.

“Where is he?”

Bradley pointed toward an abandoned church beyond the trees.

They approached carefully.

Inside, Benjamin waited.

The ledger sat on the altar.

He had nowhere to go.

Police surrounded the area.

Benjamin looked at Penny.

“You could have been extraordinary.”

Penny laughed.

“I am.”

He frowned.

“I meant powerful.”

“So did I.”

Roman’s mouth almost curved.

Benjamin opened the ledger.

“Your mother’s shares. Gabriel’s evidence. Roman’s empire. You could control all of it.”

“I don’t want an empire.”

“Everyone wants power.”

“No.”

Penny looked at Roman.

“Some people want choice.”

Then at Claire.

“Some want family.”

Then Elaine.

“Some want truth.”

Finally Bradley.

“And some confuse control with love.”

Bradley lowered his eyes.

Benjamin reached inside his jacket.

Roman moved.

Federal agents shouted.

Benjamin stopped.

Slowly removed his hand.

Empty.

Then smiled.

“You still haven’t found the last account.”

Penny froze.

“What?”

Benjamin laughed.

“The account that paid for Elaine’s crash.”

Elaine went pale.

“Who?”

Benjamin looked at Vittorio, who had arrived with agents.

“You really never knew?”

Vittorio stared.

Benjamin pointed at the ledger.

Penny opened it.

One transaction was circled.

Payment authorization.

Initials.

S.V.

Roman whispered, “Sofia.”

Elaine closed her eyes.

Sofia had ordered the crash.

Not Margaret.

Not Thomas.

Sofia.

The woman Elaine had believed was helping her.

Penny felt the final piece settle.

Sofia had been in the car because she changed her mind too late.

“She tried to stop it,” Elaine whispered.

Vittorio nodded.

“She ordered the hit, then got into Elaine’s car to warn her.”

Roman looked sick.

“She caused it and nearly died trying to undo it.”

There was no clean villainy.

No clean heroism.

Only choices.

Some unforgivable.

Some redeeming.

Benjamin used the distraction.

He ran.

Agents pursued.

A shot sounded outside.

Penny flinched.

Roman stayed beside her.

Minutes later, an agent returned.

“Benjamin Mercer is in custody.”

Penny exhaled.

It should have felt finished.

It did not.

Roman’s phone rang.

Luca.

Roman answered.

Then his face changed.

“What?”

Penny looked at him.

Roman lowered the phone.

“Sofia disappeared from federal custody.”

Vittorio stared.

“How?”

“Someone inside helped her.”

Penny felt exhaustion turn into dread.

Then Elaine looked toward the church entrance.

An elderly woman stood there.

Sofia.

No weapon.

No guards.

She looked directly at Penny.

“I didn’t escape.”

Federal agents raised their weapons.

Sofia lifted her hands.

“I came back.”

Roman stared at his mother.

“Why?”

Sofia looked at Elaine.

“Because there is one truth Benjamin never knew.”

Elaine went still.

Sofia took one step forward.

“The crash wasn’t meant to kill Elaine.”

Penny’s stomach tightened.

“Then who?”

May you like

Sofia looked at her.

“You.”
