Chapter 11 - The Last Account

Penny ran.

Roman caught the hidden door before it closed.

Elaine was gone.

The passage led to a private service elevator.

Roman hit the call button.

Nothing.

Claire checked the control panel.

“Disabled.”

Penny looked at Sofia’s phone.

One application remained open.

A banking app.

An account balance showed zero.

“Why empty everything now?”

Roman looked.

“Escape.”

“No.”

Penny shook her head.

“People escaping move money somewhere.”

She examined the transaction history.

“All the accounts were closed.”

“To hide evidence?”

“No.”

Penny enlarged the timestamps.

“They were closed before we arrived.”

Roman understood.

“Sofia knew she would lose.”

“Yes.”

“So tonight wasn’t her plan.”

“No.”

Penny’s mind accelerated.

“Sofia was bait.”

Claire looked at her.

“For us?”

“For Elaine.”

They returned to the main room.

Vittorio had been freed.

Bradley too.

Penny walked straight to him.

“Who wanted my mother?”

Bradley looked confused.

“I don’t know.”

“You know more than you admitted.”

“No.”

Penny slammed Sofia’s phone onto the table.

“Bradley.”

He looked at her.

Something in her face convinced him.

“There was another person.”

Roman stepped closer.

Bradley swallowed.

“The first time the Widow contacted me, the voice was male.”

Everyone went silent.

“Male?” Penny asked.

“Yes.”

“Who?”

“I never knew.”

“What did he want?”

“You.”

“Why?”

“He said Elaine would surface if you were threatened.”

Penny felt sick.

She had never been the target.

She had been bait.

All of it.

Bradley.

The accounts.

The trust.

Someone wanted Elaine.

“Why?”

Vittorio answered.

“Because Elaine knows the original account.”

Penny turned.

“What account?”

“The first fund Gabriel created.”

“Her father?” Claire asked.

Vittorio nodded.

“Gabriel collected evidence on everyone involved in the old organization. Names. Judges. Officials. Companies. He put it behind an encrypted financial key.”

“And Elaine knows where?”

“Yes.”

Roman looked at Vittorio.

“You knew?”

“I knew it existed.”

Penny grabbed her phone.

Elaine’s number went directly to voicemail.

Then a text arrived.

From Elaine.

DON’T FOLLOW ME.

Penny stared.

A second message.

THIS ENDS WITH ME.

“No.”

She called.

Nothing.

Claire began tracing the phone.

Roman organized vehicles.

Penny studied Sofia’s banking history again.

One account had not been closed.

Tiny balance.

$1.

“Why leave one dollar?”

She opened it.

The account name was GABRIEL FOUNDATION.

Penny froze.

“Claire.”

Her sister looked.

“Can you trace the authentication?”

Claire worked.

“Last login twelve minutes ago.”

“Location?”

“Brooklyn.”

Roman recognized the coordinates.

“Old Valerius warehouse.”

They drove.

Police were already moving toward the penthouse because Penny’s evidence release had triggered federal attention.

Roman could no longer keep the family conflict private.

That was exactly what Penny wanted.

Secrets had created this nightmare.

Exposure would end it.

They reached the warehouse.

Elaine’s car sat outside.

Inside, lights burned on the second floor.

Roman tried to stop Penny at the entrance.

She looked at him.

“Don’t.”

“I was going to say stay behind me.”

“That’s acceptable.”

They entered.

No guards.

No gunfire.

Just silence.

Upstairs they found Elaine sitting at a table.

Alone.

Penny ran to her.

“Mom.”

Elaine looked up.

Relief flooded her face.

Then fear.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“Who took you?”

Elaine shook her head.

“No one.”

Penny stopped.

“What?”

“I left.”

“Why?”

“To meet him.”

“Who?”

Elaine looked toward the darkness behind them.

A man stepped forward.

Bradley.

Penny turned.

Impossible.

Bradley had been at the penthouse.

Yet there he stood.

Same face.

Same height.

Different expression.

Roman raised his weapon.

The man laughed.

“Wrong Mercer.”

Penny stared.

Bradley had a brother.

A twin.

The man smiled.

“Benjamin Mercer.”

Penny’s stomach dropped.

Elaine whispered, “He’s the one who recruited Bradley.”

Benjamin nodded.

“My brother always was easy to manipulate.”

“You’re the Widow?”

Benjamin smiled.

“I prefer architect.”

Penny’s disgust sharpened.

“You used your own brother.”

“I used everyone.”

“Why my mother?”

Benjamin looked at Elaine.

“Because she has Gabriel’s key.”

Elaine placed something on the table.

A simple brass key.

Benjamin reached for it.

Penny laughed.

He stopped.

“What?”

“You actually think that’s it?”

Benjamin looked at Elaine.

Elaine smiled faintly.

Penny understood.

Her mother had learned something from her.

Never let the other person define the transaction.

Penny took out her phone.

“The key isn’t physical.”

Benjamin’s expression changed.

“It’s a sequence.”

Claire appeared behind Roman.

“And we already found it.”

Benjamin moved toward Penny.

Roman blocked him.

Benjamin smiled.

“You won’t shoot me.”

Roman said nothing.

“Too many witnesses.”

Roman’s voice was calm.

“That’s why I’m not going to.”

Sirens sounded outside.

Benjamin’s smile disappeared.

Penny stepped forward.

“You built your entire system on secrets.”

Police lights flashed through the warehouse windows.

“So I removed the secrets.”

Benjamin looked toward the exits.

Federal agents entered below.

For the first time, the architect looked trapped.

Then Elaine gasped.

Penny turned.

A red dot appeared on Elaine’s chest.

Sniper.

Roman shouted.

Everyone dropped.

A shot shattered the window.

Benjamin ran.

Roman’s men followed.

Penny crawled toward Elaine.

“Mom!”

“I’m okay.”

The bullet had missed.

Claire pointed toward the roof.

“Shooter moved.”

Roman returned.

“Benjamin escaped through the east stairwell.”

Penny’s phone buzzed.

A message.

From Bradley.

I KNOW WHERE HE’S GOING.

Penny opened it.

Another message arrived.

HE’S GOING TO THE PLACE YOUR MOTHER DIED.

Then Bradley sent one final photograph.

The burned remains of Elaine’s old car.

May you like

Behind it stood a figure.

Holding a gun.
