Chapter 9 - The Second Chance They Never Expected

For the first time in years, Marco Moretti felt uncertain.

Not afraid.

Never afraid.

But uncertain.

And that feeling bothered him more than fear ever could.

Fear was simple.

Fear told you there was danger.

Fear made you move.

But uncertainty forced you to question everything you believed.

The people you trusted.

The choices you made.

The person you became.

Marco stood alone in his office, looking at the city through the large glass windows.

The same city that once represented everything he had built.

Power.

Influence.

Control.

But now he saw something different.

A reminder.

A reminder that control was never absolute.

Someone had spent years hiding in the shadows.

Someone had manipulated people around him.

Someone had almost ended his life without ever standing in front of him.

The Ghost.

A name without a face.

A threat without a location.

And the only person who could lead Marco closer to the truth was the same person who had once betrayed him.

Daniel Cross.

The next morning, Marco sat across from Daniel again.

This time, there were no guards surrounding him.

No threats.

No anger.

Only two men who had once considered each other brothers.

"You know where he is," Marco said.

Daniel looked down.

"I don't."

Marco remained silent.

Daniel sighed.

"But I know where he might go."

That caught Marco's attention.

"Explain."

Daniel looked at the table.

"The Ghost doesn't disappear randomly."

"Then what does he do?"

"He waits."

A pause.

"He watches."

Daniel looked up.

"He studies people until he knows exactly what they will do."

Marco nodded slowly.

That sounded familiar.

Because that was exactly what had happened.

The Ghost knew Marco's schedule.

His habits.

His security.

He had not attacked quickly.

He had prepared.

"Where would someone like that hide?" Marco asked.

Daniel thought carefully.

"Somewhere connected to your past."

Marco's expression changed.

"My past?"

Daniel nodded.

"He doesn't want to destroy the man you are now."

A pause.

"He wants to destroy the reason you became that man."

Those words stayed with Marco.

Because deep down, he knew Daniel was right.

The Ghost was not fighting his power.

He was fighting his history.

"Tell me everything about before."

Daniel looked uncomfortable.

"You never talk about that time."

"Because nobody asked."

A silence followed.

Then Daniel finally spoke.

"Before people feared you, Marco, you were different."

Marco looked away.

"I know."

"You wanted to build something."

"I did."

Daniel continued.

"You believed you could protect people without becoming someone they feared."

Marco closed his eyes briefly.

Memories came back.

A younger version of himself.

Someone who believed strength was meant to protect.

Not control.

Someone who had not yet learned how cruel the world could be.

"What changed?" Daniel asked quietly.

Marco looked at him.

"You already know."

Daniel nodded.

Yes.

He knew.

Because he had been there.

The moment Marco lost people he cared about.

The moment he realized kindness alone was not enough.

The moment he decided fear was a better shield than trust.

But Daniel also knew something else.

Marco had never completely lost the person he used to be.

Ethan proved that.

The boy who warned him.

The boy who asked if trapped people could be forgiven.

The boy who saw a human being before seeing power.

"There's something else," Daniel said.

Marco looked back.

"What?"

"The Ghost knows about Ethan."

The room became completely silent.

Marco's expression changed instantly.

Not anger.

Something colder.

Protectiveness.

"What do you mean?"

"Before I left, I received a message."

Daniel swallowed.

"It said..."

He hesitated.

Marco stood.

"Say it."

Daniel looked at him.

"It said: 'The child who heard the truth will hear the truth again.'"

The words felt like a direct threat.

Marco's entire body became still.

Because for the first time, this was not about him.

Not his position.

Not his enemies.

Not his past.

Ethan.

The boy who had simply tried to help.

Marco immediately reached for his phone.

"Where is Ethan?"

"With his mother."

"Location?"

"Your security team has them."

Marco called Adrian.

The call connected immediately.

"Where are they?"

A pause.

Then Adrian's voice changed.

"Marco."

That was enough.

Something was wrong.

"What happened?"

"We lost contact five minutes ago."

Marco's expression hardened.

"Explain."

"The security team assigned to protect them isn't answering."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then Marco moved.

Fast.

The calm disappeared.

The patience disappeared.

Only one thought remained.

Ethan.

The safe house was quiet when Marco arrived.

Too quiet.

The front door was open.

The lights were still on.

A glass of water sat untouched on the table.

A child's notebook rested on the chair.

But Ethan was gone.

Sarah was gone.

Marco walked slowly through the room.

He noticed details others would miss.

A broken picture frame.

A chair moved slightly.

A mark near the doorway.

No chaos.

No struggle.

Whoever took them was careful.

Professional.

Adrian looked around.

"They knew exactly what they were doing."

Marco picked up Ethan's notebook.

The last page had a drawing.

The airport.

Gate 22.

The plane.

And three people.

Ethan.

Marco.

And a shadow behind them.

Marco stared at it.

"He knew."

Adrian looked at him.

"Who?"

"The Ghost."

Marco closed the notebook.

"He knew Ethan would be important."

A phone rang.

Everyone froze.

Unknown number.

Marco answered.

"Where are they?"

The voice was distorted.

Calm.

Almost emotionless.

"You always were predictable, Marco."

Marco's eyes narrowed.

"Who are you?"

A quiet laugh.

"You spent years trying to understand enemies."

A pause.

"But you never understood yourself."

Marco remained silent.

The voice continued.

"The boy changed everything."

"Where is Ethan?"

"You care about him."

It was not a question.

It was a statement.

Marco's hand tightened.

"Where is he?"

"You want to know the funny thing?"

The voice continued.

"When I planned this, I expected you to survive."

Marco frowned.

"What?"

"I knew someone would notice something."

A pause.

"I knew your security would investigate."

A pause.

"But I never expected him."

Silence.

"The child."

Marco's expression changed.

The Ghost continued.

"He ruined everything."

Marco's voice became colder.

"Then you made one mistake."

"What mistake?"

"You underestimated him."

A long pause.

Then the voice answered.

"Maybe."

The call ended.

Marco stared at the phone.

For the first time, he understood.

The Ghost was not only trying to remove him.

He was trying to prove a point.

He wanted Marco to return to the person he used to be.

The person who trusted nobody.

The person who solved every problem through fear.

But Ethan had changed something.

And The Ghost did not understand that.

Because the old Marco would have hunted him alone.

The old Marco would have chosen revenge.

But the man standing there now had learned something.

Strength was not only about destroying enemies.

Sometimes strength was protecting someone who had no power at all.

Marco looked at Adrian.

"Find them."

Adrian nodded.

"We will."

Marco looked at Ethan's notebook one more time.

The drawing of the shadow behind them.

A child had seen something before anyone else.

Again.

Marco closed the notebook.

"The Ghost wanted me to become the man I used to be."

Adrian waited.

Marco looked toward the door.

"But he forgot something."

"What?"

Marco held the notebook tightly.

"Ethan showed me there was another way."

Outside, the city lights continued shining.

Somewhere in the darkness, The Ghost believed he had finally gained control.

He believed he had taken away Marco's weakness.

But he did not understand.

Ethan Carter was never Marco's weakness.

May you like

He was the reason Marco remembered his strength.

And now Marco Moretti was coming for them.
