Chapter 8 - A Promise Between Two Different Worlds

Daniel Cross had always been the person Marco Moretti trusted most.

That was what made the truth hurt.

For years, Daniel had been the man standing beside him during difficult decisions.

He knew Marco's schedule.

He knew his habits.

He knew which people Marco trusted and which people he watched carefully.

Daniel was not a bodyguard.

Not a soldier.

Not someone who followed orders without question.

He was the person who helped Marco organize everything.

The person who understood the entire structure behind his life.

And that was exactly why he was dangerous.

Because betrayal from an enemy was expected.

Betrayal from a friend was something else.

Marco stood silently in the room, holding the photograph Adrian had given him.

Daniel Cross.

The man who had worked beside him for almost a decade.

The man who knew everything.

"Ethan."

The boy looked up.

Marco noticed the concern in his eyes.

Children were more observant than adults gave them credit for.

They noticed changes in voices.

Expressions.

Silence.

"What happened?" Ethan asked.

Marco looked at him.

For a moment, he considered lying.

He could say everything was fine.

He could tell the boy it was just another problem adults needed to solve.

But Ethan had already been honest with him when it mattered most.

Marco owed him the same honesty.

"Someone close to me may have betrayed me."

Ethan looked confused.

"Someone you trusted?"

Marco nodded.

"Yes."

The boy lowered his eyes.

"That must hurt."

The simple sentence hit harder than Marco expected.

Because it was true.

Marco had spent years preparing for enemies.

He had prepared for attacks.

He had prepared for people wanting what he had.

But he had never prepared for someone he trusted choosing to hurt him.

"Yes," Marco admitted.

"It does."

Across the room, Sarah watched quietly.

She had learned more about Marco Moretti in the last twenty-four hours than she ever expected.

The world knew him as a powerful man.

A dangerous man.

Someone people avoided.

But standing there, speaking with her son, she saw something different.

A man who had spent years protecting himself because he believed nobody else would.

Adrian entered the room.

"Marco."

The tone immediately changed.

Marco looked up.

"What?"

"We found Daniel."

A pause.

"Where?"

"At one of his properties."

Marco grabbed his coat.

"Let's go."

Sarah stood immediately.

"Ethan is not coming."

Marco stopped.

She was right.

Ethan had already been pulled too far into something dangerous.

"I agree."

Ethan looked disappointed.

"But I can help."

Marco turned toward him.

"No."

The answer was firm.

Not angry.

"No?"

Marco walked closer.

"Ethan, you helped because you were the only person who knew what was happening."

The boy listened.

"But now this is different."

"Why?"

"Because now people know you know."

Ethan became quiet.

That was the truth.

The moment he spoke, he changed everything.

The boy who heard a secret became part of the secret.

Marco looked at Sarah.

"Keep him safe."

She nodded.

For the first time, she trusted that Marco meant it.

Not because of his power.

Because of the way he looked at Ethan.

Like he was responsible for protecting him.

Not using him.

Daniel Cross sat alone in the empty office.

The room was dark.

The city lights outside reflected against the windows.

He looked nothing like the man from Marco's memories.

The confident assistant.

The calm advisor.

The loyal friend.

Now he looked exhausted.

Like someone who had been carrying a secret too heavy for too long.

When Marco entered, Daniel did not look surprised.

"You found me."

Marco closed the door behind him.

"Yes."

Daniel looked down.

"I knew you would."

The silence between them was uncomfortable.

Not because there was anger.

Because there was history.

Too much history.

"Why?" Marco asked.

Daniel closed his eyes.

That single word carried years of friendship.

Why did you betray me?

Why did you try to kill me?

Why did you become the person who wanted me gone?

"I never wanted you dead."

Marco's expression remained cold.

"But you arranged my flight."

Daniel looked away.

"I know."

"You gave someone my schedule."

"I know."

"You knew what would happen."

Daniel's silence was the answer.

Marco stepped closer.

"Who is The Ghost?"

Daniel looked up.

For the first time, real fear appeared.

Not fear of Marco.

Fear of the name.

"You don't understand what you are dealing with."

Marco's eyes narrowed.

"Then explain."

Daniel shook his head.

"You think this is about power."

A pause.

"It's not."

Marco waited.

"It's about control."

Daniel looked toward the window.

"The Ghost doesn't want your position. He doesn't want your money."

"Then what does he want?"

Daniel looked at him.

"He wants everything you built to collapse."

Marco studied him.

"Why?"

Daniel laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because it was painful.

"Because you were never supposed to become who you became."

The words confused Marco.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked down.

"Years ago, before everyone feared you..."

He stopped.

"Before the reputation."

Marco listened.

"There were people who believed you could change things."

A pause.

"Some people wanted you to become something different."

Marco's expression hardened.

"You are talking about the past."

"Yes."

"And The Ghost is connected to it?"

Daniel nodded slowly.

"Very."

Marco remained silent.

Because he realized something.

This was not a simple attack.

It was personal.

Someone had been waiting years.

Waiting for the right moment.

Waiting for Marco to become powerful enough to destroy.

"Who is he?"

Daniel looked at him.

"I don't know."

Marco almost became angry.

"Everyone says that."

"Because it's true."

Daniel leaned forward.

"The Ghost never reveals himself."

"Then how do you know him?"

Daniel hesitated.

"Because I worked for him."

The room became silent.

Marco stared at him.

"What?"

Daniel looked ashamed.

"I didn't know at first."

"When did you find out?"

"After I had already gone too far."

Marco looked away.

He understood the pattern.

Vincent.

Thomas.

Daniel.

Different people.

Same trap.

The Ghost found weaknesses.

Then he controlled them.

"What did he have on you?"

Daniel's eyes became distant.

"My sister."

Marco looked back.

"Your sister?"

Daniel nodded.

"She was in trouble. Real trouble."

A pause.

"He offered help."

Marco understood.

Then came the price.

"He always offers help," Daniel said.

"But he never gives it."

Marco looked at him.

"Where is he now?"

Daniel shook his head.

"I don't know."

Marco stepped closer.

"Daniel."

"I swear."

Daniel's voice cracked.

"I don't know."

For the first time, Marco saw something unexpected.

Regret.

Real regret.

"You almost killed me."

Daniel lowered his head.

"I know."

"Why didn't you stop?"

Daniel looked up.

"Because I was afraid."

The answer was honest.

And somehow that made it worse.

Marco had spent years believing betrayal came from greed.

From ambition.

From hatred.

But sometimes betrayal came from fear.

A different kind of weakness.

A few hours later, Marco returned.

Ethan was still awake.

The boy immediately looked at his face.

"You found him."

Marco nodded.

"Yes."

"Was he the bad guy?"

Marco sat down.

"No."

Ethan looked confused.

"Then why did he do it?"

Marco was quiet.

Then he answered:

"Because sometimes people get trapped."

Ethan thought about that.

"Can trapped people still be forgiven?"

Marco looked at him.

Another difficult question.

One that powerful men rarely asked themselves.

"I don't know."

Ethan nodded.

"Maybe they can try."

Marco looked at the boy.

"Maybe."

Outside, the city continued moving.

The danger was not over.

The Ghost was still hidden.

The truth was still incomplete.

But something had changed.

Marco had spent his entire life believing trust was a weakness.

Now, because of an eight-year-old boy, he was beginning to understand something different.

Trust was not weakness.

Trust was a risk.

And sometimes, the people who took that risk were the ones who reminded you why it mattered.

Marco looked at Ethan.

A child from a completely different world.

A child who knew nothing about power.

Nothing about enemies.

Nothing about fear.

Yet somehow, he had shown more courage than many adults Marco had known.

And Marco made a promise silently.

Not as a powerful man.

Not as someone feared.

But as someone who owed a debt.

He would find The Ghost.

May you like

He would uncover the truth.

And he would make sure Ethan Carter never had to face that darkness alone.
