Chapter 5 - What Happened After the Crash

Stephen lowered the gun.

“Before anyone does something stupid, listen.”

Marcus kept his weapon trained on him.

Elias stepped forward.

Hannah stared.

“You put the number on the formula can.”

“Yes.”

“You entered Adrian’s house.”

“Yes.”

“You sent the messages.”

“Some.”

“Some?”

Elias looked at Stephen.

“Not the threats.”

Stephen swore.

Adrian demanded the truth.

It came slowly.

After Daniel’s crash, Charles had discovered Daniel was alive.

He had secretly moved him to the rehabilitation center because he feared whoever caused the crash would try again.

Richard later moved Daniel to a safe house.

Stephen had discovered the location.

But he claimed he had not killed Daniel.

“I went there because Charles finally told me what was happening.”

Matthew laughed bitterly.

“You expect us to believe that?”

Stephen looked at his son.

“I committed fraud. I manipulated accounts. I forged authorizations through you. I was greedy.”

He paused.

“But I am not a murderer.”

“Daniel?”

“Alive when I left.”

Hannah looked at Richard.

“Is that true?”

“Yes.”

“Then how did he die?”

Elias answered.

“Three weeks later.”

Everyone turned.

Elias had spent four years investigating.

Daniel contacted him after the crash.

The brothers had been estranged because of their father.

Daniel believed Elias’s military background could help protect the evidence.

Elias arrived too late.

He found Daniel dying in the safe house.

Poison.

Slow-acting.

Daniel had enough time to speak.

“He gave me instructions,” Elias said.

“What instructions?”

“To protect Hannah without contacting her.”

Hannah slapped him.

Hard.

“You watched me bury an empty coffin?”

Elias accepted it.

“Yes.”

“You watched me believe he died alone?”

“Yes.”

“You let me struggle?”

“I sent money.”

“I returned every anonymous payment because I thought someone was trying to control me!”

Elias lowered his head.

Adrian understood her fury.

Protection without truth had become another form of cruelty.

“Who poisoned him?” Adrian asked.

Elias looked toward Richard.

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

Elias produced an audio recorder.

Daniel’s final statement.

His voice was weak.

“Hannah, I’m sorry.”

She covered her mouth.

“I thought I could fix this and come home. I was wrong.”

The recording continued.

“Charles didn’t do this. Richard didn’t. Stephen is guilty of stealing, but I don’t think he ordered the crash.”

Stephen looked away.

Then Daniel said:

“The person who tried to kill me knew the investigation before Charles did.”

Marcus stiffened.

Adrian noticed.

Daniel continued.

“Only one person had that information.”

The recording distorted.

A name began.

“Ow—”

Static.

Marcus stepped backward.

Hannah stared at him.

“Owen?”

Marcus’s face changed.

Adrian’s blood ran cold.

Owen Marcus Grant.

The detective.

Marcus raised his hands.

“It wasn’t me.”

Elias pointed a gun at him.

“Daniel said your name.”

“He said part of a name.”

“Convenient.”

Marcus explained that his original partner on the case was Owen Carlisle.

Another detective.

Same first name.

Carlisle had accessed Daniel’s files before Marcus.

Carlisle had later resigned.

Adrian asked where he was.

Marcus answered:

“Head of corporate investigations for Vale Development.”

Adrian knew him.

Carlisle had been hired by Stephen.

Stephen looked horrified.

“I hired him because he was recommended by the police commissioner.”

“No,” Marcus said. “He positioned himself.”

They returned to Vale headquarters.

Carlisle’s office was empty.

His computer had been wiped.

But not completely.

A recovered calendar showed a meeting scheduled for that evening.

Location:

Adrian’s mansion.

With Hannah Mercer.

Adrian immediately called home security.

No response.

Again.

Nothing.

They raced back.

The gates were open.

The guard booth empty.

Adrian ran inside.

“Hannah stays behind me.”

“Absolutely not.”

The kitchen lights were on.

Everything looked normal.

Except Noah’s formula can.

It sat in the center of the marble island.

A photograph leaned against it.

Adrian picked it up.

Charles Vale and Daniel Mercer stood together.

Behind them was Owen Carlisle.

Written beneath the photograph:

ASK WHO REALLY OWNED HARBOR POINT BEFORE THE VALES BOUGHT IT.

Richard whispered:

“Oh, God.”

“What?”

“Hannah’s family.”

She stared.

“What are you talking about?”

Richard explained.

Decades earlier, Hannah’s grandfather had owned a small manufacturing company and several acres at Harbor Point.

The land had been acquired through foreclosure.

Vale Development later bought it.

Hannah shook her head.

“My mother never mentioned property.”

“Because her father lost everything.”

Adrian understood.

Daniel had not stumbled onto random fraud.

He had discovered that Stephen and Carlisle had manipulated property records connected to Hannah’s own family.

The money trail was personal.

Richard pulled county records.

The original parcel was worth hundreds of millions after redevelopment.

Someone had falsified liens to force foreclosure.

Charles had not known.

Daniel discovered it after marrying Hannah.

He was trying to recover what had been stolen from her family.

Then a noise came from upstairs.

Noah cried.

Hannah ran.

Adrian followed.

The nursery door was open.

Noah sat safely in the crib.

Beside him stood a man in a gray suit.

Owen Carlisle.

He held no weapon.

Only a folder.

Marcus raised his gun.

Carlisle smiled.

“You’re four years late, Grant.”

Hannah moved toward Noah.

Carlisle allowed her.

“Why are you here?” Adrian demanded.

“To give you what Daniel died protecting.”

He placed the folder on the dresser.

“Why?”

“Because Stephen isn’t the only man who got greedy.”

Carlisle looked at Richard.

“And I’m not the man who poisoned Daniel.”

Richard went pale.

Carlisle smiled.

“The poison came from inside the safe house.”

He looked directly at the attorney.

“Only three people knew where Daniel’s drinking water was stored.”

Hannah stared at Richard.

Richard whispered:

“No.”

Carlisle continued.

“Charles. Elias.”

May you like

Then he paused.

“And you.”
