Chapter 9 - Kora’s Missing Five Years

Arthur could not move.

Richard Pendleton stepped from the vault.

Older.

Thinner.

Alive.

Arthur laughed.

Then he hit him.

Richard accepted the punch.

Perhaps he expected worse.

“You let me bury you too?”

“I had no choice.”

Arthur turned away.

“I am getting tired of hearing that.”

Richard looked at Kora.

“You survived.”

“Barely.”

His face filled with shame.

“I’m sorry.”

Arthur spun.

“You knew?”

Richard nodded.

Not everything.

Enough.

Richard had survived the poisoning fourteen years earlier.

Silas discovered him before death.

Together they staged the funeral because Richard believed Evelyn would finish the job.

He spent years collecting evidence.

Kora’s father helped him.

That was how Kora became connected to the vault.

Arthur looked at her.

“You knew he was alive?”

“For eleven months.”

That hurt.

Kora saw it.

“I couldn't tell you.”

Arthur walked away.

She followed.

“Arthur.”

“Eleven months.”

“I was imprisoned.”

“You escaped.”

“And spent every day trying to keep you alive.”

He turned.

“You watched me mourn you.”

Kora flinched.

Arthur regretted the words immediately.

She touched her scar.

“You think I chose this?”

“No.”

His anger collapsed.

“No.”

Kora's eyes filled.

“I woke every morning wanting to come home.”

Arthur whispered, “Why didn't you?”

“Because home had cameras.”

She explained.

Daniel Mercer controlled Arthur’s security.

Every route.

Every visitor.

Every message.

Any direct approach would have exposed her.

So she watched from distance.

The grave.

His office.

Restaurants.

She learned his habits while trying to identify Daniel’s network.

“I saw you with Beatrice.”

Arthur looked down.

Kora continued.

“I thought you loved her.”

“I didn't.”

“I know that now.”

“Would it have mattered?”

“Yes.”

The answer came immediately.

Arthur looked at her.

Kora whispered, “It mattered every day.”

Behind them, chaos resumed.

Daniel had entered the vault.

Richard shouted.

The vault did not contain money.

It contained servers.

Documents.

Recordings.

Decades of evidence.

And a dead-man switch connected to federal investigators.

Daniel wanted to sell the information.

Evelyn wanted to release it after killing everyone.

Richard wanted lawful prosecution.

Arthur wanted everyone alive long enough to decide.

For once, he chose the least dramatic option.

“Wyatt, evacuate the cathedral.”

Evelyn screamed, “No!”

Helena grabbed her.

The two women struggled.

Beatrice ran toward her mother.

Conrad shouted.

A gun fired.

Helena fell.

Beatrice caught her.

Blood spread across Helena’s dress.

Conrad broke free from his chair and crawled toward them.

For one moment the Whitmore family ceased being powerful.

They were simply frightened people on a cathedral floor.

Arthur understood something.

Power had disguised everyone for too long.

Daniel emerged from the vault carrying a drive.

Kora recognized it.

“Arthur!”

Daniel ran.

Wyatt pursued him.

Arthur followed.

Through the crypt.

Into the tunnels.

Toward Pier Seventeen.

Daniel reached the warehouse district.

A car waited.

He fired behind him.

Arthur ducked.

Wyatt circled from the opposite side.

Daniel found himself trapped.

He held up the drive.

“One step and this goes into the water.”

Arthur stopped.

“It's copied.”

Daniel laughed.

“You don't know what's on this one.”

“What?”

“Names.”

“Whose?”

“Children.”

Arthur's expression changed.

Daniel smiled.

“The families didn't just move cargo.”

Richard arrived behind them.

His face confirmed it.

Arthur felt sick.

For decades, some criminal factions had trafficked vulnerable people through Crescent City.

Richard had gathered evidence.

That was the true reason he built the vault.

Arthur's own family had profited before he took control.

He had not known.

But ignorance did not erase responsibility.

“Give me the drive,” Arthur said.

Daniel shook his head.

“Twenty million.”

“No.”

“Then it disappears.”

Kora emerged from the tunnel.

Daniel pointed his gun at her.

Arthur froze.

Daniel smiled.

“Still your weakness.”

Kora looked at Arthur.

Then at Daniel.

“No.”

Her damaged voice was barely audible.

“I’m his reason.”

She threw something.

The brass key.

Daniel instinctively looked.

Wyatt tackled him.

The gun fired.

Daniel fell.

The drive skidded across the concrete.

Toward the edge of the pier.

Arthur dove.

His fingers closed around it inches before it dropped into black water.

He turned.

Wyatt had Daniel pinned.

Kora stood unharmed.

Arthur breathed again.

Then Richard’s phone rang.

He answered.

His face changed.

“What?”

Arthur stood.

Richard looked toward the cathedral.

“The gas system activated.”

“But everyone is evacuating.”

Richard shook his head.

“It isn't feeding the cathedral.”

“Where?”

Richard stared at the harbor.

“Pier Seventeen.”

A mechanical hiss began beneath their feet.

Kora looked down.

Arthur smelled something chemical.

Then every warehouse door around them locked simultaneously.

And from the darkness inside Warehouse Four came the sound of dozens of people pounding against the walls...
