Chapter 6 - The Doctor Who Signed Her Death

Elias Miller disappeared before Arthur’s men reached the apartment.
But he left something behind.
A key.
Brass.
Old.
Stamped with a wolf and the number 27.
Arthur recognized the symbol.
His father’s private bank used it before closing fourteen years ago.
Vault 27.
The branch had become a courthouse annex.
By midnight Arthur, Kora, Wyatt, and Beatrice stood beneath it.
Beatrice had insisted on coming.
“My father is part of this,” she said. “I need to know how much.”
Arthur opened Vault 27.
Inside sat one envelope.
For Arthur.
His father's handwriting.
Arthur opened it.
Son,
If you are reading this, then Evelyn survived longer than I did.
Arthur stopped.
Kora touched his arm.
He continued.
Blood does not make you my son. Choice did.
Arthur's eyes burned.
Richard had known.
The letter explained that Arthur’s biological father belonged to another powerful family.
Richard refused to identify him in writing.
He feared Arthur would become a target.
But he had created the evidence vault to expose the alliance responsible for decades of killings.
The final line read:
Trust the woman who remembers your worst coffee.
Arthur laughed despite himself.
Kora covered her mouth.
Years ago she had told Richard Arthur made terrible coffee.
Richard had remembered.
Inside the envelope was a small metal disk.
Kora recognized it.
“The first key.”
“First?”
“There are three.”
“Where are the others?”
“One with Evelyn.”
“And the third?”
Kora looked at Beatrice.
“With Conrad.”
Beatrice stared at her.
“My father?”
Kora nodded.
The vault required representatives of three bloodlines.
Pendleton.
Whitmore.
Miller.
Wyatt understood first.
“My father.”
Arthur nodded.
The old alliance had built a prison for its own secrets.
They left the courthouse.
Beatrice received a call.
Conrad.
Arthur motioned for her to answer.
Her father’s voice filled the car.
“Come home.”
“No.”
“Beatrice.”
“You lied to me.”
Silence.
Then Conrad said, “Arthur isn't who you think.”
Beatrice looked at him.
“Neither are you.”
Conrad’s voice hardened.
“Kora Hastings will get everyone killed.”
Arthur took the phone.
“Then talk to me.”
A pause.
“Arthur.”
“Where's Elias?”
“Ask your mother.”
“Where's Silas?”
Another pause.
“Ask Kora.”
Arthur looked at her.
Kora's expression changed.
Conrad continued.
“You think that woman returned because she loves you?”
Arthur said nothing.
“She returned because Evelyn sent her.”
Kora shook her head.
“That's a lie.”
Conrad laughed.
“Is it?”
Arthur ended the call.
Kora stood.
“I need to show you something.”
She led them back to the hospital.
Behind a false wall in Room 314 was a second chamber.
Inside sat a recorder.
Kora pressed play.
Her own voice filled the room.
Clear.
Healthy.
Recorded before her throat was damaged.
“If Arthur ever hears this, I failed.”
Arthur stared at her.
The recording continued.
“Evelyn wants the families together at Saint Aurelia. She says once Arthur marries Beatrice, she can end everything in one night.”
Arthur looked at Kora.
“When did you record this?”
“Four years ago.”
The recording continued.
“I agreed to work with Evelyn because it was the only way to stay alive. But I won't let her kill Arthur.”
Arthur understood.
Kora had infiltrated Evelyn’s plan.
Not joined it.
Then another voice appeared on the recording.
Male.
Elias.
“You still love him.”
Recorded Kora answered.
“Yes.”
“Then he'll be your weakness.”
“No. He'll be yours.”
The recording ended.
Wyatt stared at the machine.
“My father knew.”
Kora nodded.
Arthur asked, “Why destroy your voice?”
“Punishment.”
“For?”
“Trying to send that recording.”
Arthur’s face went still.
Someone had cut into the throat of the woman he loved because she tried to warn him.
He wanted Elias.
But rage could wait.
Truth first.
Beatrice was searching another drawer.
She found a wedding invitation.
Their wedding invitation.
Printed six months before Arthur had even proposed the alliance publicly.
On the back, Evelyn had written:
ALL BLOODLINES PRESENT.
MIDNIGHT.
Arthur checked the cathedral floor plan.
Beneath the altar was an older chamber.
A chamber no modern blueprint showed.
Kora whispered, “The vault.”
Saint Aurelia itself contained the ledger.
The wedding had been designed to bring every key holder together.
Then Arthur’s phone rang.
Silas.
Arthur answered.
“Where are you?”
Silas sounded injured.
“Cathedral.”
“Stay there.”
“No time.”
“Silas.”
“I found Evelyn.”
Arthur went silent.
“Where?”
A strained breath.
“She's beneath the altar.”
Arthur started toward the door.
Then Silas whispered:
“But she's not alone.”
A gunshot exploded through the phone.
The line remained open.
Arthur heard footsteps.
Then his mother's voice came through clearly.
“Bring me my son.”
May you like
The call ended.
And for the first time, Arthur realized Evelyn might not mean him...
