Chapter 5 - The Woman Luca Trusted Most

“Don’t move.”
Adriano’s voice shook.
That made him more dangerous.
Luca raised his weapon.
“Put it down.”
Adriano laughed.
“Still giving orders.”
“We’re brothers.”
The words changed the room.
Adriano’s smile disappeared.
“So she told you.”
“Yes.”
“Finally.”
Isabella had not come to the hotel.
Luca was grateful.
Seeing Adriano like this would have broken something inside her that might never recover.
Salvatore looked at his son.
“Adriano.”
“Don’t call me that way.”
“I’m sorry.”
“For which part?”
Salvatore said nothing.
Adriano’s eyes shone.
“For sleeping with my mother?”
“Adriano—”
“For letting another man raise me?”
“Vittorio loved you.”
“You don’t get to use his name.”
“For lying?”
Adriano stepped closer.
“For making Luca your heir while I ate at the same table pretending to be his cousin?”
Luca lowered his weapon slightly.
“None of that was my choice.”
Adriano looked at him.
“No.”
For one second, the anger disappeared.
“You were the lucky one.”
Luca almost laughed.
“My father pretended to die and left me with his enemies.”
Adriano’s expression faltered.
“I buried him too.”
That mattered.
Luca saw it.
Rosa saw it too.
She stepped forward.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Adriano turned.
“I’m speaking to my brother.”
Rosa’s face hardened.
Just slightly.
But Luca saw the dynamic.
Adriano believed Rosa had helped him.
Rosa believed Adriano belonged to her.
“Elena,” Luca said.
She was already beside Marco, working at the ropes around his wrists.
“Get him free.”
Rosa smiled.
“You always did think you could control a room.”
Luca looked at her.
“You taught me.”
“I taught you many things.”
“You taught me to know when somebody is lying.”
Her smile thinned.
“Then you should have discovered me earlier.”
“That wasn’t a lie.”
“What?”
“You loved us.”
Rosa froze.
Adriano looked at her.
Luca continued.
“That’s why this took thirty years.”
Rosa’s eyes changed.
“You know nothing about love.”
“I know revenge doesn’t require bedtime stories.”
Elena stopped working for half a second.
Marco looked toward Rosa.
Luca pressed.
“You stayed when you didn’t have to.”
Rosa’s jaw tightened.
“I stayed because I wanted to watch this family rot.”
“You sat beside me when I had pneumonia.”
“To keep up appearances.”
“You cried at my mother’s funeral.”
Silence.
“You made Adriano birthday cakes until he was twenty.”
“Enough.”
“You told us never to fight each other.”
“Enough.”
“You loved us, and you hated yourself for it.”
Rosa’s face broke.
Only for a second.
But Adriano saw.
Luca knew he had reached something.
Then Salvatore ruined it.
“This is my fault.”
Rosa turned on him.
“Yes.”
Her calm vanished.
“Finally.”
She walked toward Salvatore.
“You destroyed my husband.”
“My father did.”
“And you inherited everything.”
“I was twenty-six.”
“And I was twenty-three with two children and a husband running for his life.”
Luca frowned.
“Two children?”
Rosa stopped.
Everyone heard it.
Luca repeated.
“You told us you never had children.”
She stared at him.
Marco whispered, “That’s the missing account.”
Elena looked at her brother.
“What?”
Marco’s hands were almost free.
“The money didn’t go to Rosa.”
“Then where?”
Marco looked at Luca.
“To her son.”
Rosa’s face went cold.
Luca understood.
“Who is he?”
No answer.
“Rosa.”
“Leave him out of this.”
“So he’s alive.”
“Yes.”
“Who?”
Adriano suddenly looked uneasy.
He lowered the gun a fraction.
“Rosa?”
She ignored him.
Marco freed one hand.
“The shell company signs payments to an executive initials C.M.”
Luca thought.
C.M.
Then he remembered.
Carlo Moretti.
His guard.
The man who had vanished from outside the bedroom.
The man who claimed Adriano took him.
Luca’s stomach dropped.
“Carlo.”
Rosa closed her eyes.
Adriano stared.
“Carlo is your son?”
A voice came from the doorway.
“Yes.”
Everyone turned.
Carlo stood there.
Weapon raised.
Pointed at Luca.
Matteo moved.
Carlo fired into the ceiling.
“Don’t.”
Dust fell.
Elena crouched beside Marco.
Luca stared at the man who had guarded him for eight years.
“You could have killed me a hundred times.”
Carlo smiled without humor.
“I didn’t want you dead.”
“What did you want?”
“What belongs to my family.”
“Money?”
“Name.”
Rosa whispered, “Carlo.”
He looked at her.
“You said you could handle this.”
“I can.”
“No, Mama.”
The word sounded strange in his mouth.
“You got sentimental.”
Rosa looked wounded.
Carlo walked farther in.
“You raised them like sons while I grew up with strangers.”
“I was protecting you.”
“You were loving them.”
Rosa shook her head.
“No.”
“Yes.”
His weapon moved toward Adriano.
“And him most.”
Adriano’s face changed.
“You told me I was your family.”
“You were useful.”
The words hit harder than any bullet.
Adriano lowered the gun.
Rosa shouted, “Carlo!”
But too late.
Adriano understood.
Every secret.
Every wound.
Every whispered reminder that Luca had stolen his place.
All of it had been cultivated.
Not by a protector.
By someone using his anger.
Luca saw his brother begin to collapse inside.
“Adriano.”
“Don’t.”
“You were used.”
“I said don’t.”
“That doesn’t make you innocent.”
Adriano looked at him.
Luca continued.
“But it doesn’t make you hers.”
Carlo laughed.
“Touching.”
Then he aimed at Elena.
Luca moved instantly.
“No.”
Carlo smiled.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The weakness.”
Elena stared at him.
Carlo continued.
“She walked into your room bleeding and suddenly Luca Valenti discovered a heart.”
Luca stepped between them.
“If you want leverage, use me.”
“I am.”
The gun remained aimed.
Marco struggled to stand.
Carlo’s eyes shifted.
That was all Matteo needed.
He lunged.
The gun fired.
Elena screamed.
Luca turned.
Matteo hit Carlo’s arm.
Adriano moved at the same time.
The weapon fell.
Marco kicked it away.
Rosa shouted Carlo’s name.
For several seconds, the room became chaos.
Then silence.
Carlo lay pinned beneath Matteo.
Adriano stood against the wall.
Salvatore remained untouched.
And Elena was staring down at her dress.
A fresh spot of blood appeared near her shoulder.
Luca went white.
“Elena.”
“I’m okay.”
He grabbed her gently.
“Where?”
“It’s not mine.”
Matteo looked down.
His forearm was bleeding.
“Just a graze.”
Luca breathed again.
Then Marco spoke.
“The box.”
Everyone looked at him.
“Room 317.”
He pointed toward the brass compartment.
“That’s what this is all about.”
Luca removed the key.
Salvatore handed him the signet ring after taking it from the floor where Rosa had dropped it.
Two keys.
One box.
He inserted the brass key.
Turned.
Nothing.
Then he pressed the signet ring into a circular indentation above it.
A click.
The compartment opened.
Inside lay a ledger.
A cassette tape.
Three sealed envelopes.
And a birth certificate.
Luca picked it up.
His eyes scanned the page.
Then stopped.
The name of the child was familiar.
Very familiar.
But the mother was not Rosa.
Luca slowly raised his eyes toward Salvatore.
“What is this?”
Salvatore’s face drained of color.
Rosa started laughing.
Elena moved closer.
Luca looked down again.
The certificate named a child born thirty-eight years ago.
LUCA ANTONIO CARUSO.
Not Valenti.
Caruso.
Luca stared at his father.
Salvatore whispered, “I can explain.”
Luca folded the document once.
Then a second time.
“No.”
He looked at Rosa.
For the first time in his life, the woman who had raised him seemed genuinely afraid.
“Who was my mother?”
Rosa opened her mouth.
May you like
Before she could answer, Salvatore said one name.
And Luca’s entire life changed.
