Chapter 4 - A Family Built on Lies

Luca stopped halfway down the staircase.
The man below him was older.
Thinner.
His hair had turned almost completely silver.
But there was no mistaking his face.
Salvatore Valenti.
His father.
Alive.
Elena stood behind Luca.
Isabella gripped the railing.
Matteo whispered a curse.
Salvatore looked up.
“Luca.”
Luca descended two more steps.
Then stopped again.
“You’re dead.”
Salvatore gave a sad smile.
“Apparently not.”
Eleven years of grief transformed instantly into rage.
Luca crossed the remaining distance in seconds.
He seized his father by the front of the coat and slammed him against the wall.
Matteo moved but stopped when Salvatore raised a hand.
“Let him.”
Luca’s voice shook.
“You let me bury you.”
“I know.”
“You let me stand beside an empty coffin.”
“Yes.”
“You watched me take over a war at twenty-four.”
Salvatore’s eyes filled with regret.
“I had no choice.”
Luca released him only so he could step back.
“Everyone has a choice.”
Salvatore looked toward Elena.
Then at the blood on her dress.
“What happened?”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“You don’t get to ask questions.”
“Elena Russo?”
She said nothing.
Salvatore’s face changed.
“Where’s Marco?”
“That’s exactly what I’d like to know.”
Salvatore closed his eyes.
“Adriano.”
Luca stared.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“You seem to have spent eleven years suspecting things from a comfortable grave.”
Salvatore accepted the insult.
Isabella came down the stairs.
“You promised me you would never return.”
“I had to.”
“Why now?”
“Because the account moved.”
“What account?”
Salvatore looked at Luca.
“The one behind Room 317.”
Luca’s patience snapped.
“No more riddles.”
Salvatore nodded.
“You’re right.”
They moved into the library.
The broken furniture and bloodstained carpet remained exactly as Luca had found them.
Salvatore stopped at the sight.
“Giorgio.”
“He was here.”
“Alive?”
“We don’t know.”
Salvatore’s shoulders lowered.
Elena watched him.
“You know why Marco found the records.”
Salvatore looked at her.
“Yes.”
“How?”
“Because I gave him the first file.”
Luca turned sharply.
“You contacted Marco?”
“Three months ago.”
“Why him?”
“Because I couldn’t contact you.”
“You had eleven years.”
“I was keeping you alive.”
“Stop saying that like it excuses everything.”
Salvatore looked older under the library lights.
“It doesn’t.”
That answer surprised Luca.
His father continued.
“After Vittorio discovered the financial network, he threatened to expose it. He was killed.”
“By whom?”
“A group inside our own organization.”
“Names.”
“Some are dead.”
“Some?”
Salvatore looked toward Isabella.
“Adriano became involved two years ago.”
Isabella shook her head.
“No.”
“He did.”
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I were.”
Tears appeared in her eyes.
“My son would never—”
“Your son spent his entire life believing I stole his name.”
Salvatore’s voice broke.
“I created that anger.”
Isabella looked away.
Elena asked, “What was the network?”
“Money stolen from businesses controlled by both families. The theft was hidden through companies registered under dead men.”
“Why would Marco care now?”
“Because one of those companies became active again.”
Luca leaned against the table.
“Valenti Financial Holdings.”
Salvatore nodded.
“Exactly.”
“Who controls it?”
Salvatore hesitated.
Luca slammed his palm against the table.
“Who?”
“Rosa.”
Silence.
Everyone turned.
Rosa was gone.
Luca looked toward the doorway.
Empty.
Matteo immediately reached for his phone.
“Lock down the grounds.”
Salvatore shook his head.
“She knows every exit.”
Isabella stared.
“Rosa raised Luca.”
“Yes.”
“She raised Adriano.”
“Yes.”
“You’re saying she built this?”
“No.”
Salvatore’s face hardened.
“Her husband did.”
Luca frowned.
“Rosa’s husband died before I was born.”
“That’s what she told everyone.”
Salvatore walked toward the old desk.
“His real name was Emil Caruso.”
Matteo swore under his breath.
Luca knew the name.
Everyone in their world did.
Caruso had controlled half the city before the Valentis rose.
He vanished during a federal investigation thirty-five years earlier.
“Rosa was Caruso’s wife?”
“Yes.”
“And she entered our house as a maid?”
“She entered it as revenge.”
Elena sank into a chair.
Salvatore continued.
“Her husband lost everything because of my father. Rosa spent decades inside this family waiting.”
“For what?”
“For us to destroy ourselves.”
Luca thought of every childhood meal.
Every birthday.
Every fever when Rosa sat beside his bed.
Every argument she overheard.
Every secret spoken within earshot.
She had known everything.
“She manipulated Adriano.”
Salvatore nodded.
“She told him the truth about his parentage before Isabella was ready.”
Isabella covered her mouth.
“She showed him letters.”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Adriano was nineteen.”
Luca understood the damage immediately.
A nineteen-year-old boy learning his uncle was his father.
Learning the cousin beside him was actually his brother.
And hearing it from a woman who wanted the revelation to become poison.
Elena whispered, “Marco found Rosa.”
Salvatore nodded.
“He traced the accounts to her.”
“Then why didn’t he tell Luca immediately?”
“He didn’t know whether I was telling the truth.”
Luca looked at his father.
“Smart.”
Salvatore accepted that too.
“He investigated independently.”
“And tonight?”
“He was supposed to meet Giorgio Bellini and show him what he found.”
Elena closed her eyes.
“That’s why Giorgio was here.”
“Yes.”
“And Adriano found out.”
“Probably.”
Luca looked at the clock.
Midnight had passed.
His phone had not rung.
That frightened him more than the deadline.
Elena saw his expression.
“Marco.”
Luca dialed the unknown number.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Matteo approached.
“We can be at the Bellini in twelve minutes.”
Luca nodded.
“Move.”
Salvatore stepped forward.
“I’m coming.”
“No.”
“Luca.”
“You lost the right to stand beside me eleven years ago.”
“Elena’s brother is there because I brought him into this.”
“And you think that earns you a place?”
“No.”
Salvatore looked at him.
“I think it gives me a debt.”
Luca hated that the answer sounded sincere.
He turned away.
“Stay behind Matteo.”
They left through the service garage.
Elena rode beside Luca.
Neither spoke for several minutes.
Finally she said, “Are you okay?”
“No.”
It was the simplest answer he had given all night.
She looked at his hands.
One was clenched.
Without thinking, she placed hers over it.
Luca looked down.
Then at her.
“You’re shaking.”
“So are you.”
He hadn’t realized it.
He opened his hand.
Elena kept hers there.
The car turned onto Bellini Street.
The hotel appeared ahead.
Dark windows.
Abandoned entrance.
A building Luca remembered from childhood.
His father had once brought him there every Sunday.
Room 317.
Matteo stopped the vehicle behind an old loading dock.
“No lights.”
Luca nodded.
They entered through a side door.
The lobby smelled of dust.
Their footsteps echoed.
Salvatore whispered, “Third floor.”
They took the stairs.
At the landing, Luca saw fresh footprints.
He raised a hand.
Everyone stopped.
A faint sound came from above.
Metal scraping.
Then a voice.
Marco.
“Elena?”
She moved before Luca could stop her.
He caught her wrist.
“Wait.”
“Marco!”
“Elena, don’t!”
A door slammed upstairs.
Luca ran.
They reached the third floor.
Room 317 stood at the end.
Open.
A single lamp burned inside.
Marco sat tied to a chair.
Alive.
“Elena!”
She rushed toward him.
Luca scanned the room.
Too easy.
He saw the brass box mounted in the wall.
The key slot.
Marco shouted.
“Don’t open it!”
Everyone froze.
Luca looked at him.
“Why?”
Marco’s eyes moved toward the closet.
A shadow shifted underneath the door.
Luca raised his weapon.
“Come out.”
Nothing.
Salvatore stepped forward.
Then Rosa walked from the closet.
She held no weapon.
Only Salvatore’s missing signet ring.
Her expression was calm.
Almost gentle.
“Hello, Luca.”
Isabella had been wrong.
Adriano had been wrong.
Everyone had been looking for a traitor.
The traitor had been raising them since childhood.
Rosa smiled.
Then another figure stepped from the darkness behind Marco.
May you like
Adriano.
And he was pointing a gun directly at Salvatore.
