Chapter 5 - The Bullet Meant for Luca

Elena did not feel the pain immediately.
She felt the impact.
A brutal force struck beneath her shoulder and spun her against Luca. The sky tilted. Rusted containers, gray clouds, and Luca’s face blurred together.
Then sound returned.
Gunfire.
Shouting.
Luca saying her name.
He lowered her behind a concrete barrier and pressed his hand against the wound.
“Elena. Look at me.”
She tried.
His face moved in and out of focus.
“Did we get Bianca?” she whispered.
“Do not speak.”
“Sofia?”
“Safe.”
“Good.”
Her eyelids fluttered.
Luca gripped her jaw.
“No. Stay with me.”
The man who never begged was begging now.
Elena tried to smile.
“You sound afraid.”
“I am.”
The admission reached her through the pain.
She had wanted honesty from him.
Now she wished he would lie.
Rocco appeared beside them.
“The shooter is down. We need to move.”
Luca lifted Elena into his arms.
On the platform, Mercer still held Bianca at gunpoint. Matteo stood twenty feet away, his weapon trained on Mercer.
“Let her go,” Matteo said.
Mercer laughed.
“You betrayed Luca for money, and now you want to play the loyal brother?”
Matteo’s hands shook.
“I made a choice.”
“You made several.”
“So did you.”
He fired.
The bullet struck Mercer’s shoulder.
Bianca twisted free.
Rocco’s men rushed the platform, but Mercer disappeared through a service hatch before they reached him.
Vincent tried to follow.
Sofia caught his ankle.
He fell hard against the metal stairs.
Rocco reached him first.
Vincent raised both hands.
“I can explain.”
Rocco hit him once, and the attorney stopped moving.
Luca did not see any of it.
He carried Elena to the sedan while blood spread across his shirt.
The nearest hospital was twelve minutes away.
They reached it in seven.
Doctors took Elena from his arms in the emergency entrance.
A nurse tried to stop Luca from following.
He looked at her once.
She moved aside.
Inside the trauma room, medical staff cut Elena’s dress and examined the wound.
“The bullet entered below the clavicle,” a surgeon said. “We need imaging. Possible vascular damage.”
Luca stood near the wall, covered in blood.
“Save her.”
“We are doing everything—”
“Save her.”
The doctor met his eyes.
“We need room to work.”
Rocco arrived and placed a hand on Luca’s shoulder.
“Come outside.”
Luca did not move.
Elena’s eyes opened briefly.
She saw him.
“Go,” she whispered.
Only then did he allow Rocco to lead him into the hall.
Caroline arrived thirty minutes later.
She had Elena’s eyes and none of her restraint.
The moment she saw Luca, she slapped him.
Rocco stepped forward, but Luca raised a hand.
Caroline struck him again.
“My sister worked for you because she believed you were changing.”
Luca said nothing.
“She defended you. Every time I told her men like you destroy everything they touch, she said I didn’t understand.”
Tears ran down Caroline’s face.
“Was this what I didn’t understand?”
“No,” Luca said. “You understood perfectly.”
The answer stopped her.
He looked down at the blood on his hands.
“This is my fault.”
Rocco frowned.
“Elena chose to move.”
“Because a gunman was aiming at me.”
“You did not order her to do it.”
“I brought her there.”
“She insisted.”
“I should have refused.”
Caroline laughed bitterly.
“You think Elena has ever stopped doing something because a man refused permission?”
Despite herself, she knew the answer.
Caroline lowered her hand.
“What happened?”
Luca told her.
Not everything.
He did not mention the hidden accounts, criminal alliances, or the full extent of Matteo’s betrayal. But he told her about Shaw, Mercer, the freight yard, and the bullet.
When he finished, Caroline sat against the wall.
“She killed a man?”
“She survived one.”
Caroline covered her mouth.
“Does Daniel know?”
“No.”
“Good.”
Bianca arrived under guard.
There was blood on her temple, but she had refused treatment until she saw Luca.
Caroline stood.
“You are his mother?”
Bianca looked at her.
“Yes.”
“My sister was shot saving your son.”
Bianca glanced toward the operating-room doors.
“I know.”
“Do you?”
Caroline’s anger filled the corridor.
“Because from what Elena told me, you spent two years treating her like dirt beneath your shoes.”
Bianca stiffened.
“This is not the place.”
“It became the place when my sister’s blood ended up on your family.”
Luca expected his mother to respond with cruelty.
Instead, Bianca sat.
She suddenly looked older.
“I was wrong about her,” she said.
Caroline stared.
Bianca folded her hands.
“I believed Elena made Luca vulnerable. I thought vulnerability would lead him to the same grave as his father.”
“She did make him vulnerable,” Caroline said. “That is what happens when people matter.”
Bianca looked toward Luca.
He remained standing near the operating-room doors.
For years, she had taught him that love was a weakness enemies could exploit.
Mercer had proven her right.
Yet Elena’s love—or whatever name she gave the force that sent her running toward a bullet—had also saved him.
Perhaps weakness and strength had never been opposites.
Perhaps they were the same opening, viewed from different sides.
The surgeon emerged after two hours.
Luca crossed the corridor.
“The bullet missed the subclavian artery by less than a centimeter,” the doctor said. “It fractured part of the shoulder blade and caused significant blood loss, but there is no major vascular damage.”
“Will she live?”
“Yes.”
The word nearly brought Luca to his knees.
“She will need surgery to repair the fracture, but she is stable.”
Caroline began to cry.
Rocco exhaled.
Bianca closed her eyes.
Luca stood motionless.
“Can I see her?”
“Briefly.”
Elena looked small in the hospital bed.
Machines surrounded her. A bandage covered her shoulder. Her skin was pale, but her breathing was steady.
Luca sat beside her.
For several minutes, he simply watched.
Then her eyes opened.
“You look terrible,” she murmured.
He almost laughed.
“You were shot.”
“And somehow your hair suffered more.”
His voice broke.
“Elena.”
She looked at him.
He took her hand with extreme care.
“I am sorry.”
“For what?”
“Everything.”
“That may require a longer visiting hour.”
“I brought you into this.”
“I walked.”
“I failed to protect you.”
“You cannot protect someone from every choice she makes.”
“I should have.”
“No.”
Her fingers tightened weakly around his.
“You do not get to turn my decision into another reason to hate yourself.”
“You could have died.”
“So could you.”
“That would have been different.”
“Why?”
“Because the bullet was meant for me.”
“And I decided it would not have you.”
Luca lowered his head.
Elena watched the most feared man in Manhattan struggle to remain whole.
“I love you,” she said.
The words were barely audible.
He looked up.
She had not planned to say them. Pain medication had weakened the walls she normally kept around her heart.
But once spoken, the truth felt inevitable.
“I have loved you for longer than is sensible,” she continued. “Possibly longer than is dignified.”
Luca stared at her.
“You should rest.”
“That is a terrible response.”
“I love you too.”
Her eyes filled.
He brought her hand to his mouth.
“I love you enough to know I should stay away from you.”
“That is also a terrible response.”
“My world put you here.”
“Your world also includes hundreds of employees with health insurance because you listened to me. It includes neighborhoods your company rebuilt instead of exploited. It includes Caroline and Daniel alive because you protected them.”
“It includes Shaw.”
“Yes.”
“It includes Mercer.”
“For now.”
Luca studied her face.
“You still believe I can change.”
“I believe change is not a single decision. It is a thousand decisions made after the easy lie stops working.”
A nurse entered and announced that Elena needed rest.
Luca stood.
She held his hand.
“Do not disappear.”
“I won’t.”
He meant it.
Outside the room, Rocco waited with news.
“Mercer escaped through the river tunnels. We recovered one vehicle, but he was not inside.”
“Vincent?”
“In custody.”
“Matteo?”
Rocco hesitated.
“Missing.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“What happened?”
“He pursued Mercer into the tunnel. We lost contact.”
Bianca rose from her chair.
“My son is out there?”
Rocco nodded.
Then Sofia approached.
She had received stitches above her eyebrow.
“Matteo gave me this before he went after Mercer.”
She handed Luca a folded piece of paper.
It contained an address in Red Hook and a handwritten message.
I know where he is going. This time, let me fix what I broke.
Luca folded the paper.
Bianca gripped his arm.
“You have to bring him back.”
“He may already be dead.”
“He is your brother.”
Luca looked toward Elena’s room.
Hours ago, those words had sounded like an excuse.
Now they sounded like a responsibility.
“I will bring him back if he is alive,” Luca said. “But this ends tonight.”
Caroline stepped into the corridor.
“What does that mean?”
Luca met her eyes.
“It means Mercer will never come near your family again.”
“Are you going to kill him?”
No one spoke.
The question demanded more than strategy.
It demanded a decision about the man Luca intended to become.
He looked down at his bloodstained shirt.
Elena’s blood.
“I am going to stop him,” he said.
Caroline’s expression remained uncertain.
“And if stopping him requires killing him?”
Luca looked toward the hospital doors.
“Then I will make sure it is the last death he causes.”
At the Red Hook address, Matteo regained consciousness tied to a chair.
Adrian Mercer stood across from him, his wounded shoulder wrapped in white cloth.
“You should have stayed a coward,” Mercer said.
Matteo tasted blood.
“I tried.”
Mercer smiled.
“You gave me everything I needed.”
“Not everything.”
“No?”
Matteo lifted his head.
“My brother is still alive.”
Mercer’s expression darkened.
“And Elena?”
“Alive too.”
For the first time, uncertainty entered Mercer’s eyes.
Matteo smiled through split lips.
“You built your plan around everyone behaving as badly as you.”
He leaned against the ropes.
“That was your mistake.”
Outside the warehouse, black vehicles arrived without headlights.
Luca stepped onto the wet pavement.
Rocco checked his weapon.
Bianca had wanted to come, but Luca ordered her to remain at the hospital with Elena.
This was not a rescue she could control.
Luca looked at the dark warehouse.
Inside was his brother.
Inside was the man who had shaped half his life through blood and lies.
Rocco waited for the command.
May you like
Luca raised his hand.
The doors exploded inward.
