Chapter 4 - The Secret Buried With His Father

Luca had been nineteen when his father died.

Antonio Valenti was shot outside Saint Michael’s Church on a winter morning so cold that blood froze on the steps.

Luca remembered kneeling beside him.

He remembered pressing both hands against the wound while Antonio tried to speak. The words never came. Only blood bubbled at his lips as church bells rang over the city.

For seventeen years, Luca had believed Adrian Mercer’s father ordered the assassination.

That belief shaped everything.

The alliances Luca made.

The men he killed.

The empire he built.

Now Mercer sat behind a screen and claimed Bianca had arranged her husband’s death.

Luca stared at the image.

His mother’s face remained proud despite the ropes around her wrists.

“Kill the connection,” she said.

Mercer tightened a hand on her shoulder.

“You always were impatient, Bianca.”

“Take your hand off her,” Luca said.

Mercer smiled.

“There he is.”

“What do you want?”

“A conversation.”

“You abducted two women to arrange one?”

“Sofia came willingly.”

Rocco stepped toward the screen.

“Sofia.”

His sister looked up.

“I’m sorry,” she said.

“Where are you?”

Mercer laughed.

“She is not going to answer that.”

Rocco’s voice shook with controlled fury.

“Did he hurt you?”

“No.”

The blood on her forehead suggested otherwise.

Mercer noticed Rocco looking.

“A small misunderstanding. She tried to leave after discovering Bianca’s secret.”

Luca did not take his eyes from his mother.

“Tell me he is lying.”

Bianca held his gaze.

“He is manipulating you.”

“That is not an answer.”

“Luca, do not do this in front of him.”

“Did you arrange my father’s murder?”

Silence.

Elena stood beside Luca, close enough to feel the tension moving through him.

Bianca closed her eyes.

“No.”

Mercer lifted a small recorder.

“Then perhaps Antonio can answer.”

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a man’s voice spoke.

Luca knew it instantly.

His father.

Bianca says the arrangement is necessary. She believes Mercer will honor the border if I step away. I do not trust him. But she has already contacted his people.

The recording ended.

Luca’s face became bloodless.

Mercer turned the device in his fingers.

“Recorded two days before Antonio’s death.”

Bianca spoke quickly.

“I wanted him to leave the organization. I arranged a meeting, not an assassination.”

“You contacted my father,” Mercer said. “You offered control of the Brooklyn docks if Antonio retired.”

“I was trying to save my sons.”

“You gave us his route to the church.”

“I gave you the route so your men could speak to him.”

“And you truly believed they would only speak?”

Bianca looked away.

Luca felt the room tilt.

His childhood had been built around a single story: Antonio died because the Mercers feared him. Bianca had repeated it at every anniversary mass. She had stood beside Luca as he swore vengeance.

“You knew they would attack him,” Luca said.

“No.”

“You knew it was possible.”

“I thought they would frighten him into leaving.”

“And when they killed him?”

Bianca’s voice broke.

“I did what I had to do to keep you alive.”

“You blamed the Mercers.”

“They pulled the trigger.”

“You gave them the location.”

“To prevent a war.”

Luca laughed once.

The sound held no humor.

“You created one.”

Mercer raised his glass.

“At last, we agree.”

Elena looked at the screen carefully.

Something about Mercer’s performance felt too polished. He had waited years to reveal this secret, yet he did so during a chaotic night involving Shaw, planted evidence, and financial sabotage.

He wanted Luca emotionally shattered.

That meant the secret was either incomplete or useful only when misunderstood.

“Elena,” Mercer said.

She stiffened.

“I was wondering when you would step closer.”

“What do you want from me?”

“The same thing Shaw requested. Access.”

“To Luca’s accounts?”

“To the evidence you found tonight.”

“You mean the fraudulent transfers.”

Mercer’s smile faded slightly.

So she was right.

“You have until dawn to deliver the original ledgers and passwords,” he said. “In exchange, Bianca and Sofia return alive.”

“No,” Luca said.

Mercer looked pleased.

“I expected you to be difficult.”

“You will release them now.”

“Or?”

“I will remove every person who ever spoke your name with loyalty.”

Mercer leaned back.

“You still believe fear is power. Your father believed the same. Look how that ended.”

The screen went black.

Rocco slammed a fist against the wall.

Luca remained motionless.

Elena reached for his arm.

He pulled away.

The movement was not violent, but it hurt her.

“I need the room,” he said.

“Luca—”

“Go with Rocco.”

“I’m not leaving you alone.”

His eyes met hers.

For the first time since she had known him, they looked empty.

“That was not a request.”

Rocco placed a hand near Elena’s shoulder.

She stepped away before he could touch her.

“Your mother may have made a terrible choice,” she told Luca. “But Mercer selected the recording. He selected the moment. Do not let him decide what the truth means.”

Luca turned his back.

Elena left with Rocco.

The steel door closed.

For ten minutes, Luca stood in silence.

Then he swept the coffee cups, computer, and secure phone from the desk.

They struck the floor.

He gripped the edge of the table and lowered his head.

His father’s death had been the fixed point of his life. Everything before it belonged to childhood. Everything after it belonged to vengeance.

If Bianca had helped set the attack in motion, then every grave Luca had filled in Antonio’s name became a question.

A coded knock sounded.

Luca ignored it.

The door opened.

Matteo entered under guard.

His lower lip was split. One eye had begun to swell.

“Leave us,” Luca told the guards.

When they were alone, Matteo remained near the door.

“I heard about Mom.”

“Did you know?”

“No.”

“Think carefully.”

“I didn’t know she contacted the Mercers before Father died.”

“That was not my question.”

Matteo looked down.

Luca crossed the room.

“What did you know?”

“Years ago, I found letters.”

“What letters?”

“Between Mom and Adrian Mercer’s father.”

Luca’s voice dropped.

“When?”

“I was sixteen.”

“You hid them for twenty years?”

“I confronted her. She said they were negotiations to end the conflict. She made me swear not to tell you.”

“And you obeyed.”

“I was afraid of what you would do.”

“You were protecting her.”

“I was protecting you.”

Luca struck the wall beside Matteo’s head.

“Everyone claims betrayal was protection.”

Matteo flinched.

“I was a child.”

“You are not a child now. Yet you sold Elena’s family to Mercer.”

“I know.”

“No. You know you were caught. That is different.”

Matteo’s eyes filled.

“I thought I could fix it.”

“That belief has destroyed more lives than hatred.”

Matteo wiped blood from his mouth.

“Let me help bring them back.”

“Why would I trust you?”

“You shouldn’t.”

The answer surprised Luca.

Matteo continued.

“But Mercer’s debt collectors used a club in Queens. I met one of his lieutenants there. If Mercer has Mom nearby, they may know where.”

“You expect me to send you alone?”

“No. I expect you to use me as bait.”

Luca studied him.

Matteo had spent much of his life avoiding consequences. Now, for the first time, he was offering himself as one.

“That does not erase what you did,” Luca said.

“I know.”

“Elena may never forgive you.”

“I know.”

“I may not.”

Matteo nodded.

“I know.”

Luca opened the steel door.

Rocco and Elena waited outside.

Elena had changed into a simple black dress borrowed from one of the staff. Her hair was pulled back. Without the blood, she looked composed again.

But Luca could now see the effort beneath it.

“Matteo has a lead,” he said.

Rocco listened as Matteo explained the Queens club.

“I know the location,” Rocco said. “Mercer uses the basement for private games.”

Elena shook her head.

“It is too obvious.”

“Obvious does not mean false,” Matteo replied.

“It does when Mercer wants us moving before dawn.”

Luca looked at her.

“What do you suggest?”

“Give him what he asked for.”

“No.”

“Not the real records.”

“You want to create false evidence?”

“I want to create a trail he cannot resist.”

Elena returned to the secure computer.

“The fraudulent transfers Mercer planted connect his companies to yours. I can alter the ledgers so they appear to show a hidden emergency account.”

“How much?” Matteo asked.

“Enough to finance a war.”

Rocco understood.

“Mercer will send someone to verify the account.”

“And whoever verifies it will lead us closer to him,” Elena said.

Luca watched her fingers move over the keyboard.

Hours earlier, she had been crying in a bloodstained dress. Now she was building a trap for the man who ordered her abduction.

“You should be with your sister,” he said.

“Caroline is protected.”

“You have done enough.”

“Not until Bianca and Sofia are safe.”

“My mother struck you.”

“That does not mean she deserves to die.”

Luca moved closer.

“You are allowed to hate people who hurt you.”

“I know.”

“But you don’t.”

“I hate what she did. I don’t need her dead to prove it.”

Luca looked at her for a long moment.

Then he said, “Build the account.”

Within forty minutes, Elena created an encrypted financial package showing eighty million dollars in reserve funds. The account did not exist, but its documentation was convincing enough to fool anyone without access to the original banking network.

They sent Mercer a single message from Shaw’s phone.

Elena agrees. Proof attached. Exchange at dawn.

Mercer replied three minutes later.

Queens. Saint Agnes freight yard. Come with Elena only.

Rocco shook his head.

“It is a kill box.”

“Yes,” Luca said.

Elena looked at him.

“And we are going.”

“No.”

“She is the reason he believes the records are real,” Matteo said.

Luca turned on him.

“You have lost the right to make suggestions involving her safety.”

Elena stepped between them.

“I will go.”

“You almost died tonight.”

“And because I survived, I know exactly what Mercer thinks of me.”

“He thinks you are leverage.”

“He thinks I am frightened, soft, and desperate to protect others.”

“You are frightened.”

“Yes.”

The honesty silenced him.

Elena continued.

“Courage is not the absence of fear, Luca. It is deciding fear does not get the final vote.”

He stared at her.

She touched his hand.

“Let me help end this.”

At dawn, the freight yard lay beneath a gray sky.

Rows of rusted containers stretched toward the river. Wind moved through broken fencing, carrying the smell of rain and diesel.

Luca arrived in a black sedan with Elena beside him.

Mercer’s instructions had forbidden additional men.

Luca brought twenty.

They remained hidden across rooftops, drainage corridors, and abandoned warehouses.

Elena held the encrypted drive in one hand.

Luca noticed her other hand trembling.

He covered it with his.

“You stay behind me.”

“That may make it difficult to hand him the drive.”

“Then throw it.”

Despite everything, she smiled faintly.

They walked between the containers.

A floodlight turned on.

Bianca and Sofia stood on a raised loading platform fifty feet away. Their hands were bound.

Mercer appeared behind them.

He was not alone.

Vincent Hale stood at his side.

Luca stopped.

Vincent had escaped the penthouse.

That meant another person inside Luca’s security network had helped him.

Mercer spread his arms.

“Welcome to the end of your family.”

Elena looked toward Sofia.

The younger woman shook her head urgently.

“It’s a trap!”

Gunfire erupted from the rooftops.

But the shots were not aimed at Luca.

They struck Mercer’s men.

Rocco’s teams had opened fire first.

Mercer dragged Bianca backward.

Vincent seized Sofia.

Luca pushed Elena behind a container and drew his weapon.

“Stay down.”

He moved toward the platform as bullets sparked against metal.

Matteo emerged from the opposite corridor, ignoring Luca’s order to remain behind. He fired at Vincent, forcing the attorney to release Sofia.

Rocco reached his sister and pulled her to safety.

Mercer pressed a gun against Bianca’s head.

“Stop!” he shouted.

The shooting ceased.

Luca stood in the open.

Mercer smiled.

“Drop your weapon.”

Luca lowered it slowly.

Elena watched from behind the container.

Then she saw the second gunman above Luca.

He lay hidden on a crane platform, aiming directly at Luca’s back.

She did not think.

She ran.

“Luca!”

The gunman fired.

Elena struck Luca from the side.

The bullet hit her.

She fell into his arms.

For one impossible second, the entire freight yard became silent.

Luca looked down at the dark stain spreading across her black dress.

May you like

Once again, he saw only blood.

But this time, it was hers.
