Chapter 7 - The Photograph in Claire’s Box

Daniel froze.

The knock came again.

Police surrounded the bay.

Alvarez raised her weapon.

“Who’s there?”

A voice answered.

“Robert.”

Rachel stared.

Robert Bennett had supposedly gone home under police supervision.

Alvarez opened the side entrance.

Robert stumbled inside, bleeding from his forehead.

“Someone followed me.”

He had received a message ordering him to Harper Auto at midnight.

The same person had known about Claire’s hidden compartment.

Daniel opened Claire’s box.

Inside were medical papers, photographs, and a flash drive.

There was also a photograph Daniel had never seen.

Claire and Michael stood beside a damaged Glenford truck.

Between them was Elaine.

All three were looking directly at the camera.

On the back Claire had written:

If we fail, protect the children.

Daniel’s blood chilled.

“What children?”

Rachel whispered.

“Noah? Emma?”

Robert sat heavily.

“All of them.”

He finally told the complete story.

Claire had discovered that Glenford’s falsified maintenance records were causing injuries. Michael had gathered evidence. Elaine, hired as an outside auditor, initially helped them.

Then Voss discovered what they were doing.

Elaine panicked.

She convinced Claire to hide copies.

Michael hid the ledger at Morning Glory.

Claire hid digital evidence somewhere Daniel would eventually find it.

“Why four years?” Daniel asked.

Robert pointed at the timer.

“Michael built delayed-release locks for warehouse evidence cabinets. Maybe Claire used one.”

Daniel inserted the flash drive.

Video appeared.

Claire filled the screen.

Healthy enough to sit upright.

Sick enough that Daniel remembered the sweater.

“Daniel,” she began.

He stopped the video.

He could not breathe.

Rachel touched his arm.

“You don’t have to.”

“Yes.”

He pressed play.

Claire explained everything.

Michael had found proof of criminal safety violations.

Elaine had helped.

Then Elaine discovered something worse: Voss was laundering settlement money through shell companies.

Claire feared Michael would be killed.

“If you’re seeing this,” Claire said, “then I probably didn’t get enough time.”

Daniel covered his mouth.

Claire continued.

“Do not blame Elaine. She made mistakes because she was afraid, but she saved copies. Trust the evidence, not appearances.”

The video ended abruptly.

Alvarez took the drive.

Daniel sat in silence.

Rachel remained beside him.

Eventually he whispered, “She knew she was dying and still tried to protect strangers.”

Rachel answered, “That sounds like the woman Michael described.”

Daniel looked at her.

“Michael talked about Claire?”

“In his journal. He called her the bravest person in the room.”

For the first time, Daniel smiled while crying.

Rachel squeezed his hand.

Then Alvarez returned from the office.

“The drive contains financial records. Enough to reopen several investigations.”

“What about Elaine?”

“We still need to find her.”

A technician called from the computer.

There was another file.

A photograph.

Recent.

Not four years old.

Taken three days earlier.

It showed Elaine standing beside someone outside Rachel’s apartment.

The second person’s face was partially hidden.

Robert leaned toward the screen.

His chair scraped backward.

“No.”

Rachel looked at him.

“Who is it?”

Robert’s face went white.

“That man is dead.”

Daniel enlarged the image.

Robert whispered the name.

May you like

“Charles Voss.”

And at that exact moment, the lights in the repair shop went out...
