Chapter 3 - A Birthday That Wasn’t Supposed to Happen

Daniel answered.

No one spoke.

“Hello?”

Static.

Then breathing.

A man’s voice said, “Stop asking about Michael Bennett.”

The call ended.

Rachel stared at him.

“You were asking about Michael?”

“No.”

“Then why would someone say that?”

Daniel had no answer.

He checked the number.

Blocked.

Emma stood near Lucy.

“Dad?”

“It’s fine.”

Rachel gave him a look that said clearly it was not.

Daniel sent the girls into the break room with his employee Luis.

Then Rachel told him about the photograph.

Michael had kept an old metal box in the attic.

After his death, Rachel could not bring herself to open it.

Six months ago a roof leak forced her to move everything.

Inside she found photographs, receipts, and one picture of Michael standing beside Claire at a charity event.

On the back:

If anything happens to me, Claire knows why.

“But Claire died first,” Daniel said.

“I know.”

“When did Michael die?”

“Three years ago. Warehouse accident.”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“What happened?”

“A loading platform failed.”

“Glenford?”

“Yes.”

Daniel remembered reading about it.

One worker killed.

Investigation.

Settlement.

Then silence.

Rachel gripped her purse.

“Why did Claire know something about my husband?”

“I don’t know.”

“You said Michael came to see her before she died.”

“Yes.”

“What did they discuss?”

“She made me leave.”

Rachel turned away.

The connection between them no longer felt accidental.

Daniel had bought a cake because a struggling mother reminded him of grief.

Now their dead spouses seemed to be reaching through the past.

That evening Noah’s birthday happened in Rachel’s small apartment.

Daniel had no intention of attending.

Then Noah appeared at the repair shop holding a hand-drawn invitation.

“My mom says you don’t have to come.”

Daniel looked at Rachel, standing twenty feet behind him with obvious embarrassment.

“That is exactly what I said,” she called.

Noah continued.

“But I say you do.”

Daniel smiled.

So Daniel, Emma, and Lucy came.

There were no balloons except three Noah had found in a kitchen drawer.

There were six guests.

There was macaroni and cheese.

There was cake.

And when everyone sang, Rachel watched Noah close his eyes before blowing out the candles.

Daniel watched Rachel.

For the first time, she looked peaceful.

Only for seconds.

But enough.

After cake, Noah opened a present Daniel had brought.

A model tow truck.

“You didn’t have to,” Rachel murmured.

“I know.”

“You say that a lot.”

“You tell me I don’t have to do things a lot.”

Emma and Noah began assembling the truck.

Lucy fell asleep against Daniel.

Rachel sat beside him.

“What did Claire do?”

“School counselor.”

Rachel looked surprised.

“At Maple Glen?”

Daniel nodded.

“I work there.”

“I know.”

“How?”

“Marlene told me.”

“That woman cannot keep anything private except your identity.”

Daniel smiled.

Rachel did too.

Then Noah approached.

“Mom, can I get Dad’s box?”

Rachel froze.

Daniel looked at Noah.

“What box?”

Noah pointed toward the hall closet.

“The one Mom says not to touch.”

Rachel stood.

“Noah.”

“But it has the lady from his picture.”

Daniel’s smile disappeared.

Rachel stared at her son.

“What did you say?”

“I saw it when you got the birthday candles.”

Rachel went to the closet.

The metal box sat behind winter coats.

She brought it to the table.

Daniel hesitated.

“This belongs to Michael.”

“He’s gone.”

“So is Claire.”

Rachel unlocked it.

They searched carefully.

Receipts.

Photographs.

Employee records.

A small key.

Then Daniel found an envelope.

CLAIRE HARPER.

His hands shook.

Rachel whispered, “Open it.”

Inside was a note from Michael.

Claire,

I found proof Glenford has been falsifying safety inspections. Robert knows. He told me to keep quiet because people above him are involved. If I disappear, give Daniel the ledger. He’ll know what to do.

Daniel looked up.

“Who’s Robert?”

Rachel whispered, “Michael’s brother.”

“Where is he?”

“I haven’t seen him since the funeral.”

A knock came at the apartment door.

Rachel glanced at the clock.

9:47 p.m.

Nobody visited at that hour.

Another knock.

Three slow taps.

Daniel stood.

Rachel reached for her phone.

“Who is it?”

No answer.

Daniel moved toward the door.

Then Noah spoke from behind them.

“Mom?”

Rachel turned.

Noah was holding the small key from Michael’s box.

A paper tag hung from it.

Daniel took it.

Three words were written there.

MORNING GLORY BAKERY.

The knock came again.

And this time, a man outside whispered Rachel’s name...
