Chapter 4 - The Secret Beneath The Mansion

The door opened.

Slowly.

I stood frozen beside my desk, staring at the darkness outside my room.

The footsteps stopped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then a familiar voice came from the hallway.

"Sofia."

Damian.

I released the breath I was holding.

But I did not relax.

Not anymore.

Because I had learned something about Damian Costa.

He was not the only person hiding secrets.

I opened the door carefully.

Damian stood there alone.

His expression was different.

Not angry.

Not suspicious.

Worried.

That was the part that scared me most.

A man like Damian Costa was never supposed to look worried.

"What happened?" I asked.

He looked past me into my room.

"The security system detected another unauthorized connection."

I glanced at my computer.

The video from Elena was still frozen on the screen.

Damian noticed it immediately.

His eyes moved toward the USB drive.

Then back to me.

"You watched it."

I said nothing.

Because I knew the answer would change everything.

Damian stepped inside and closed the door behind him.

"What did she say?"

I looked at him.

"You already know."

His jaw tightened.

"No."

For the first time, I saw something in his face.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Then tell me the truth," I said.

Damian remained silent.

I pointed at the computer.

"She said someone inside your family destroyed her life."

His expression changed.

"Who else did she mention?"

I stared at him.

"That's what you care about?"

"No."

His answer came too quickly.

And that told me everything.

He cared.

He was afraid of a name.

A person.

A memory.

I stepped closer.

"Who are you protecting, Damian?"

He looked at me.

"I don't know anymore."

That was the first honest thing he had said.

Twenty years earlier, Damian Costa believed he controlled everything.

His company.

His money.

His empire.

But Elena Marquez had been the only person who saw what happened behind the scenes.

She was not just his assistant.

She was the person who knew every secret.

Every transaction.

Every conversation.

Every person who entered Damian's world.

And according to Damian, she discovered something she was never supposed to find.

A hidden financial network inside his company.

Someone had been moving millions of dollars through fake accounts.

Someone close to him.

Someone with access.

But when Elena tried to expose the truth, she disappeared.

And Damian made the mistake that haunted him for twenty years.

He believed the wrong person.

"I thought Elena betrayed me," Damian admitted.

We stood inside the library.

The same room where this nightmare started.

"Why?"

He looked at the old bookshelf.

"Because the evidence pointed toward her."

"What evidence?"

Damian hesitated.

"A video."

I frowned.

"A video?"

He nodded.

"The night Elena disappeared, I received footage showing her taking confidential files from my office."

I stared at him.

"And you believed it?"

"I did."

His voice became quieter.

"Because the person who sent it was someone I trusted."

"Who?"

Damian looked at me.

"My brother."

The answer hit harder than I expected.

Damian Costa had a brother.

A person nobody talked about.

A person erased from the public story of his life.

"Where is he now?"

Damian looked away.

"Dead."

The silence that followed felt heavy.

But something bothered me.

"Then why does someone keep warning me about your family?"

Damian had no answer.

Because he knew.

The past was not finished.

Later that night, Damian took me somewhere I never knew existed.

Below the mansion.

Far beneath the surveillance room.

There was another level.

A hidden underground archive.

The walls were covered with old documents, photographs, and locked containers.

I stopped walking.

"You had this here the entire time?"

Damian nodded.

"I built this place because secrets disappear when people have access to them."

I looked around.

"Or because you wanted to hide them."

He looked at me.

"Maybe both."

Inside one cabinet were dozens of files.

Elena Marquez.

My name.

My childhood records.

Everything.

Damian opened a folder.

Inside were photographs of me as a child.

I picked one up.

My hands started shaking.

I was six years old.

Standing beside my mother.

And beside us...

was Damian.

I looked at him.

"You knew me."

He did not answer.

"You knew who I was."

Damian slowly nodded.

"Yes."

The room became silent.

I felt something break inside me.

All those years.

All those questions.

All those nights wondering why my mother refused to talk about my father.

And this man knew.

"You watched me for eight days."

Damian looked down.

"Yes."

"But you knew me before that."

"I thought you were gone."

The words confused me.

"Gone?"

Damian picked up another document.

"When Elena disappeared, she told me one thing."

He looked at the paper.

"She said if anything happened to her, I had to protect her daughter."

My heart stopped.

"Your daughter?"

Damian looked at me.

"No."

A pause.

Then:

"My responsibility."

I stepped back.

"Who is my father?"

Damian did not answer.

And that silence was louder than any confession.

The next morning, something changed inside the mansion.

The employees were nervous.

The guards were everywhere.

Damian had doubled security.

But nobody told me why.

Until I found a message waiting on the kitchen table.

No envelope.

No name.

Just a piece of paper.

Three sentences.

"You found the archive."

"You found Damian's lies."

"Now find your father."

I looked around.

Nobody was there.

I turned the paper over.

There was a symbol drawn on the back.

A symbol I recognized.

Because I had seen it before.

On my mother's old necklace.

I immediately went back to my room.

The necklace was still inside the box.

But now something was different.

There was a hidden compartment I had never noticed.

Inside was a tiny key.

And a small piece of paper.

One address.

I searched the address online.

My hands went cold.

Because it was not a random location.

It was an abandoned Costa property.

A house Damian supposedly sold fifteen years ago.

A house that did not exist on any public record.

I grabbed my coat.

Before I could leave, Damian appeared in the doorway.

"You found it."

I froze.

"You knew about the address."

His face became serious.

"Yes."

"Then why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Elena told me never to take you there."

I stared at him.

"Why?"

Damian looked toward the hallway.

His voice became almost a whisper.

"Because that house is where your father disappeared."

I felt my heart race.

"My father is dead?"

Damian did not answer.

And that was when I understood.

He was hiding something bigger.

Something impossible.

That evening, I drove alone to the abandoned Costa property.

I ignored Damian's warnings.

I needed answers.

The house stood empty.

Broken windows.

Old walls.

A place forgotten by everyone.

But when I stepped inside, I realized something.

Someone had been there recently.

The dust was disturbed.

A chair was moved.

A light was on.

Someone was living there.

I walked deeper into the house.

At the end of the hallway was a locked door.

The same symbol from my mother's necklace was carved into the wood.

My hands shook as I placed the key inside.

It turned.

The lock opened.

I pushed the door slowly.

Inside was a small room.

A table.

A chair.

And hundreds of photographs covering the walls.

Photographs of me.

My entire life.

Someone had been watching me long before Damian ever did.

Then I saw the final photograph.

The one placed in the center.

A picture of my mother.

Damian.

And a man I had never seen before.

On the back of the photograph was one sentence.

"He was never dead."

Suddenly, the old house phone on the table started ringing.

I slowly picked it up.

A voice answered.

A voice I had never heard before.

But somehow...

I knew exactly who it was.

The man whispered my name.

"Sofia..."

May you like

Then he said:

"I've been waiting twenty years for you to find me."
