Chapter 5 - My Father's Second Betrayal

Rachel found Daniel before Ethan's security team did.

He was at the train station.

One suitcase.

One coat.

One envelope.

“Running again?”

Daniel turned.

His face collapsed when he saw her.

“Rachel.”

“You're very good at disappearing.”

“Listen to me.”

“No.”

She held up her phone.

“I watched the video.”

“I didn't steal those documents.”

“You walked out carrying them.”

“To protect them.”

“From whom?”

Daniel looked around.

“Vale.”

Rachel laughed bitterly.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“He has someone inside Cole Meridian.”

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Convenient.”

Daniel opened his suitcase.

The documents were inside.

Rachel froze.

“You still have them.”

“Yes.”

“Then why run?”

“Because Vale called me.”

He handed her his phone.

There was a photograph.

Claire leaving her apartment.

Rachel's blood went cold.

Below it was a message.

GIVE ME THE ORIGINALS OR YOUR OTHER DAUGHTER PAYS FOR REBECCA'S MISTAKE.

Rachel looked up.

“Other daughter?”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Rachel stopped breathing.

“What does that mean?”

“Claire isn't your mother's daughter.”

The station noise seemed to disappear.

Rachel stared at him.

“What?”

Daniel explained.

Years after leaving Rebecca, he had another relationship.

A daughter was born.

Her mother died when Claire was a baby.

Daniel, still hiding, couldn't raise her.

Rebecca learned about the child.

And somehow, despite everything Daniel had done, Rebecca took Claire in.

Rachel remembered her mother saying Claire had been adopted privately.

She never knew more.

“Mom raised your daughter?”

Daniel nodded.

“After what you did to her?”

“Yes.”

Rachel turned away.

Her mother had been stronger than Rachel ever understood.

She had raised the child of the man who abandoned her.

Not because Daniel deserved forgiveness.

Because Claire deserved a mother.

Rachel wiped her eyes.

“Where is Claire?”

“Safe. Ethan's people reached her.”

Rachel looked at him.

“You should have told us.”

“I panicked.”

“You always panic.”

Daniel flinched.

“That's what you do. You get scared, and everyone else pays.”

“I know.”

“No.”

Rachel faced him.

“You don't get to fix twenty-eight years by saying you know.”

Daniel nodded.

For once, he didn't argue.

Rachel took the documents.

“Come with me.”

“Where?”

“To stop running.”

The following morning, Rachel filed her claim.

Ethan stood beside her.

Not as her boyfriend.

Not as a billionaire savior.

As the CEO acknowledging that his company had benefited from Rebecca Bennett's stolen work.

The press conference stunned Wall Street.

Ethan announced an independent investigation.

He temporarily stepped aside from voting on all matters involving Rebecca's estate.

He invited regulators to review the original transactions.

Cole Meridian stock fell twelve percent.

Rachel watched billions vanish on television.

“You're really doing this.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Yes.”

“Doesn't it scare you?”

“Terrifies me.”

“Then why?”

He smiled faintly.

“Being afraid and being wrong aren't the same thing.”

Rachel thought of Daniel.

That was the difference.

Both men had been afraid.

Only one chose not to run.

Vale responded with war.

His attorneys claimed the documents were fabricated.

Then they produced something devastating.

A video.

Rebecca Bennett.

Recorded twenty-seven years earlier.

In it, Rebecca appeared to say she had voluntarily surrendered all claims.

News networks played the clip repeatedly.

Rachel watched in horror.

“Is it real?”

Victoria examined it.

“The video is real.”

Rachel's heart sank.

“But?”

Victoria paused the frame.

“Look at her left hand.”

Rebecca's fingers were tapping against the table.

Three taps.

Pause.

Two taps.

Pause.

Three.

Rachel frowned.

“What is that?”

Ethan recognized it.

“Her authentication code.”

Rebecca had built coded physical signals into her early security work.

The pattern meant one thing.

COERCION.

Rachel stared at the screen.

Her mother had known someone might someday see the recording.

She had left a message.

Even while being forced to surrender, Rebecca had fought.

The investigation changed overnight.

Experts verified the pattern existed in Rebecca's notebooks years before the video.

Vale's credibility collapsed.

Then Daniel made his choice.

He went to federal investigators.

He confessed everything.

The fraudulent transfers.

The threats.

His own role.

All of it.

Rachel asked him why.

Daniel's answer was simple.

“Because your mother spent her life paying for my fear.”

He swallowed.

“You shouldn't spend yours doing the same.”

Daniel faced potential charges.

He went anyway.

For the first time, Rachel saw him not as the father she had lost.

Or the coward who had abandoned her.

Just a flawed man finally choosing responsibility.

That evening, Rachel met Ethan at the restaurant where they had first met.

Same table.

Same windows.

Rachel placed the pink makeup bag between them.

Ethan smiled.

“You brought it.”

“I considered leaving it home.”

“Dangerous.”

Rachel laughed.

Then she grew serious.

“What happens if I win?”

“You become very wealthy.”

“I'm serious.”

“So am I.”

“What happens to us?”

Ethan looked at her.

“That depends.”

“On?”

“Whether there's an us when the lawsuits are over.”

Rachel felt her heartbeat change.

“And you want there to be?”

“Yes.”

No elaborate speech.

Just yes.

Rachel smiled.

“I do too.”

Ethan reached for her hand.

Before his fingers touched hers, Rachel's phone buzzed.

Samuel Pierce.

She answered.

“Samuel?”

His voice was urgent.

“Rachel, don't sign anything tomorrow.”

She straightened.

“Why?”

“I found Rebecca's final amendment.”

“What amendment?”

Silence.

Then Samuel said:

“Cole Meridian isn't the company your mother left you.”

Rachel looked at Ethan.

“What are you talking about?”

May you like

Samuel took a breath.

“She left you something much bigger.”
