Chapter 6 - The Place Where Our Marriage Ended

The message remained on my phone screen.
"Colonel Hartwell, if you want your daughter to stay alive, come alone to the place where your marriage ended."
For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
Not because I believed the threat.
Because I knew exactly where they wanted me to go.
The place where my marriage ended.
Daniel's office.
The same place where I had walked in carrying the truth about our child.
The same place where I left carrying a broken heart.
Someone had chosen those words carefully.
They didn't want me to think about a location.
They wanted me to remember pain.
They wanted me emotional.
And emotional people made mistakes.
Military training taught me one thing above everything else.
Never walk into an unknown situation alone.
But this wasn't a battlefield.
This was my daughter.
My rules changed when Rose was involved.
"I have to go."
Daniel immediately looked at me.
"No."
His answer came so quickly that it almost surprised me.
I looked at him.
"Daniel—"
"No."
His voice was firm.
But this time, it wasn't arrogance.
It wasn't control.
It was fear.
"I am not letting you walk into a trap."
The room stayed silent.
The woman claiming to be his mother watched us carefully.
Marcus said nothing.
Because he understood.
For the first time, Daniel wasn't fighting to protect his company.
He was fighting to protect his family.
"Someone has been watching me for months," I said.
Daniel stepped closer.
"I know."
"They know about Rose."
"I know."
"They know where to find me."
His jaw tightened.
"And that's exactly why you are not going alone."
I looked at him.
Months ago, I would have wanted to hear those words.
I would have wanted him to fight for me.
Now hearing them hurt.
Because part of me wondered how different everything would have been if he had said them sooner.
"If you come with me, whoever sent this knows we found the truth."
Daniel looked at Rose.
Then at me.
"Emily."
His voice lowered.
"I already lost months with my daughter."
A pause.
"I won't lose another minute because I was too afraid to act."
Those words stayed with me.
Because for the first time, Daniel wasn't asking me to trust him.
He was admitting why he needed to earn it.
Marcus stepped forward.
"You shouldn't go to the location."
Daniel looked at him.
"You have another option?"
Marcus nodded.
"I have been tracking the person behind these messages."
I immediately turned.
"You didn't tell us?"
"I needed proof."
I didn't like the answer.
But I understood it.
"Who is it?"
Marcus hesitated.
That hesitation told me the answer was serious.
"Someone who has access to Hartwell security systems."
Daniel's expression changed.
"Inside the company."
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
The room became silent again.
Someone inside.
Again.
A person close enough to enter restricted areas.
Close enough to know private information.
Close enough to manipulate everything.
Daniel looked at his mother.
"You knew?"
The older woman lowered her eyes.
"I suspected."
Daniel stared.
"You suspected someone was destroying my life and you said nothing?"
Her face showed pain.
"I was trying to protect you."
"By disappearing?"
She looked away.
"Your father believed the only way to keep you alive was to make everyone think the past was gone."
Daniel laughed quietly.
But there was no humor in it.
"My entire life was built on lies."
Nobody answered.
Because nobody could deny it.
I looked at Rose.
She was sleeping peacefully.
The world around her was falling apart.
But she was safe in my arms.
And that was the only thing that mattered.
"We go together."
Daniel looked at me.
I continued.
"But we don't follow their rules."
Marcus nodded.
"Then we need to prepare."
Within twenty minutes, the conference room became something completely different.
Not a place for divorce.
A place for strategy.
Marcus pulled up building plans.
Daniel contacted security.
His mother sat silently, holding the old letter from his father.
And I stood there watching the man I married become someone I barely recognized.
Not because he was powerful.
Because he finally understood responsibility.
The elevator ride back down felt different.
The same glass walls.
The same city.
But this time, Daniel stood beside me.
Not ahead.
Not behind.
Beside.
Rose slept between us.
Neither of us spoke.
There were too many things left unsaid.
Too many wounds.
Too many questions.
But one thing had changed.
We were no longer fighting each other.
We were fighting whoever had tried to destroy us.
When we reached the lobby, Marcus stopped suddenly.
His phone showed an alert.
"What happened?"
He stared at the screen.
Then looked at Daniel.
"Someone accessed the Hartwell private server."
Daniel's expression hardened.
"When?"
Marcus swallowed.
"Three minutes ago."
I felt cold.
"While we were upstairs?"
Marcus nodded.
"Yes."
Daniel stepped closer.
"What did they take?"
Marcus looked at the screen.
Then his face changed.
"They didn't take anything."
That was worse.
"Then what did they do?"
Marcus slowly turned the phone around.
The screen showed a single file.
A file that had just been uploaded.
The title was simple.
ROSE HARTWELL.
Daniel went completely still.
"Open it."
Marcus hesitated.
Then clicked.
A video appeared.
The first frame showed me.
Not today.
Not in the conference room.
Months earlier.
During my pregnancy.
I was walking out of the hospital.
Holding my stomach.
Someone had filmed me.
Watching.
Waiting.
Then the camera moved.
A second person appeared.
Standing beside the person recording.
Daniel looked closer.
His face turned pale.
Because he recognized them.
"That's impossible."
I looked at him.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
The video continued.
The person stepped into the light.
And then a message appeared beneath the recording.
A message addressed to Daniel.
It said:
"Before you meet your daughter, you need to know who her mother really is."
Daniel stopped the video.
His hands were shaking.
"Emily."
I looked at him.
"What?"
He slowly turned the screen toward me.
The next file had just opened automatically.
A document.
My name at the top.
And a signature at the bottom.
A signature I had never seen before.
May you like
But Daniel recognized immediately.
Because it belonged to the person who had started this entire nightmare.
