Chapter 4 - The Voice Behind The Betrayal

The recording played.
A man’s voice filled the conference room:
"Daniel can never know about the baby."
I stopped breathing.
Daniel froze beside me.
Because he recognized the voice.
Not from a stranger.
Not from an enemy.
From someone who had sat at his dinner table.
Someone who had called himself family.
The recording continued.
The voice remained calm.
Almost emotionless.
"Once the divorce is finalized, everything will be easier."
My hand tightened around Rose.
I looked at Daniel.
The color had disappeared from his face.
For years, I had wondered why my marriage had fallen apart so quickly.
Why Daniel stopped answering my calls.
Why his lawyers appeared before he ever asked me what was happening.
Why every attempt I made to explain myself seemed to disappear before reaching him.
Now I finally had the answer.
Someone had been controlling the story.
Someone had been making sure we never had the conversation we needed.
Marcus stopped the recording.
The silence afterward felt heavier than the audio itself.
Daniel slowly turned toward him.
"Play it again."
Marcus didn't move.
"Daniel—"
"Play it again."
This time, his voice was colder.
The kind of voice that made entire companies stop and listen.
Marcus pressed play.
The recording repeated.
Daniel listened without blinking.
The second time was worse.
Because now he wasn't trying to understand.
He was accepting.
Someone had betrayed him.
Someone close.
When the recording ended, Daniel walked toward the window.
For a few seconds, he said nothing.
The city stretched below us.
Millions of people moving through their lives.
Completely unaware that inside the tallest building in Chicago, a billionaire was discovering that his own family had destroyed his marriage.
"How long?"
His voice was quiet.
Marcus looked at him.
"How long did they know?"
Daniel turned.
"About Emily."
Marcus hesitated.
"About the pregnancy?"
Daniel nodded.
"Before you did."
The answer came slowly.
"Six weeks."
My chest tightened.
Six weeks.
Someone knew I was carrying Daniel's child.
Someone knew while I was sitting alone at doctor's appointments.
Someone knew while I was trying to decide whether my marriage could still be saved.
Daniel closed his eyes.
Six weeks.
That number hurt him.
I could see it.
Because six weeks meant there had been time.
Time for someone to tell him.
Time for someone to stop the divorce.
Time for someone to let him become a father.
But they chose silence.
"Who?"
Daniel opened his eyes.
Marcus looked at me first.
Then at Daniel.
"I think you already know."
Nobody spoke.
Daniel's expression hardened.
"No."
Marcus remained silent.
"Say the name."
Marcus took a breath.
"The person who accessed your private records."
A pause.
"The person who ordered the paternity investigation."
Another pause.
"The person who delivered false information to your lawyers."
Daniel's hands slowly tightened.
"Who?"
Marcus finally answered.
"Victoria Hartwell."
The name hit the room.
Daniel stepped back.
"No."
It wasn't anger.
It was disbelief.
Victoria Hartwell.
His older sister.
The woman who had helped raise him after their father died.
The woman who sat beside him when he built Hartwell International.
The woman he trusted more than anyone.
I had met her many times.
She had always been polite.
Elegant.
Controlled.
She had hugged me on my wedding day.
She had told me I was exactly the kind of woman Daniel needed.
Now I wondered if that had ever been true.
Daniel shook his head.
"My sister wouldn't do this."
Marcus looked at him.
"She already did."
"No."
Daniel's voice became sharper.
"You don't understand."
"I understand perfectly."
Marcus placed another file on the table.
"Your sister believed Emily was a threat."
I looked at him.
"A threat?"
Marcus nodded.
"Not because of Rose."
"Because of me?"
The question came out before I could stop it.
Marcus looked at me.
"Yes."
Daniel looked confused.
"Why?"
Marcus opened the file.
Inside were financial records.
Company documents.
Emails.
"Because Victoria believed your marriage changed your priorities."
Daniel stared at the papers.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It does if she believed Hartwell International belonged to the family before it belonged to you."
The room became silent.
I remembered something.
A conversation with Victoria months before my pregnancy.
She had smiled while drinking coffee.
She had asked me something strange.
"Do you ever worry Daniel's attention will move away from the company?"
At the time, I thought she was talking about work.
Now I understood.
She wasn't worried about Daniel losing focus.
She was worried about losing control.
Daniel picked up one of the documents.
His eyes moved quickly across the page.
Then stopped.
"What is this?"
Marcus looked at him.
"A transfer request."
Daniel's expression changed.
"From my private account?"
I stepped closer.
"What does it say?"
He didn't answer.
Marcus did.
"Victoria attempted to move ownership shares."
Daniel looked up.
"She couldn't."
"No."
Marcus shook his head.
"Because Emily discovered it."
My heart stopped.
Daniel looked at me.
"You knew?"
I nodded slowly.
"That's why I came to your office."
The memory came back.
The day everything changed.
I had walked into his office with documents.
I had tried to warn him.
But when I arrived, his assistant told me he was unavailable.
Then his lawyer called.
Then the divorce papers appeared.
"I was trying to tell you."
My voice became quieter.
"I thought you didn't want to hear me."
Daniel looked away.
The guilt on his face was impossible to miss.
Because now he remembered.
Every missed call.
Every ignored message.
Every moment when he chose business over me.
Marcus closed the file.
"Victoria knew Emily was close to exposing the financial issue."
"So she created another problem."
Daniel understood immediately.
"The divorce."
Marcus nodded.
"She convinced you Emily was leaving you."
Daniel looked at me.
"And she convinced Emily I didn't care."
I didn't answer.
Because that was exactly what happened.
Someone didn't just separate us.
They made sure we separated ourselves.
Rose made a small sound.
Both of us looked down.
For one second, everything else disappeared.
The documents.
The betrayal.
The anger.
There was only a father looking at his daughter.
Daniel reached out slowly.
This time, I let him touch her tiny hand.
His expression softened.
"I missed so much."
I didn't know what to say.
Because forgiveness wasn't something that happened in one moment.
Trust wasn't rebuilt because someone finally understood the truth.
But I saw something different in him.
Not the billionaire.
Not the businessman.
A father.
Then Daniel's phone rang.
The sound cut through the room.
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
"Who is it?"
He didn't answer.
Because the caller ID was impossible.
The name displayed on the screen belonged to someone who should not have been able to contact him.
Someone who had disappeared two years earlier.
Someone connected to the secret behind Rose.
Daniel slowly answered.
"Hello?"
Nobody spoke.
Then a woman's voice whispered through the phone.
"Daniel... if Emily is with you, you need to leave that building immediately."
Daniel stood still.
"Who is this?"
A pause.
Then the woman said:
"Your mother."
The phone slipped slightly in his hand.
May you like
Because Daniel Hartwell's mother had been dead for twelve years.
And then the elevator outside the conference room began moving upward.
