Chapter 3 - The Files That Could Destroy Everything

Emma Whitmore had always believed secrets were dangerous.

But she had never understood how dangerous until that night.

Because secrets were not just hidden words.

They were choices.

They were people protecting something.

They were reasons someone could look at another human being and decide that fear was easier than honesty.

And standing inside the nearly empty office, watching Caleb Mercer study the files on her computer, Emma realized she had been surrounded by secrets for much longer than she knew.

The rain continued falling outside.

The city lights blurred behind the glass windows, turning Boston into a painting of gold and gray.

Normally, Emma loved looking at the skyline from the thirty-second floor.

It reminded her that there was a world beyond her problems.

Tonight, it felt like she was trapped above the world instead.

Caleb ended the phone call.

The silence that followed was unbearable.

Emma looked at him carefully.

“What did they find?”

Caleb didn’t answer immediately.

That worried her.

People like Caleb Mercer were not the type of people who hesitated.

He made decisions quickly.

He spoke carefully.

He always seemed ten steps ahead.

But now, for the first time, he looked like he was calculating how much truth she could handle.

Emma noticed.

“What?”

Caleb looked at her.

“You need to understand something.”

His voice was calm.

“Everything you’ve found tonight is connected.”

Emma’s fingers tightened around her purse strap.

“Connected to what?”

Caleb glanced at Grant.

The message was clear.

Not here.

Not in front of him.

Grant noticed too.

“I think this conversation has gone far enough.”

Nobody responded.

Grant forced a smile.

“Mr. Mercer, Emma is exhausted. She’s clearly confused.”

Emma looked at him.

The audacity almost made her laugh.

After everything he had done, after everything he had said, he still thought he could control the situation.

But something had changed.

Because for the first time, Grant wasn’t the most powerful person in the room.

Caleb turned toward him.

“Leave.”

Grant froze.

“I’m sorry?”

“You heard me.”

Grant’s expression hardened.

“You can’t just dismiss me because of an accusation.”

Caleb stepped closer.

“I’m not dismissing you because of an accusation.”

A pause.

“I’m removing you because I’ve seen enough.”

The confidence disappeared from Grant’s face.

Emma watched as he reached for his phone.

Caleb noticed.

“Don’t.”

Grant stopped.

“What?”

“Calling someone won’t help you.”

The words were quiet.

But they carried a warning.

Grant stared at him.

“You have no idea who you’re dealing with.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then Caleb said something that changed the entire atmosphere.

“I know exactly who I’m dealing with.”

Grant’s face lost color.

Emma felt a strange sense of confusion.

What did Caleb know?

How long had he been watching?

Why had he come to this office tonight?

She had assumed he came because he caught Grant.

But now she wasn’t sure.

Maybe Grant wasn’t the reason.

Maybe Grant was just part of something bigger.

Caleb walked back to Emma’s computer.

“Show me everything you found.”

Emma hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because if you found this accidentally, you’re in danger.”

Her heart skipped.

“In danger?”

Caleb looked at her.

“Yes.”

The directness of the answer scared her.

Emma had expected reassurance.

She had expected him to say everything would be okay.

But Caleb Mercer didn’t lie.

And somehow, that made his words more frightening.

“What exactly did I find?”

Caleb looked at the screen.

“That’s what we need to determine.”

He clicked through the documents carefully.

Emma watched his face.

She was searching for any reaction.

Anything.

A clue.

A sign.

After several seconds, Caleb stopped.

“What?”

Emma leaned closer.

“What is it?”

Caleb pointed at a shipment code.

“This.”

Emma looked at the number.

“I’ve seen that before.”

“Where?”

She thought.

Then suddenly remembered.

“Grant.”

Both Caleb and Emma looked toward him.

Grant’s expression changed.

Only for a second.

But it was enough.

Emma noticed.

“You knew.”

Grant said nothing.

“You knew about this code.”

Grant looked away.

Caleb’s voice became colder.

“Answer her.”

Grant laughed softly.

“You think this proves something?”

Emma felt anger rising.

“You knew.”

Grant looked at her.

“You don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

For the first time, Grant looked less like a threat and more like someone cornered.

“You have no idea what you’re involved in.”

Emma felt a chill.

“I’m involved because you made me involved.”

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

A pause.

“You were involved before you even started working here.”

Emma stopped breathing.

The words hit harder than any threat.

“What does that mean?”

Grant didn’t answer.

Caleb stepped forward.

“Choose your next words carefully.”

Grant looked at him.

“You really don’t know?”

The question was directed at Caleb.

That surprised Emma.

Because it meant something.

Grant knew something Caleb didn’t.

For the first time that night, Caleb’s expression changed.

Slightly.

But enough.

Emma saw it.

“You don’t know?”

Caleb ignored her.

“Explain.”

Grant smiled.

A small, nervous smile.

“You should ask her.”

Emma looked at Caleb.

Then back at Grant.

“Ask me what?”

Grant said nothing.

Caleb’s eyes narrowed.

“Enough.”

Grant shook his head.

“No.”

His voice became stronger.

“You walked in here thinking you were protecting her.”

He looked at Emma.

“But you don’t even know why she was hired.”

Emma felt cold.

The room seemed to shrink.

“What are you talking about?”

Grant looked at her.

“Ask Caleb.”

Emma turned.

Caleb remained silent.

And that silence frightened her more than anything Grant had said.

Because silence from Caleb Mercer was not uncertainty.

It was confirmation that there was something he wasn’t telling her.

Emma stepped back.

“Caleb.”

He looked at her.

“Why did you come here tonight?”

A long pause.

Finally, he answered.

“Because someone tried to delete these files.”

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“An hour before I arrived, someone accessed the company archive system.”

He looked at the screen.

“They attempted to remove records connected to these shipments.”

Emma’s heart started pounding.

“But why?”

Caleb looked at her.

“That’s what I’m trying to find out.”

Grant laughed quietly.

“You really don’t know.”

Caleb turned.

“Be careful.”

“No.”

Grant looked at Emma.

“She deserves to know.”

Emma felt fear creeping in.

“Know what?”

Grant’s expression changed.

For the first time, he wasn’t looking at her like an employee.

He was looking at her like a piece of a puzzle.

“Why do you think you got this job, Emma?”

She swallowed.

“Because I was qualified.”

Grant smiled sadly.

“That’s what they wanted you to believe.”

Emma felt her chest tighten.

“No.”

“Yes.”

He took a step forward.

“Your application was never supposed to reach human resources.”

Caleb’s expression became serious.

“Grant.”

But Grant continued.

“You were placed here.”

Emma shook her head.

“That’s impossible.”

“You think someone like you just happens to discover illegal shipping records?”

Her eyes narrowed.

“What are you saying?”

Grant looked at Caleb.

Then back at her.

“I’m saying someone wanted you here.”

The office went silent.

Emma looked at Caleb.

She wanted him to deny it.

Immediately.

She wanted him to tell her Grant was lying.

But Caleb didn’t.

And that hurt.

“Caleb?”

His eyes met hers.

“Emma…”

She stepped back.

“No.”

Her voice trembled.

“No, don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Look at me like you already know.”

The words hung in the air.

Caleb didn’t respond.

And that was the answer.

Emma felt betrayed.

Not because Caleb had done something wrong.

Because she realized he had known more than he admitted.

“You knew.”

Caleb was silent.

“How long?”

“Emma—”

“How long did you know something was wrong?”

Caleb looked away for a moment.

That was enough.

Emma laughed quietly.

Not because it was funny.

Because she didn’t know what else to do.

All her life, she had fought to protect herself.

To protect Lily.

To build a normal life.

And now she discovered her entire career might have been built on someone else’s plan.

Grant looked satisfied.

But Caleb noticed.

His expression turned dangerous.

“You’re enjoying this.”

Grant said nothing.

Caleb stepped toward him.

“This was never about exposing Emma.”

A pause.

“You wanted to scare her.”

Grant smiled.

“And now she knows.”

Caleb looked at him.

“No.”

His voice became colder.

“Now she knows enough to ask the right questions.”

Emma stood between them, overwhelmed.

Then Caleb’s phone rang again.

He answered.

This time, the call lasted only a few seconds.

But when he ended it, his face had changed completely.

“What happened?” Emma asked.

Caleb looked at the computer screen.

Then at her.

Then toward the locked office door.

“Security found something.”

Emma waited.

Caleb spoke quietly.

“The person who tried to delete the files…”

A pause.

“Wasn’t Grant.”

Emma’s heart stopped.

“Then who?”

Caleb’s eyes moved to the screen.

To the hidden access record.

To a name that appeared beside the deleted files.

A name Emma recognized.

A name that made her blood run cold.

Because it belonged to someone connected to Lily.

Someone she trusted.

Caleb looked at her.

“Emma.”

His voice softened.

“Your sister may not be the reason you were threatened.”

May you like

Another pause.

“She may be the reason you were brought here.”
