Chapter 2 - The Man Who Knew Too Much

Emma Whitmore had spent the last several months learning one important lesson.

Never expect someone powerful to help you.

Powerful people didn’t step into difficult situations because they cared.

They stepped in because they wanted something.

That was how the world worked.

At least, that was what Emma believed.

Until Caleb Mercer walked into the office.

The silence after his question felt heavier than anything that had happened before.

“Were you?”

Two words.

Nothing more.

But Grant Holloway looked like he had been caught standing over a crime scene.

Emma watched the change happen in real time.

The confident smile disappeared.

The relaxed posture vanished.

The man who had spent months reminding her how replaceable she was suddenly looked like someone who realized he was the one in danger.

Grant cleared his throat.

“Mr. Mercer, I think there’s been a misunderstanding.”

Caleb didn’t blink.

“Has there?”

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

Emma had met angry people before.

Anger was easy to understand.

Anger was loud.

It came with raised voices and obvious threats.

But Caleb Mercer wasn’t angry.

He was controlled.

And somehow that was worse.

Grant adjusted his jacket.

“We were discussing work.”

Caleb’s eyes moved toward Emma.

Not quickly.

Not dramatically.

Just enough.

Emma understood the question without him saying it.

Were they?

For a second, she thought about lying.

She thought about what Grant had said.

The insurance.

Lily.

The job.

Everything she could lose.

Her entire life had become a balancing act built on avoiding mistakes.

But then she remembered the way Grant had stood between her and the door.

The way he had used Lily’s name like a weapon.

The way he believed she would stay silent because she had no other choice.

Emma looked directly at Caleb.

“No.”

Grant’s face changed.

“Emma.”

She ignored him.

“No, we weren’t discussing work.”

The office became completely silent.

Even the rain outside seemed quieter.

Grant stared at her.

Not shocked.

Not hurt.

Angry.

Because he never expected her to speak.

Caleb noticed.

Emma could tell.

He noticed everything.

“How long?” Caleb asked.

The question was directed at her.

Emma frowned.

“What?”

“How long has this been happening?”

Grant stepped forward.

“That’s not relevant.”

Caleb turned his head slightly.

The movement was small.

But Grant stopped immediately.

Emma noticed that too.

Everyone knew Caleb Mercer was successful.

Everyone knew he owned one of Boston’s largest logistics companies.

Everyone knew he was wealthy.

But nobody talked about the other side of him.

The side that made executives lower their voices when his name came up.

The side that made people think twice before crossing him.

Emma had always assumed those rumors were exaggerated.

Now she wasn’t sure.

She swallowed.

“Months.”

Grant looked furious.

“Emma, be careful.”

Caleb looked at him.

“Is that a threat?”

“No.”

Grant immediately answered.

Too quickly.

Caleb looked back at Emma.

She saw something in his expression.

Not pity.

She hated pity.

It made her feel small.

This was different.

It was recognition.

Like he understood exactly what kind of situation she had been trapped in.

“I should have said something earlier,” Emma whispered.

Caleb’s expression softened slightly.

“Why didn’t you?”

The answer was simple.

But saying it out loud felt humiliating.

“Because I need this job.”

Grant smiled faintly.

There it was.

The proof.

The reason he had always known he could control her.

Emma continued.

“My sister’s medical care depends on my insurance.”

Caleb’s eyes sharpened.

“Your sister?”

Emma nodded.

“Lily.”

The name seemed to change something.

Not much.

A tiny reaction.

But she saw it.

Caleb knew that name.

Her stomach tightened.

“How do you know about Lily?” Emma asked.

Caleb didn’t answer immediately.

That scared her more than if he had.

Grant suddenly stepped in.

“Mr. Mercer, this is becoming inappropriate.”

Caleb ignored him.

“Emma.”

She looked at him.

“Who told you I knew about your sister?”

Emma hesitated.

“Grant did.”

A strange silence followed.

Caleb slowly turned toward Grant.

“You told her I knew?”

Grant’s face went pale.

“No, I—”

He stopped.

Because he had just revealed something.

Emma saw it.

Caleb saw it.

Grant knew he had made a mistake.

Caleb walked toward Emma’s desk.

Not toward Grant.

Toward the computer.

The screen was still open.

The spreadsheet.

The shipping records.

Emma instinctively moved aside.

Caleb looked at the numbers.

For several seconds, he said nothing.

Then his expression changed.

Not surprise.

Recognition.

“What are these?”

Emma looked at the monitor.

“Shipping adjustments.”

“Why are you reviewing them?”

“Because they don’t match.”

Caleb looked at her.

“Explain.”

Emma hesitated.

She wasn’t sure why she suddenly felt nervous.

Not because of Caleb.

Because she realized something.

She had discovered something important.

Something important enough that Grant had risked exposing himself to stop her.

“I noticed several freight records were altered after approval.”

Caleb’s eyes moved across the screen.

“Which records?”

Emma pointed.

“These ones.”

He leaned closer.

The rain continued hitting the windows behind them.

“The changes were small,” Emma said.

“Small enough that nobody would notice unless they were comparing original documents.”

Caleb looked at her.

“You were comparing original documents?”

Emma nodded.

“Something felt wrong.”

For the first time that night, Caleb looked impressed.

Not because of her position.

Not because of her title.

Because of what she had found.

“You weren’t supposed to see these.”

Grant spoke.

The room froze.

Everyone turned.

Grant realized what he had said.

Too late.

Caleb slowly looked at him.

“Interesting choice of words.”

Grant forced a laugh.

“That’s not what I meant.”

“No?”

Caleb’s voice became colder.

“Then what did you mean?”

Grant looked between them.

“I meant these files are confidential.”

Emma frowned.

“Since when?”

Grant didn’t answer.

Because he knew.

Emma had worked there for three years.

She handled reports.

She processed documents.

She had access to these records.

At least, she thought she did.

Caleb tapped the screen.

“These adjustments.”

He looked at Emma.

“Who else knows you found them?”

Emma shook her head.

“Nobody.”

Caleb looked at Grant.

“Are you sure?”

Emma thought back.

Grant had appeared every time.

Every single time.

Whenever she opened the records.

Whenever she compared numbers.

Whenever she stayed late.

Her blood ran cold.

“Wait.”

Both men looked at her.

Emma slowly stood.

“He knew.”

Caleb watched her carefully.

“What?”

“Every time I opened these files, Grant showed up.”

Grant immediately interrupted.

“That’s ridiculous.”

Emma ignored him.

“He knew what I was looking at.”

Caleb’s expression darkened.

“And tonight?”

Emma looked at her computer.

“Tonight I found another adjustment.”

Silence.

Grant’s face changed again.

Caleb noticed.

Of course he noticed.

“What adjustment?”

Emma clicked through the files.

She opened the document.

A shipment number appeared.

A destination.

A financial code.

Then she stopped.

Because she had never seen that code before.

Caleb moved closer.

“What is it?”

Emma stared at the screen.

“I don’t know.”

Caleb studied the information.

Then he reached for his phone.

Emma watched him.

“Who are you calling?”

He didn’t answer.

He made the call.

The person on the other end picked up immediately.

“Check the security archives from this office tonight,” Caleb said.

A pause.

“Yes. Everything.”

Another pause.

“And find out who accessed these files before Emma did.”

Emma felt a chill.

Because Caleb wasn’t investigating anymore.

He already suspected something.

Something much bigger.

Grant suddenly stepped backward.

Only one step.

But Emma noticed.

He was preparing to leave.

Caleb noticed too.

“Don’t.”

Grant stopped.

“You’re making a mistake.”

Caleb looked at him.

“No.”

A pause.

“I think I finally found the mistake.”

Grant’s face hardened.

“You don’t know what you’re dealing with.”

Caleb’s eyes became colder.

“Neither do you.”

Emma stood silently between them.

She had walked into work that morning believing her biggest problem was keeping her job.

Now, standing in an empty office with Boston’s most feared businessman and the man who had controlled her life for months, she realized something terrifying.

Grant Holloway hadn’t been trying to silence her because of her sister.

Not completely.

Lily was only part of the reason.

The real reason was hidden inside those files.

And Caleb Mercer already knew enough to be afraid.

Then his phone rang.

He answered.

His expression changed after only a few seconds.

Emma watched his face carefully.

Because whatever the person on the other end had said...

It wasn’t good.

Caleb looked at Grant.

Then at Emma.

And finally, he spoke.

“Emma.”

Her heart tightened.

“Yes?”

His voice was quieter now.

More serious than before.

“The reason Grant knew about your sister…”

He paused.

“And the reason he was watching these files…”

Another pause.

“May be connected.”

Emma felt the world shift beneath her feet.

May you like

Because suddenly the question wasn’t why Grant wanted her silent.

The question was why someone had placed her inside that company in the first place.
