Chapter 5 - The Secret Rebecca Buried

The door opened slowly.
Adrian did not move.
Neither did Claire.
For a moment, the entire world seemed to stop.
Then Rebecca Hale stepped inside.
She looked exactly the same as she had every morning for twelve years.
Perfectly dressed.
Perfectly calm.
Perfectly controlled.
The same woman who had organized Adrian's life down to the smallest detail was now standing in the apartment where his daughter lived.
Her eyes moved immediately.
First to Adrian.
Then to Claire.
Then to Emma.
And finally to the bracelet in Adrian's hand.
Her expression changed.
Only for a second.
But Adrian saw it.
Fear.
Not surprise.
Not confusion.
Fear.
"You found it."
Rebecca's voice was quiet.
Adrian stared at her.
"You knew."
She closed the door behind her.
The sound of the lock clicking felt louder than it should have.
"I knew you would eventually."
Claire stepped forward.
"What are you doing here?"
Rebecca looked at her.
The two women stared at each other.
One had spent seven years hiding pain.
The other had spent seven years hiding the truth.
"I came to stop him from making the same mistake twice."
Adrian's eyes narrowed.
"You don't get to talk about my mistakes."
Rebecca looked at him.
And for the first time in twelve years, Adrian saw something different in her face.
Not loyalty.
Not professionalism.
Possession.
"You still don't understand."
Her words were calm.
"That's the problem with you, Adrian. You always think the truth is something you can simply discover when you're ready."
Claire's voice became cold.
"No. The problem is that she spent years making sure he never found it."
Rebecca ignored her.
She looked at Adrian.
"You think Claire was the victim."
Adrian stepped closer.
"Wasn't she?"
Rebecca smiled slightly.
A small, bitter smile.
"You really have no idea what happened."
Adrian felt his anger rising.
"Then explain."
Rebecca looked toward Emma.
The little girl was standing behind Claire, watching silently.
Rebecca's expression softened for a brief moment.
Then it disappeared.
"Emma should not have been part of this."
Claire immediately moved in front of her daughter.
"Don't say her name."
Rebecca looked at Claire.
"You still think you can protect her."
"I will always protect her."
Rebecca tilted her head.
"And that is exactly why you lost."
Adrian felt something shift.
There was history between them.
A history he had never known existed.
"Stop talking in riddles."
Rebecca looked at him.
"You want answers?"
She reached into her purse.
Adrian immediately noticed.
Claire noticed too.
"Don't."
Claire's voice was sharp.
Rebecca stopped.
Slowly, she pulled out a small envelope.
Not the old envelope.
A new one.
She placed it on the table.
"I kept this for seven years."
Adrian looked at it.
"Why?"
"Because I thought one day you would understand."
Claire laughed quietly.
"You thought one day he would choose you."
Rebecca's eyes hardened.
The sentence hit something.
Something real.
Adrian looked between them.
"Rebecca."
She turned toward him.
"Do you know why Claire never told you about Emma?"
Adrian said nothing.
"Because she was afraid."
"Afraid of what?"
Rebecca looked at Claire.
"Afraid that if you knew the truth, you would come back."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
Claire looked away.
Rebecca continued.
"She knew you."
Her voice became sharper.
"She knew you would feel guilty. She knew you would try to fix everything. She knew you would come back because you hate losing."
Adrian felt a strange anger.
Because part of it sounded true.
But another part felt wrong.
"You are saying Claire hid my daughter because she wanted revenge?"
Rebecca smiled.
"No."
She looked at him.
"She hid her because she loved you."
The answer shocked him.
Even Claire looked surprised.
Rebecca walked closer.
"And that is why she is dangerous."
Adrian stared.
"What are you talking about?"
Rebecca looked at the bracelet.
"Your daughter was never the secret."
Those words again.
The same words from the letter.
Adrian felt cold.
"Then what was?"
Rebecca did not answer immediately.
Instead, she looked at Claire.
"Tell him."
Claire remained silent.
"Tell him what happened the night you left."
Adrian turned to Claire.
"What happened?"
Claire's face changed.
The pain returned.
The same pain she had carried for years.
"I received a message."
Adrian waited.
"From your phone."
His eyes narrowed.
"My phone?"
Claire nodded.
"It said you wanted me gone."
Adrian looked confused.
"I never sent that."
"I know."
The room went silent.
Claire continued.
"There was a photo attached."
"What photo?"
Claire looked at Rebecca.
Rebecca looked away.
"A picture of you and the woman you were seeing."
Adrian's jaw tightened.
Because the woman was real.
The betrayal was real.
But Claire continued.
"Under the picture was a message."
Her voice shook.
"It said if I stayed, Emma would disappear."
Adrian froze.
"What?"
Claire looked at him.
"I didn't know if it was a threat."
She swallowed.
"But I knew someone had access to your life."
Adrian looked at Rebecca.
"No."
Rebecca's face remained calm.
But her eyes changed.
"Adrian..."
"Was it you?"
A long silence.
Then Rebecca said:
"I did what I had to do."
Adrian stepped back.
The words were not a denial.
They were worse.
"You threatened my wife."
"I protected you."
"You destroyed my family."
"I saved your company."
Adrian stared at her.
"What does that mean?"
Rebecca opened the second envelope.
Inside were documents.
She placed them on the table.
Adrian picked up the first page.
His eyes moved across the numbers.
Then stopped.
His face changed.
"What is this?"
Claire looked at him.
"I found it after I left."
Adrian continued reading.
Financial transfers.
Private accounts.
Money moving from one of his companies.
Millions.
His company.
His signature.
But he knew he never approved these.
"Someone was stealing from me."
Rebecca said nothing.
Adrian looked up.
"Was this your reason?"
Rebecca's expression became unreadable.
"No."
"Then why?"
She looked at him.
"Because I was trying to protect you from the person who was really controlling everything."
Adrian stared.
"What person?"
Rebecca's eyes moved toward Claire.
And Claire immediately became pale.
"No."
Adrian noticed.
"Claire?"
She stepped back.
"No."
"Who?"
Rebecca whispered:
"The person who knew about Emma before anyone else."
The apartment became silent.
Adrian looked at Claire.
Then Rebecca.
Then the documents.
Someone had manipulated his marriage.
Someone had hidden his daughter.
Someone had controlled every piece of his life.
And suddenly, he realized something.
Rebecca was afraid of someone too.
"Who is it?" Adrian asked.
Nobody answered.
Then Emma, who had been standing quietly in the hallway, spoke.
A small voice.
A voice that made all three adults turn.
"Mommy..."
Claire looked at her.
"What is it, sweetheart?"
Emma held a small photograph in her hand.
One Adrian had never seen before.
"I found this behind Grandma's old picture."
Claire walked toward her.
Then stopped.
Because she recognized the photo.
Adrian took it from Emma's hand.
The picture showed three people.
Claire.
Rebecca.
And another person standing between them.
A person Adrian knew very well.
A person he believed had been dead for years.
His hand started shaking.
Because on the back of the photograph was a handwritten message.
Three words.
May you like
"Your father lied."
And beneath it was a date from the week Adrian's father died...
