Chapter 6 - The Truth Buried At The Hospital

I couldn’t move after Daniel left.

His final words stayed in the hallway.

Ask him who was holding your daughter before you ever did.

I looked at Richard.

He looked away.

And that hurt more than anything.

Because Richard Bennett was not a man who avoided questions.

He faced angry investors.

He faced reporters.

He faced people who wanted to destroy his company.

But he couldn’t look me in the eyes.

“Richard.”

My voice barely came out.

“Tell me.”

He remained silent.

Ruby was standing beside me.

Holding my hand.

Feeling the tension even though she didn’t understand it.

“Mommy?”

I looked down at her.

She looked scared.

Not because she knew the truth.

Because she knew I was scared.

I forced myself to smile.

“It’s okay, baby.”

But she didn’t believe me.

Children always knew when adults were pretending.

Richard finally spoke.

“Ruby needs to go with someone else for a few minutes.”

I immediately shook my head.

“No.”

His eyes softened.

“Emily.”

“No.”

I held Ruby closer.

“I’m not letting anyone take her away while people keep secrets about her.”

Richard didn’t argue.

Instead, he nodded.

“You’re right.”

Those words surprised me.

Because powerful people rarely admitted when someone else was right.

He looked at Ruby.

“Can you wait with Mrs. Collins in the kitchen?”

Ruby looked at me.

I nodded.

“It’s okay.”

She hugged me tightly before leaving.

Only when she disappeared down the hallway did I finally let myself breathe.

“Start talking.”

Richard walked back into his office.

I followed.

The door closed behind us.

For the first time since I met him, Richard Bennett looked nervous.

Not uncomfortable.

Not angry.

Nervous.

“I was at the hospital the night Ruby was born.”

My chest tightened.

“Why?”

He looked down.

“Because Sarah called me.”

I froze.

“Sarah called you?”

“Yes.”

“Why would she call you?”

Richard sat down slowly.

“Because she was afraid.”

The room became silent.

“What was she afraid of?”

Richard looked at me.

“Daniel.”

My hands became cold.

“Explain.”

Richard took a deep breath.

“Sarah discovered what Daniel had done with the company finances. She found evidence that could send him to prison.”

I listened carefully.

“She was going to report him.”

“But she disappeared.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

“Did Daniel hurt her?”

Richard looked away.

“I don’t know.”

That answer scared me more than if he had said yes.

Because Richard Bennett always knew things.

He always had answers.

The fact that he didn’t know meant the truth was worse.

“What happened that night at the hospital?”

Richard leaned back.

“Sarah contacted me three weeks before Ruby was born.”

“Why you?”

“Because I had invested in the company Daniel worked for. I was one of the people who could expose him.”

I stared at him.

“So Sarah trusted you.”

“Yes.”

“What did she tell you?”

Richard’s eyes became distant.

“She told me Daniel was planning to disappear.”

My heart stopped.

“He planned it?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Richard hesitated.

“Because he knew the investigation was coming.”

I closed my eyes.

Everything suddenly made sense.

The excuses.

The distance.

The sudden disappearance.

“He didn’t leave because he wanted a fresh start.”

Richard shook his head.

“No.”

“He ran.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the floor.

For two years, I blamed myself.

I thought I wasn’t enough.

I thought I had done something wrong.

But Daniel hadn’t left because of me.

He left because he was running from what he had done.

“Then why did Sarah call you from the hospital?”

Richard’s expression changed.

“She gave birth that night.”

I looked at him.

“Sarah?”

He nodded.

My breathing became uneven.

“What happened to the baby?”

Richard didn’t answer immediately.

And that pause destroyed me.

“Richard.”

He finally spoke.

“The baby was sick.”

My heart pounded.

“And?”

“Sarah was afraid Daniel would find out.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew what he was capable of.”

I looked at him.

“You’re saying Ruby is…”

Richard didn’t finish.

He didn’t need to.

The possibility was already there.

The photograph.

The timing.

The secrets.

The lies.

“No.”

I whispered.

“No.”

Richard leaned forward.

“Emily, listen to me.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“Yes.”

His answer surprised me.

“She is.”

I looked at him.

“What does that mean?”

“It means biology doesn’t change the years you gave her.”

I looked away.

Because those words hurt.

Not because they were wrong.

Because they were exactly what I needed to hear.

“But I need the truth.”

Richard nodded.

“I know.”

He opened the drawer again.

This time, he removed another file.

“I kept this because Sarah asked me to.”

Inside was a letter.

Old.

Folded.

My name was written on the front.

Emily.

I stared at it.

“She wrote this?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“The night Ruby was born.”

My hands shook as I opened it.

The handwriting was messy.

Like someone writing quickly.

Like someone afraid they wouldn’t get another chance.

Emily,

If you are reading this, then something happened to me.

I stopped.

My vision blurred.

Richard looked away, giving me privacy.

I continued.

Daniel cannot know the truth. He will take everything from us if he finds out. I need you to understand one thing. The baby was never the problem. The people around her were.

My heart was beating faster.

I turned the page.

The rest of the letter was missing.

Only half remained.

“Where is the rest?”

Richard’s face changed.

“I don’t know.”

“Someone took it?”

“Yes.”

“Who?”

He didn’t answer.

Because we both knew.

Daniel.

I placed the letter down.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

Richard was silent.

Then:

“Because Sarah asked me not to.”

I looked at him.

“She trusted you with my daughter’s life.”

“Yes.”

“And you said nothing.”

Pain crossed his face.

“I thought I was protecting you.”

I laughed softly.

A broken sound.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Richard looked at me.

“What?”

“That they’re protecting me.”

I wiped my eyes.

“But nobody asks if I want the truth.”

He didn’t defend himself.

And somehow that made it worse.

Because he knew I was right.

A few hours later, we went to the private clinic Richard arranged.

No cameras.

No reporters.

No questions.

Just answers.

Ruby sat between us in the waiting room.

She swung her feet back and forth.

“Are we getting ice cream after this?”

I almost smiled.

“Yes.”

Richard looked at her.

“Definitely.”

She looked at him.

“Promise?”

He nodded.

“Promise.”

For the first time in days, I saw Ruby smile.

A real smile.

The kind she had before secrets entered our lives.

Then the nurse called my name.

“Emily Carter?”

I stood.

Richard stood too.

The nurse looked at Ruby.

Then at the paperwork.

Then back at me.

“Before we begin…”

Something about her expression made my heart race.

“What?”

She lowered her voice.

“There’s something unusual about this case.”

I froze.

“What do you mean?”

She looked at the file in her hand.

“The records we received from the original hospital don’t match.”

My blood ran cold.

“What records?”

She looked at Ruby.

Then whispered:

“Her birth certificate was changed after she was born.”

I couldn’t breathe.

Richard stepped forward.

“Changed by who?”

The nurse looked down at the file.

Then slowly turned it around.

A signature was visible at the bottom.

A signature I recognized.

Because I had seen it before.

The nurse whispered the name.

May you like

And the room went silent.

“Daniel Carter.”
