Chapter 4 - The Name He Tried To Hide

I stared at the message until the words stopped looking real.
Ask Richard what happened to Sarah.
Six words.
That was all.
But they carried the weight of a memory I had spent years trying to bury.
My fingers trembled around my phone.
Because Sarah wasn’t just a name.
She was the reason Daniel disappeared.
She was the reason I stopped asking questions.
She was the reason I learned that some truths were more painful than lies.
“Emily?”
I quickly locked my phone.
Richard was standing at the end of the hallway.
I hadn’t heard him approach.
That was unusual.
Richard Bennett was never silent by accident.
He noticed everything.
Especially things people tried to hide.
“Are you okay?” he asked.
I forced a smile.
“Yes.”
He didn’t believe me.
Not even for a second.
“Another lie.”
I looked away.
“I’m sorry.”
“Don’t apologize.”
His voice was softer than before.
“Just tell me what happened.”
I wanted to.
I really did.
But saying Sarah’s name out loud felt like opening a door that had been locked for years.
A door that led back to the worst night of my life.
“I got a message.”
Richard’s expression changed.
“From who?”
“I don’t know.”
“Show me.”
I hesitated.
That hesitation answered his question.
His eyes narrowed slightly.
“Emily.”
I looked at my phone.
Then handed it to him.
He read the message.
The second his eyes reached the name, his entire expression changed.
Not confusion.
Recognition.
That scared me more than anything.
“You know her.”
It wasn’t a question.
I swallowed.
“Who is Sarah?”
Richard didn’t answer.
He looked down at the phone again.
Then back at me.
“Where did you get this?”
“Someone sent it.”
“Who?”
“I don’t know.”
He walked toward the window.
For several seconds, he said nothing.
The powerful businessman disappeared again.
The same thing that happened when Daniel arrived.
Only this time, it was different.
This wasn’t anger.
It was regret.
“Richard.”
He closed his eyes briefly.
“I thought she was gone.”
My heart started racing.
“Who was she?”
He turned around.
“Sarah Morgan.”
The name felt strange.
But familiar.
Like I had heard it somewhere before.
“Why does Daniel know her?”
Richard remained silent.
That silence told me everything.
“Because of Daniel,” I whispered.
He looked at me.
“Yes.”
My stomach tightened.
“What happened?”
Richard walked back toward the desk.
He looked exhausted.
Like he had been carrying a secret for a long time.
“Before you started working here, Daniel worked with one of my companies.”
I frowned.
“Daniel told me he was struggling financially.”
Richard gave a humorless smile.
“Daniel was very good at making people believe what he wanted them to believe.”
I remembered.
The excuses.
The promises.
The endless explanations.
I had spent so much time wondering why I wasn’t enough for him.
Why he left.
Why he never came back.
Maybe I had been asking the wrong question.
“Who was Sarah?”
Richard looked toward the hallway where Ruby was sleeping.
Then lowered his voice.
“She was someone Daniel hurt.”
My breath caught.
“What does that mean?”
Richard didn’t answer immediately.
“I need to show you something.”
He walked toward his office.
I followed.
The office was the one place in the mansion I rarely entered unless I was cleaning.
It was filled with expensive furniture, shelves of awards, and framed photographs.
But that night, it felt different.
Like the room was holding secrets.
Richard opened a locked drawer.
Inside was a thin folder.
Old.
Worn.
He placed it on the desk.
“I kept this because I never knew if I would need it.”
I stared at the folder.
“What is it?”
“Evidence.”
My heart pounded.
“Against Daniel?”
Richard nodded.
I opened the folder carefully.
The first page was a photograph.
A woman.
Early thirties.
Brown hair.
A gentle smile.
Sarah Morgan.
I had never met her.
But something about her face made my chest hurt.
The next page was a report.
A business dispute.
A missing investment.
A lawsuit.
I looked at Richard.
“Daniel stole money?”
“Not exactly.”
“What does that mean?”
Richard leaned against the desk.
“It means Daniel knew how to hide things.”
I kept reading.
The documents described a company Daniel worked for years ago.
A company that collapsed after financial problems.
Sarah had been one of the employees who discovered irregular transactions.
“She found out what he was doing,” Richard said.
“And?”
“And Daniel made sure nobody believed her.”
My hands tightened around the papers.
“What happened to her?”
Richard looked away.
“She disappeared.”
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Like Daniel?”
Richard nodded slowly.
“Yes.”
The room felt smaller.
“He disappeared after Sarah vanished?”
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“And you knew?”
Richard didn’t defend himself.
“I knew something was wrong.”
“That’s not an answer.”
“No.”
His voice became quieter.
“It isn’t.”
I stared at him.
For the first time, I saw something beyond his wealth.
A man carrying guilt.
“You could have stopped him.”
Richard looked down.
“I tried.”
“But?”
“He was faster.”
I looked back at the file.
There was one more document.
A handwritten statement.
Signed by Sarah.
My eyes moved across the page.
Then stopped.
Because the final line was addressed to someone.
Not Richard.
Not the police.
Not a lawyer.
It was addressed to me.
Emily Carter.
My hands started shaking.
“That’s impossible.”
Richard looked at the page.
His face changed.
“What?”
I pointed.
“My name.”
He stepped closer.
The color drained from his face.
Because the statement was dated three months before I ever met Daniel.
“How did Sarah know me?”
Neither of us spoke.
Then Ruby screamed from upstairs.
“Mommy!”
I dropped the papers.
Richard and I ran.
I reached her room first.
She was sitting upright in bed.
Terrified.
“Ruby?”
She pointed toward the window.
“He was here.”
My heart stopped.
“Who?”
She looked at me.
“Daddy.”
Richard immediately moved toward the window.
It was locked.
The curtains were still moving.
Like someone had just been there.
I grabbed Ruby.
“Sweetheart, are you sure?”
She nodded.
“He was watching me.”
Richard’s face became cold.
Not angry.
Dangerously calm.
He checked the room.
Then the hallway.
Nothing.
No one.
But on the floor near the window was something I had never seen before.
A small envelope.
My name was written on the front.
Not Emily.
Not Mrs. Carter.
Just one word.
“Sarah.”
Richard picked it up.
His eyes met mine.
Neither of us wanted to open it.
Because we already knew.
Someone had been inside the room.
Someone who knew our secrets.
Richard slowly tore the envelope open.
Inside was a single photograph.
He looked at it first.
Then his face changed.
He handed it to me.
And when I saw the picture, I stopped breathing.
It was a photo of Sarah Morgan.
Standing beside Daniel.
Holding a baby.
A baby who looked exactly like Ruby.
May you like
And written on the back were four words.
“Your daughter isn’t yours.”
