Chapter 5 - The File That Exposed My Family

Richard Hale placed the file on the table.

He didn't throw it.

He didn't hide it.

He placed it carefully, like he knew exactly what was inside.

My mother stood behind him.

Valerie remained silent.

And my father...

My father couldn't even look at me.

That was when I understood.

They weren't afraid that I discovered the truth.

They were afraid of what I would do with it.

I looked at the folder.

My name was written across the front.

CLARA ANDERSON — CONFIDENTIAL

I looked at Richard.

"Why do you have a file with my name on it?"

He didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at my mother.

Then at my father.

Then back at me.

"Because your family spent years making sure you never saw it."

My mother's expression changed.

"Richard."

Just one word.

But the warning in her voice was obvious.

Richard ignored her.

For the first time in years, someone in that house ignored my mother.

I stepped closer.

"Open it."

My mother immediately spoke.

"Clara, don't do this."

I turned toward her.

"Don't do what?"

She looked nervous.

"Destroy your family over misunderstandings."

I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing.

Misunderstandings.

That was the word they always used.

A cruel comment?

A misunderstanding.

A hurtful action?

A misunderstanding.

My son being afraid to speak?

A misunderstanding.

I looked at Richard.

"Open the file."

He slowly opened the folder.

The first document was an agreement.

The second was a legal report.

The third was something that made my entire body go still.

A photograph.

It was a picture of me.

But I had never seen it before.

I was younger.

Much younger.

Standing beside Julian.

Before we were married.

Before Matthew was born.

Before my entire life changed.

I looked at Richard.

"What is this?"

He sat down.

"Your father created a trust fund for you before Julian died."

I frowned.

"I know about the trust."

"No."

Richard shook his head.

"You know about the version they wanted you to know."

He turned the page.

"The original trust was not just financial."

I kept reading.

The words became harder to understand.

Because they changed everything.

Julian had known.

Before his death, Julian had created a protection plan for me and Matthew.

Not because he expected me to fail.

Because he knew my family.

I looked up.

"How?"

Richard leaned back.

"Julian came to me six months before his accident."

My breathing stopped.

"You knew my husband?"

Richard nodded.

"He was worried."

My hands tightened.

"About what?"

Richard looked at my father.

Then my mother.

"About the people around you."

The room went silent.

I felt like the walls were closing in.

Julian had known.

The man I loved had seen something I couldn't.

And before he died, he tried to protect us.

"What did he tell you?"

Richard opened another document.

"He told me Clara would always believe the best in people."

My eyes burned.

"That's not a bad thing."

"No."

Richard looked at me.

"But it becomes dangerous when people use it against you."

I looked down.

Another document.

A handwritten note.

Julian's handwriting.

I knew it immediately.

My fingers shook as I picked it up.

The note was short.

If Clara ever finds this, it means she finally stopped protecting everyone except herself.

I couldn't continue reading.

Because those words felt like he was standing in front of me.

Like he knew exactly what would happen.

Like he knew I would spend years blaming myself.

I closed my eyes.

For a moment, I wasn't in my mother's house.

I was back in the hospital.

Holding Julian's hand.

Telling him everything would be okay.

Even when I knew it wasn't.

Richard spoke quietly.

"Julian discovered your mother and Valerie were trying to control the trust."

I looked up.

"What?"

"They believed your inheritance was the only thing keeping you independent."

I stared at him.

"My inheritance?"

Richard nodded.

"Your father created the trust when you were young. It was supposed to become accessible after certain conditions were met."

"What conditions?"

He looked at the papers.

"One condition was that you remained financially independent."

I didn't understand.

"Why?"

"Because your father wanted you to have freedom."

I looked at my father.

For the first time that day, he looked ashamed.

"But someone changed the terms."

My eyes moved back to Richard.

"Who?"

Richard didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Everyone in the room knew.

My mother.

Valerie.

My father.

They had spent years making me believe I was struggling.

They wanted me dependent.

They wanted me unsure.

They wanted me grateful.

And they almost succeeded.

Almost.

I stood up.

"Did Julian know about Matthew?"

Richard's expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

I showed him the hospital report.

The previous injuries.

The hidden pain.

Richard looked shocked.

"No."

My voice became quiet.

"Then he died believing my family would protect us."

Nobody spoke.

That silence was the answer.

My father finally looked at me.

"Clara..."

I turned toward him.

His eyes were full of regret.

But regret wasn't enough.

Not anymore.

"You knew."

He swallowed.

"I knew they were harsh."

"Harsh?"

My voice shook.

"My son was scared to tell me he was being hurt."

He looked down.

"I thought they would stop."

I stared at him.

"You thought?"

My father had no response.

Because there was no excuse.

Not for a child.

Not for my child.

I walked toward the door.

My mother suddenly spoke.

"Clara."

I stopped.

"You think you can just walk away?"

I slowly turned.

"What?"

She stood straighter.

"You have no idea what you're dealing with."

A strange calm came over me.

Because for years, that sentence would have scared me.

Not anymore.

"What am I dealing with?"

My mother looked at Richard.

Then at the file.

Then back at me.

"You really think your company is yours?"

The room became silent.

My heart stopped.

"What did you say?"

She smiled.

A small, cold smile.

"The business."

I stared at her.

"How do you know about my company?"

Nobody answered.

Then my father whispered:

"Clara..."

I looked at him.

"Tell me."

He looked broken.

"Your company was never as hidden as you thought."

I felt a chill.

"What does that mean?"

Richard closed the folder.

"It means someone has been monitoring your success for years."

I looked at him.

"Who?"

Richard's face became serious.

"The person who helped your family hide the trust."

My phone suddenly vibrated.

I looked down.

A message.

Unknown number.

One sentence.

Stop digging before you find out why Julian really died.

My hands went cold.

Because only a few people knew about Julian.

Only a few people knew the details of his death.

I looked at Richard.

He saw the message.

And his expression changed immediately.

"Clara."

"What?"

His voice dropped.

"Do not reply."

I stared at the screen.

"Why?"

Richard stood up slowly.

"Because that number..."

May you like

He looked toward the door.

"...belongs to someone who was supposed to be dead."
