Chapter 5 - The Price of the Truth

Dante ordered every guard away from the front entrance.

Lena stared at him.

“What are you doing?”

“If she feels trapped, we learn nothing.”

“She has a gun.”

“Yes.”

“That is my mother.”

“I know.”

Lena turned toward the monitor.

Evelyn remained outside.

The gun pointed downward.

Not threatening.

Waiting.

Dante activated the intercom.

“Put the weapon on the ground.”

Evelyn looked toward the camera.

“Dante?”

His expression shifted.

She knew him.

“Do it.”

Evelyn slowly placed the gun on the pavement.

“Now let my daughter open the door.”

“No.”

Lena grabbed the intercom.

“Mom?”

Evelyn’s face broke.

“Lena.”

One word.

Eleven years disappeared.

Lena pressed the unlock button.

Dante caught her wrist.

“No.”

“That is my mother.”

“It may also be a trap.”

“I don’t care.”

“I do.”

She looked at him.

Something passed between them.

Family.

Not romance.

Not obligation.

Something older.

Something inherited from two mothers who had spent their lives trying to keep both of them alive.

Dante released her.

“I go first.”

Evelyn entered.

The moment she saw Lena, she stopped.

Lena had imagined this moment countless ways in the last few hours.

Anger.

Screaming.

Questions.

Instead, she walked forward and slapped her mother.

The sound cracked through the entry hall.

Evelyn did not move.

Lena’s hand shook.

“You let me bury you.”

Tears filled Evelyn’s eyes.

“Yes.”

“You let me cry over an empty coffin.”

“Yes.”

“You let me spend eleven years thinking I was alone.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because they told me you would die if I came back.”

Lena’s anger collapsed into pain.

“Who?”

“Carlo.”

Dante stepped closer.

“You went with him willingly.”

Evelyn looked at him.

“At first.”

“Why?”

“To keep him away from Lena.”

“What did he want?”

“The real ledger.”

Lena held up the red book.

Evelyn’s face drained.

“You found it.”

“Yes.”

“Then we have hours.”

“Until what?”

“Your birthday.”

Lena laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone knows.”

Evelyn sat.

For the next hour, she told them everything.

After the car accident, Silvio had hidden her.

But Carlo discovered she survived.

He threatened Lena.

Evelyn agreed to disappear permanently if Carlo left her daughter untouched.

For years, he kept that promise.

Then Silvio died.

Carlo gained control over more of the Moretti network.

He began searching again.

Why now?

Because the trust would transfer to Lena on her thirty-second birthday.

Carlo needed the red ledger destroyed before that happened.

“And Adrian?” Dante asked.

Evelyn looked ashamed.

“Carlo planned the marriage.”

Lena folded her arms.

“To force control.”

“Yes.”

“Did you agree to that too?”

“No.”

Evelyn reached for her.

Lena stepped back.

“No more protecting me with lies.”

“I know.”

“No more deciding what I can handle.”

“I know.”

“No more disappearing.”

Evelyn cried silently.

“I know.”

Dante watched them.

Lena noticed.

He seemed almost envious.

His own mother could not walk through any door.

The thought softened something in her.

But only briefly.

“Why the gun?” Dante asked.

Evelyn looked toward him.

“Because Carlo thinks I came here to steal the ledger.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then why does he think that?”

“Because I told him I would.”

Silence.

Lena stared.

“You used yourself as bait.”

“Yes.”

“You came here knowing he’d follow.”

“Yes.”

Dante swore.

He ordered the building locked down.

Too late.

The first shot struck a side window.

Glass exploded.

Dante pulled Lena and Evelyn behind a stone wall.

Security moved instantly.

No chaos.

No screaming.

Just controlled commands.

Someone had entered through the neighboring brownstone.

A tunnel between basements had been opened.

Carlo had planned this.

Lena gripped her mother’s hand.

For the first time in eleven years.

Evelyn squeezed back.

Dante led them through the library toward a secure room.

Then all the lights died.

Lena almost laughed.

“Again?”

Dante did not.

A man stepped from the darkness.

Adrian.

Brown hair.

Polite face.

The same man who once asked about wedding cakes.

He held no visible weapon.

“Lena.”

Dante moved in front of her.

Adrian raised his hands.

“I’m not here to hurt anyone.”

“Then leave.”

“I can’t.”

“You can.”

Adrian looked at Lena.

“My father will kill Evelyn if you don’t sign.”

Lena froze.

Evelyn grabbed her arm.

“Don’t.”

Adrian continued.

“He’ll kill Maya too.”

Lena’s stomach twisted.

“She’s safe.”

Adrian looked at Dante.

“Are you sure?”

Dante’s phone buzzed.

A photo.

Maya tied to a chair.

Current timestamp.

Dante’s face hardened.

His security team had recovered the wrong location.

Carlo had anticipated them.

Adrian held out a folder.

Marriage license.

Transfer documents.

Voting proxy.

Everything prepared.

Lena stared.

“If I sign, he lets them go?”

“Yes.”

Evelyn shook her head.

“He won’t.”

Adrian looked ashamed.

“No.”

Lena’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“He won’t.”

“Then why are you here?”

“To tell you what he really plans.”

Adrian reached into his coat.

Dante’s hand went toward his weapon.

Adrian slowly removed a flash drive.

“My father intends to kill everyone after the transfer.”

Dante took it.

“Why help us?”

Adrian’s expression turned hollow.

“Because he killed my mother too.”

Silence.

Adrian had spent years pretending loyalty.

He had copied Carlo’s financial files.

The flash drive held records linking Carlo to murders, extortion, bribery, and the fire at Marianne’s Bakery.

Together with the red ledger, it was enough.

“Where is Carlo?” Dante asked.

Adrian gave an address.

Old warehouse district.

“Where’s Maya?”

“Same place.”

Dante looked at Lena.

“No.”

She had not said anything.

“You are not coming.”

“Yes, I am.”

“No.”

“Carlo wants me. That makes me useful.”

“It makes you a target.”

“I’ve been a target since birth.”

Evelyn grabbed Lena’s hand.

“Please.”

Lena looked at her.

“For eleven years, you protected me by making choices for me.”

Evelyn’s face crumpled.

“I’m done letting other people decide what I’m allowed to face.”

Dante stared at her.

Then nodded once.

They devised a plan.

Not a rescue by force.

A transfer.

Lena would go in with the red ledger.

Carlo believed she was desperate to save Maya.

Dante’s team would move once hostages were confirmed.

Police contacts Adrian trusted would wait outside.

Federal agents had been quietly alerted using the evidence from the flash drive.

For the first time, Carlo’s network would not know who had turned against him.

At 11:38 p.m., Lena entered the warehouse.

Alone.

The red ledger in her hands.

Carlo stood beneath a hanging light.

Sixty-two.

Silver hair.

Elegant coat.

He smiled when he saw her.

“You look like Evelyn.”

“I hear that a lot tonight.”

Maya sat behind him.

Alive.

Evelyn was not there.

Lena stopped.

“Where is my mother?”

Carlo smiled.

“Safe.”

“Show me.”

“First the ledger.”

“First my mother.”

Carlo laughed softly.

“You negotiate like a Moretti.”

“I’m a Hart.”

“Not after midnight.”

He gestured.

Adrian stepped from the shadows.

His face was blank.

Lena pretended not to know he had betrayed his father.

Carlo placed the documents on a table.

“Sign.”

“No.”

“Then Maya dies.”

Maya shook her head violently.

Lena looked at the clock.

11:54.

Six minutes.

“Why marriage?”

Carlo smiled.

“Legal convenience.”

“You’re afraid of a baker.”

“I’m afraid of signatures.”

“Good.”

His smile vanished.

Lena put the red ledger on the table.

“Release Maya.”

Carlo opened it.

His expression changed.

He flipped pages.

Then looked at Lena.

“This is real.”

“Yes.”

He gestured.

A guard untied Maya.

She stumbled toward Lena.

Halfway across the floor, every warehouse door slammed shut.

Carlo smiled again.

“You didn’t think I’d let either of you leave?”

Lena looked toward Adrian.

He remained still.

Too still.

Something was wrong.

Carlo checked his watch.

11:58.

“Two minutes.”

Lena pushed the paperwork away.

“No.”

Carlo sighed.

Then raised a phone.

On the screen was a live video.

Evelyn.

Tied to a chair somewhere dark.

Lena stopped breathing.

Carlo pressed one finger to the screen.

“Sign.”

The clock changed.

11:59.

May you like

Lena picked up the pen.

And behind Carlo, Adrian quietly reached for the warehouse alarm.
