Chapter 2 - SHADOWS IN THE BOARDROOM

Six months had passed since the dramatic reading of Marcus Vance’s will, but the war inside the Vance estate was only getting hotter.

Eleanor wore a cheap, coarse maid's uniform, her once-immaculate French manicure ruined by hours of scrubbing floors under the watchful eye of the estate’s strict head housekeeper. Every day was a living nightmare for her. She had to dust the very chandeliers she once owned, clean the marble steps she used to glide down in designer gowns, and serve breakfast to Lily, the seven-year-old girl she despised with every fiber of her being.

Yet, behind her bitter smile lay a sinister plot. Eleanor had not surrendered; she had simply moved her battleground into the shadows.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when Mr. Harrison, the ruthless Chief Financial Officer of Vance Global Tech, arrived at the estate under the guise of delivering quarterly report documents to Arthur Montgomery. While Arthur was briefly pulled away to address a security system update, Harrison slipped quietly into the secondary parlor where Eleanor was aggressively vacuuming a rug.

"Is everything ready?" Eleanor whispered hissed, shutting off the vacuum instantly and looking around the hallway.

Harrison pulled a small, encrypted flash drive from his suit jacket. "The board is getting restless, Eleanor. Lily's trust holds fifty-one percent of the voting power. Without an active executive signature, our proposed ten-billion-dollar AI defense merger with Titan Corp is stalled. The shareholders are losing millions every week."

"I don't care about the shareholders!" Eleanor snapped in a low, furious tone. "I care about control! Did you find a way to invalidate the trust?"

"Better," Harrison sneered, leaning in close. "The trust agreement states that if the designated heir is proven mentally or physically incapable of managing their affairs due to psychological trauma, legal guardianship automatically reverts to the nearest surviving adult relative. Namely... you."

Eleanor’s eyes lit up with predatory delight. "Psychological trauma... You mean if we prove the kid is unstable?"

"Precisely," Harrison said with a cold nod. "I have hired Dr. Julian Vance—a child psychiatrist who happens to owe me three million dollars in gambling debts. He will conduct a routine evaluation of Lily tomorrow morning. He will write a comprehensive report stating she suffers from severe, incurable emotional psychosis brought on by her mother's death. Once that report hits the judge's desk, the trust breaks, you become her legal guardian, and we sign the Titan Corp deal by Friday."

What neither of them realized was that Lily was sitting quietly inside the hollow oak reading nook built into the parlor wall, holding her teddy bear. The little girl didn't understand words like 'psychosis' or 'trust agreement,' but she understood the cold, terrifying tone of Eleanor’s voice. She pressed her back against the wood, holding her breath, tears silent in her eyes.

The next morning, the grand library was prepared for Dr. Julian’s arrival. The room was heavy with the smell of old paper and polished mahogany. Dr. Julian, a tall man with sharp feature and cold, calculating eyes behind gold-rimmed glasses, sat across a small round table from Lily.

Eleanor stood near the doorway, arms crossed, a cruel grin playing on her lips. Arthur Montgomery sat nearby, his laptop open, watching the proceedings with intense scrutiny.

"Now, Lily," Dr. Julian began, his voice fake and sickly sweet as he set a stack of inkblot cards on the table. "I want you to tell me what you see in these pictures. There are no wrong answers, sweetie."

He held up a dark, symmetrical inkblot shape.

Lily looked at it quietly. "It looks like two butterflies flying together."

Dr. Julian made a heavy, exaggerated sigh, scribbling rapidly on his notepad. "Fascinating... clear signs of reality detachment and delusional idealization."

Arthur frowned deeply, looking up from his laptop. "Doctor, it's a standard inkblot. A butterfly is the most common answer in child psychology."

"Please do not interrupt my medical diagnostic procedure, Mr. Montgomery," Dr. Julian snapped dismissively. He pulled out another card, this one jagged and dark. "What about this one, Lily?"

Lily hesitated, looking at Eleanor, who was glaring at her from the back of the room with a look of pure menace. "It... it looks like a scary storm."

"Ah," Dr. Julian scribbled furiously again. "Severe anxiety, persecution paranoia, latent aggression. Highly unstable." He set his pen down, looking at Arthur with a fake expression of deep concern. "I am sorry, Mr. Montgomery, but as a licensed professional, I must immediately file a petition with the family court. This child is severely traumatized and mentally unfit to handle the burden of her current living situation. She requires immediate institutional placement, and legal custody must be transferred to her aunt Eleanor for her own safety."

Eleanor took a triumphant step forward. "You heard the doctor! Pack her bags, Arthur! She belongs in a psychiatric facility!"

"Wait!" Lily’s small voice rang out, clear and firm.

Everyone stopped. Lily stood up from her chair, her tiny hands resting flat on the table. She didn't look scared anymore; she looked straight into Dr. Julian’s eyes with a remarkable, quiet dignity that reminded Arthur instantly of old Marcus Vance.

"Dr. Julian," Lily said softly, reaching into her teddy bear’s back zipper—the bear her mother had sewn for her before she passed away. "My mommy told me that people who lie always leave footprints. Just like you did."

From inside the teddy bear, Lily pulled out a small, glowing digital recording device—a tiny spy microphone that Marcus had hidden inside the bear years ago to protect his household. She pressed play.

Click.

The quiet audio recording played sharply through the library speakers:

"The board is getting restless, Eleanor... I have hired Dr. Julian Vance... He will write a comprehensive report stating she suffers from severe emotional psychosis... Once that report hits the judge's desk, the trust breaks, you become her legal guardian, and we sign the Titan Corp deal..."

The room plunged into dead silence.

Dr. Julian’s face drained of all color. He stumbled backward, knocking his chair over with a loud crash. Eleanor stood frozen, her eyes wide with terror as she realized what had just happened.

Arthur Montgomery slowly closed his laptop, a dark, victorious smile spreading across his face. He pulled out his cell phone, dialing a three-digit number.

"Yes, police department? I would like to report an ongoing conspiracy to commit massive corporate fraud, child endangerment, and medical forgery at the Vance Estate. Please send officers immediately."

"No! Wait!" Eleanor screamed, rushing toward Lily in a desperate, frantic panic. "Give me that device, you little brat!"

Before Eleanor could reach the child, Arthur stepped firmly into her path, grabbing her wrist in a grip of steel. "It's over, Eleanor. You just played your final hand... and you lost everything."
