Chapter 1 - THE WILL OF ICE AND IRON

"Look at that filthy little leech, standing there pretending she actually cared about Uncle Marcus," Eleanor hissed, her voice dripping with poison as the camera zoomed in on seven-year-old Lily, who stood alone in the cold drizzle outside the mega-mansion.

Lily wore oversized, faded hand-me-downs, clutching a battered velvet teddy bear to her chest, her small knees trembling against the chill. Eleanor, dripped in head-to-toe designer black silk and diamonds, didn't care that the paparazzi lenses were clicking like a swarm of locusts. She stepped forward, her expensive high heels clicking sharply on the wet marble steps, and pointed an icy, manicured finger straight at the little girl's face.

"You don't belong here, kid. Your dead mother was a disgraced maid, and Marcus was out of his mind when he brought you into this family. You think you're getting a single cent of the Vance tech empire? Over my dead body. Security! Throw this trash off the estate grounds before she stains the pavement!"

The crowd of shareholders, high-society vultures, and news reporters gasped, but nobody moved to stop her. Eleanor’s husband, Richard Vance, smiled smugly from the top step, swirling a glass of twenty-year-old scotch, fully expecting to inherit the five-billion-dollar empire today. The internet was already exploding—millions watching the livestream were screaming in the comments, divided between calling Eleanor a monster and arguing that a maid’s daughter had no right to a fortune.

As two burly guards grabbed Lily by her fragile shoulders, the heavy mahogany doors of the Vance estate swung open. Out stepped Arthur Montgomery, the most feared probate attorney in the state, carrying a heavy steel briefcase.

"Unhand her immediately," Arthur’s voice boomed, cutting through the murmurs like a razor blade. "Unless you want every single person on this property arrested for assault against the sole primary heir of the Vance Estate."

Silence fell over the crowd like a heavy blanket. Eleanor’s cruel smirk froze into a mask of pure disbelief. "What ridiculous joke is this, Arthur? Marcus was incapacitated for six months! Richard and I are his only blood relatives!"

"Your uncle was many things, Eleanor, but stupid was not one of them," Arthur replied coolly, stepping down the stairs to place a protective hand on Lily’s small shoulder. "Thirty minutes before his heart gave out, Marcus executed a final, ironclad codicil to his will. And he left a personal video recording. We will view it inside. Now."

The grand ballroom of the Vance estate was illuminated by massive crystal chandeliers, reflecting off polished oak floors. Surrounded by fifty of the country's wealthiest executives, Eleanor stood with her arms crossed, her eyes burning with hatred as Arthur set up a high-definition holographic display in the center of the room.

The screen flickered to life. Marcus Vance appeared—frail, sunken-eyed, yet holding an undeniable spark of sharp intelligence in his gaze. He sat in his hospital bed, breathing heavily through an oxygen tube.

"If you are watching this," Marcus’s raspy voice echoed through the vast hall, "it means my greedy niece Eleanor and her weak-willed husband have already tried to throw my little Lily onto the street."

Eleanor gasped, her face flushing crimson as several executives shifted uncomfortably, glancing toward her.

"Let me be brutally clear," Marcus continued, his eyes locking onto the camera lens with terrifying intensity. "Eleanor, you haven't visited me once in three years unless you were asking for a check. Richard, you've been secretly siphoning company assets into offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands—yes, I have the forensic audit right here on my desk. You vultures thought I was blind."

"This is absurd! This video is an AI fake!" Richard shouted, his face turning pale as sweat broke out on his forehead.

"Shut up, Richard!" Arthur snapped without looking away from the screen. "Let the dead man speak."

"The only person who showed me genuine human warmth in my final days," Marcus said, his voice softening as he looked off-camera toward a memory, "was Lily. The daughter of Sarah, the woman who kept this household running with dignity while you all bled me dry. Lily brought me tea. She read me children's stories when my eyes failed. She held my hand when the pain was unbearable. She gave me a reason to smile when the world only saw me as a wallet."

Marcus leaned closer to the camera, his stern look returning. "Therefore, I leave ninety percent of my liquid assets, my controlling voting shares in Vance Global Tech, and this estate to Lily. But... there is a condition."

A collective sharp intake of breath filled the ballroom. Eleanor perked up, a desperate glimmer of hope igniting in her eyes.

"To ensure Lily is protected and raised with the strength to lead this empire," Marcus declared, "she will not receive a single dime directly until her eighteenth birthday. In the meantime, the estate and voting rights will be managed by a neutral third-party trust. Furthermore, Eleanor and Richard are hereby cut off completely. Not one dollar. However..."

Marcus paused, a cold, calculating smile touching his lips. "...if Eleanor and Richard wish to remain living in the guest house and receive a modest living allowance of five thousand dollars a month—a fraction of what they spend on shoes—they must act as the estate's domestic staff. Under the full supervision of Attorney Montgomery and Lily’s appointed legal guardian."

"WHAT?!" Eleanor shrieked, her voice cracking in pure horror. "You want ME to be a servant to a street rat?!"

"If they refuse," Marcus’s recording concluded calmly, "all remaining funds default to an international children's orphan charity, and Eleanor and Richard will be evicted immediately with zero financial support. The choice is yours. Choose wisely, dear family."

The holographic display faded to black. The ballroom was completely silent save for the rapid, panicked breathing of Eleanor and Richard.

Lily looked up at Arthur, her wide brown eyes filled with innocence and confusion. "Mr. Arthur... does this mean I don't have to sleep in the shed anymore?"

Arthur bent down on one knee, gently patting the little girl's head, his voice warm and soft. "No, sweet child. You will never sleep in the cold again. This entire castle belongs to you."

Eleanor stepped forward, her eyes wide with unhinged rage, her fingers twitching at her sides. "This isn't over, Arthur! She's a child! She can't defend herself! I will burn this entire legal document to the ground, and I will destroy anyone who gets in my way!"

May you like

Arthur stood up straight, towering over Eleanor with an expression of cold disdain. "You are welcome to try, Eleanor. But remember: the world is watching you now. Every camera, every news outlet, every shareholder. Touch one hair on this girl's head, and you won't just lose your allowance—you will spend the rest of your life in a federal prison."

As Eleanor stared in sheer, helpless fury, little Lily held her teddy bear tighter, looking around the grand room that was now hers, blissfully unaware of the dark storm that was about to unleash.
