Chapter 3 - The Secret They Buried

My mother answered on the fourth ring.
I almost didn't pick up.
For a few seconds, I stared at her name glowing on my phone screen.
Because suddenly, I wasn't just afraid of what Daniel and Vanessa had done.
I was afraid of what my own family might have known.
I pressed accept.
"Clare?"
Her voice sounded different.
Not surprised.
Not confused.
Worried.
"Mom," I said quietly.
There was a pause.
A long one.
The kind of silence that tells you someone is deciding how much truth they can survive telling.
"Where are you?" she asked.
I looked around the guest room.
At the walls.
At the boxes.
At the life I thought I understood.
"I'm home."
Another pause.
Then she whispered.
"Did you see it?"
My stomach dropped.
I sat down slowly on the edge of the bed.
"See what?"
I already knew.
But I needed her to say it.
"Clare..."
Her voice cracked.
"Who sent you that picture?"
My entire body went still.
I looked at the photograph still open on my phone.
Daniel.
Vanessa.
And the person standing beside them.
My mother.
Five years earlier.
Before my wedding.
Before I knew anything.
"Mom," I said.
My voice was barely above a whisper.
"Why are you in that picture?"
Silence.
The longest silence I had ever heard.
Then she said the one thing I never expected.
"Because I tried to stop them."
I closed my eyes.
Tried.
That word hurt.
Because it meant she knew.
She knew something.
Something I had spent years believing was impossible.
"Stop who?"
My mother breathed heavily.
"Daniel and Vanessa."
The room felt smaller.
"How long have you known?"
"I didn't know everything."
"But you knew something."
She didn't answer.
And that was my answer.
I stood up.
My anger finally broke through the shock.
"How could you?"
"Clare, listen to me."
"No."
My voice shook.
"No, you listen to me. You watched me marry him. You watched me build a life with him. You watched me invite that woman into every important moment of my life."
"I was trying to protect you."
I laughed.
But there was no humor in it.
"Protect me?"
I looked at the recording on my phone.
The evidence of my husband's betrayal.
"The two people I trusted most were planning to destroy me, and you knew something."
"I knew they were dangerous."
"Then why didn't you tell me?"
My mother went quiet.
Then she said something that made my blood run cold.
"Because they had already prepared for me to tell you."
I stopped.
"What does that mean?"
"Clare, you need to leave that condo."
I frowned.
"What?"
"Do not stay there."
The urgency in her voice frightened me.
"Mom, what are you talking about?"
"I mean exactly what I said. Take your important documents and leave."
I looked toward the bedroom.
The door was still closed.
Daniel was somewhere on the other side.
My husband.
The man who had been sleeping beside me while making plans behind my back.
"What did they do?"
My mother took a shaky breath.
"I don't know how much Daniel told Vanessa. I don't know how much Vanessa told the others."
"The others?"
Another silence.
Then I heard her whisper.
"There were more people involved."
My hand tightened around the phone.
"Who?"
"Clare..."
"Who?"
She didn't answer.
Instead, she asked:
"Do you still have your grandmother's original documents?"
I froze.
The question made no sense.
"Why?"
"Answer me."
"Yes."
"Where?"
I looked toward my closet.
"In my office."
"No."
Her voice became sharper.
"Do not go near your office."
I felt a chill move through me.
"Why?"
"Because if they were looking for the property documents, that's where they would start."
I stared at my phone.
The condo.
The fake signatures.
The property agreement.
Everything connected.
Daniel wasn't trying to destroy my marriage.
He was trying to take my home.
But why?
Why would my husband need my condo?
The question kept repeating in my mind.
Then I remembered something.
A conversation from months earlier.
Daniel had asked casually:
"What would happen if you ever sold this place?"
I had laughed.
"Why would I sell it?"
He smiled.
"I don't know. Just wondering."
At the time, I thought it was curiosity.
Now I realized it was preparation.
"Mom," I said.
"What exactly did Daniel want?"
She didn't answer immediately.
When she finally spoke, her voice was filled with regret.
"Your condo isn't just valuable because of the location."
I waited.
"It's valuable because of what your grandmother left hidden in the ownership records."
My heart started racing.
"What?"
"I can't explain over the phone."
"Mom."
"Clare, someone may be listening."
I looked at my phone.
The call.
The messages.
The recording.
Everything suddenly felt connected.
"Who?"
My mother lowered her voice.
"I don't know."
Then the call ended.
Not disconnected.
Ended.
She hung up.
I stared at the screen.
My first instinct was to call back.
But I stopped.
Because for the first time that night, I understood something.
My mother wasn't afraid of Daniel.
She was afraid of someone else.
I quickly transferred every file from my phone to my laptop.
The recording.
The documents.
The messages.
Then I opened the photograph again.
I zoomed in.
I wanted to know when it was taken.
Where.
Why.
The image quality was poor, but the background was clear enough.
A restaurant.
A private room.
Daniel was younger.
Vanessa looked different.
And my mother was sitting across from them.
But there was something else.
A folder on the table.
A logo printed on the corner.
I recognized it.
My father's old company.
The company that had disappeared after his death.
The company everyone told me had simply failed.
I leaned closer.
That wasn't possible.
My father had spent his entire life building that business.
Then, after he died, everything vanished.
The money.
The records.
The employees.
Everything.
And now that same company logo was sitting in front of Daniel and Vanessa five years ago.
Before they betrayed me.
Before I knew anything.
My phone buzzed.
I jumped.
Another unknown number.
This time there was no text.
Just an incoming call.
I stared at the screen.
I didn't answer.
The call stopped.
Then a voicemail appeared.
I hesitated.
Then pressed play.
A man's voice filled the room.
"Clare, if you're listening to this, it means you finally found the truth."
I froze.
I didn't recognize the voice.
"You need to understand something."
A pause.
"Daniel wasn't the person who started this."
My breathing slowed.
"Your husband was only following instructions."
I stood completely still.
The voice continued.
"The person who planned everything has been close to you for years."
My fingers went cold.
The message ended.
But before it disconnected, the man whispered one final sentence.
"The person you trust most is the one who betrayed you first."
I looked at the bedroom door.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Because suddenly, I wasn't thinking about Daniel.
I wasn't thinking about Vanessa.
I was thinking about the photograph.
And the person standing beside them.
The person I had never suspected.
My hand reached for the doorknob.
May you like
Then I heard movement on the other side.
Someone was standing there.
