Chapter 2 - The Voice Behind the Door

The recording stopped at 3:41 in the morning.

I sat alone in the guest room, staring at the frozen screen of my phone.

For nearly two hours, I had watched my entire marriage collapse frame by frame.

Every glance.

Every hesitation.

Every lie.

I had expected pain.

I had expected anger.

I had expected tears.

What I didn't expect was the silence.

The strange, heavy silence that came after you finally saw the truth.

Because once a person revealed who they really were, there was nothing left to argue about.

I pressed play again.

The video showed Daniel and Vanessa sitting on my bed.

My bed.

The place where I had fallen asleep beside my husband for seven years.

The place where I had whispered my fears.

The place where I had believed I was safe.

But this time, I wasn't watching them.

I was listening.

I dragged the timeline back thirty seconds.

The moment right before I opened the door.

The moment I heard a third voice.

A man's voice.

Quiet.

Almost impossible to hear.

I increased the volume.

The sound filled the small guest room.

Daniel's voice came first.

"Are you sure this is going to work?"

My fingers tightened around the phone.

Work?

I continued listening.

Vanessa answered.

"Clare won't fight back. You know that."

A cold feeling moved through my body.

They weren't talking about hiding.

They weren't talking about apologizing.

They were talking about me.

Daniel sighed.

"She trusts you more than anyone."

Vanessa laughed softly.

"Exactly."

I paused the recording.

My chest felt tight.

For years, I had defended Vanessa.

When other people told me she was too dependent on me, I ignored them.

When Daniel once joked that Vanessa practically lived in our lives, I laughed.

I thought he was teasing.

I thought their friendship was harmless.

I thought I was lucky to have two people who cared about me.

I had never considered that the two people closest to me could become the two people most capable of hurting me.

I pressed play again.

Then I heard the voice.

The third voice.

A man's voice.

"Once she signs, it's finished."

I froze.

My thumb hovered over the screen.

Once she signs.

What did that mean?

I replayed the sentence.

Again.

And again.

My heart started beating faster.

This wasn't only about an affair.

There was something else.

Something bigger.

I stood up slowly.

My legs felt weak, but my mind had never been clearer.

I needed answers.

Not from Daniel.

Not from Vanessa.

Not yet.

Because people who knew they were caught usually told you what they wanted you to hear.

But recordings told the truth.

I grabbed my laptop from my bag and walked quietly into the hallway.

The condo was dark.

Daniel and Vanessa were still in our bedroom.

Or at least I assumed they were.

I stopped outside the door.

For a moment, I thought about opening it.

I thought about confronting them.

Demanding answers.

Making them feel the same pain I felt.

But I didn't.

Anger was what they expected.

A broken wife.

A screaming wife.

A woman who would make a scene and destroy her own credibility.

I knew Daniel.

I knew how he operated.

He always appeared calm.

Reasonable.

The kind of man people believed.

If I accused him without proof, he would turn the story around.

He would become the victim.

And I would become the unstable wife.

No.

I wasn't going to give them that opportunity.

I went back to the guest room.

Then I opened my laptop.

The first thing I searched was Daniel's name.

Nothing unusual.

His company profile.

A few interviews.

Photos from charity events.

The perfect image.

Successful.

Reliable.

Trustworthy.

I almost laughed.

Then I searched Vanessa.

Again.

Nothing.

But when I combined their names together, something appeared.

A company registration.

A small consulting business.

Created six months earlier.

The name wasn't familiar.

But the address was.

My address.

I stared at the screen.

No.

That wasn't possible.

I clicked the document.

My hands became cold.

The company had been registered using information from our condo.

Our condo.

The one I had purchased before I married Daniel.

The one my grandmother left me money to buy.

The one that had always been mine.

I kept scrolling.

Then I saw it.

A document attachment.

A property agreement.

My name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

I leaned closer to the screen.

There were copies of paperwork I had never seen.

Financial documents.

Authorization forms.

A transfer agreement.

My stomach dropped.

Daniel wasn't just cheating.

He was trying to take something from me.

I quickly saved everything.

Screenshots.

Files.

Dates.

Everything.

Then my phone buzzed.

I almost dropped it.

A message.

From Daniel.

Where are you?

I stared at the words.

A few seconds later, another message arrived.

Can we talk?

Then another.

Please don't do anything before we explain.

Before we explain.

The phrase made me smile.

Because now I understood.

They weren't worried about hurting me.

They were worried about controlling the damage.

I didn't answer.

Instead, I opened the recording again.

I wanted more.

I needed more.

I moved through the video carefully.

Then I found another conversation.

One that happened before I entered.

Vanessa's voice was clearer.

"She'll sign when she thinks she's saving the marriage."

Daniel responded.

"What if she doesn't?"

Vanessa paused.

Then she said something that made my entire body go still.

"Then we use the other option."

I stopped breathing for a second.

The other option.

What other option?

I looked toward the bedroom door.

The apartment suddenly felt different.

Not like a home.

Like a place where someone had been preparing something.

Something against me.

My phone buzzed again.

This time it wasn't Daniel.

It was an unknown number.

I stared at it.

Then I opened the message.

There was only one sentence.

You finally saw what they were doing.

My fingers went numb.

A second message appeared.

But you still don't know why they chose you.

I stared at the screen.

Who was this?

How did they know?

Before I could reply, another message arrived.

This one had an attachment.

A photograph.

I opened it.

And my entire world shifted.

It was a picture of Daniel and Vanessa.

Not from tonight.

Not from weeks ago.

From years earlier.

Before my wedding.

Before I ever introduced them.

The timestamp showed the date.

Five years before.

And standing beside them in the photograph was someone I recognized immediately.

Someone I trusted.

Someone who had been helping Daniel all along.

I zoomed in on the image.

Then my phone rang.

May you like

The caller ID appeared.

It was my mother.
