Chapter 7 - The Choice Between Revenge and Forgiveness

The Mercer family greenhouse had been abandoned for almost three years.
Most people who visited the estate never noticed it.
They noticed the mansion.
The expensive marble floors.
The antique paintings.
The grand staircase where every family photograph had been taken.
But the greenhouse was different.
It was hidden behind the eastern garden, surrounded by tall trees and overgrown plants. The glass ceiling was covered with dust. The metal frame had begun to rust. The path leading to it was barely visible beneath fallen leaves.
It was the kind of place people forgot existed.
And that was exactly why Adrian Mercer knew his father had chosen it.
Somewhere inside that forgotten building was the truth that had almost gotten him killed.
The truth that had destroyed Emily Carter’s life.
The truth that had turned his own family into enemies.
Adrian stood outside the greenhouse with Lieutenant Dana Cho beside him.
Behind them, Ivy sat inside a police vehicle, wrapped in a warm jacket someone had given her.
She watched him through the window.
Not like a child watching an adult.
Like someone waiting to see whether he would keep his promise.
Adrian noticed.
And it bothered him.
Because for the first time in years, someone was depending on him for something that money could not fix.
Trust.
“Are you sure you want to do this now?” Dana asked.
Adrian looked at the old greenhouse.
“No.”
Dana raised an eyebrow.
“No?”
“I’m not sure about anything anymore.”
That answer surprised her.
Because Adrian Mercer was known as a man who always had a plan.
A man who walked into meetings knowing exactly what he wanted.
A man who rarely admitted uncertainty.
But the last twenty-four hours had destroyed every assumption he had.
His security chief betrayed.
His brother suspected.
His father’s secrets uncovered.
A girl who should have been forgotten becoming the person who saved him.
“I spent years believing I knew my family,” Adrian said quietly.
Dana looked at him.
“And now?”
“Now I realize I only knew the version they wanted me to see.”
They entered the greenhouse.
The door opened with a painful metallic sound.
Inside, the air smelled like old wood and rain.
Plants that had once been carefully maintained had grown wild. Broken flower pots rested along the walls. Dust covered the tables where Adrian remembered his father spending hours reading.
As a child, Adrian had hated this place.
He thought it was boring.
His father would disappear here for hours.
No meetings.
No business calls.
Just silence.
Now Adrian wondered if his father had not been hiding from the world.
Maybe he had been hiding something from it.
“Where would he keep something important?” Dana asked.
Adrian walked slowly through the room.
“My father believed people looked where they expected to find value.”
“What does that mean?”
“He never hid expensive things in expensive places.”
Dana watched him.
“He liked psychology.”
“He liked understanding people.”
Adrian touched an old wooden table.
“He believed greed made people predictable.”
Then he stopped.
There was a small crack underneath the table.
Something was wrong.
Adrian crouched down.
Behind the wooden panel was a hidden compartment.
Dana immediately called another officer.
Inside was a small metal box.
No lock.
No label.
Just a simple container.
Adrian opened it.
Inside were several documents.
Financial records.
Bank transfers.
Company accounts.
And one folder with a name written across the front.
Richard Vale.
Adrian felt his entire body go still.
The man Grant had named.
The man his father trusted.
The man nobody knew about.
Dana opened the folder carefully.
“This is the evidence?”
Adrian looked through the pages.
His expression changed.
Because the documents revealed something far bigger than theft.
Richard Vale had been moving company funds for years.
Millions of dollars.
Hidden accounts.
Fake investments.
Shell companies.
But the final document was the one that mattered most.
A contract.
Signed by Richard Vale.
And another signature.
Julian Mercer.
Adrian stared at the paper.
For a moment, anger returned.
His brother.
Again.
But then he noticed something.
The date.
The contract had been signed after the first financial transfers.
After Richard had already started stealing.
Adrian looked closer.
Julian’s signature appeared forced.
Like someone had pressured him.
“Something is wrong,” Adrian whispered.
Dana looked at him.
“You think Julian was involved?”
“I think he was used.”
“That’s a big difference.”
“Yes.”
Adrian remembered his brother’s words.
Father knew this family had become dangerous.
At the time, Adrian thought Julian was defending himself.
Now he wondered if Julian had been trying to warn him.
A sound came from outside.
Adrian immediately turned.
A shadow moved behind the greenhouse glass.
Dana reached for her weapon.
“Stay behind me.”
The door opened.
Julian Mercer stepped inside.
Adrian froze.
“Julian.”
His brother looked exhausted.
For the first time since the attack, the perfect suit and controlled expression were gone.
He looked like someone who had not slept.
Someone carrying a burden.
“I knew you would find it here.”
Dana moved between them.
“Don’t move.”
Julian stopped.
“I’m not here to fight.”
Adrian looked at him.
“Then why are you here?”
Julian stared at the documents.
“Because Richard knows you found them.”
The name changed everything.
“You know Richard Vale?”
Julian laughed quietly.
“You finally learned his name.”
Adrian’s anger returned.
“How long?”
“How long what?”
“How long have you known?”
Julian looked away.
“Since I was twenty-five.”
Dana watched carefully.
“Explain.”
Julian took a breath.
“Richard was Father’s closest advisor. He was the man who always knew what was happening before anyone else.”
“And you worked with him.”
“Yes.”
The answer came too quickly.
Adrian stepped forward.
“Why?”
Julian looked at him.
“Because I was angry.”
Silence.
“I spent my whole life feeling like I was second.”
His voice cracked slightly.
“Second son. Second choice. Second place.”
Adrian said nothing.
“Richard knew that.”
Julian continued.
“He told me Father would never respect me. He told me the only way to prove myself was to take control.”
“And you believed him.”
“Yes.”
The honesty surprised Adrian.
“I signed things.”
Julian looked at the floor.
“I moved money.”
Dana’s expression hardened.
“But?”
Julian looked up.
“But I didn’t know he was planning to destroy Father.”
Adrian stared.
“When did you find out?”
“When Father confronted him.”
The greenhouse became silent.
Julian continued.
“Father told me he knew everything.”
“What happened?”
“Richard threatened him.”
Adrian felt cold.
“What kind of threat?”
Julian swallowed.
“He said if Father exposed him, he would destroy the family.”
Dana asked:
“Did your father tell you about Emily Carter?”
Julian looked surprised.
“No.”
Adrian watched him carefully.
“Why?”
“Because Father didn’t trust me.”
The words carried more pain than anger.
Adrian understood.
His father had protected the truth.
But he had also pushed Julian further away.
“What happened the night Father died?” Adrian asked.
Julian closed his eyes.
“I wasn’t there.”
“Where were you?”
“Trying to find proof against Richard.”
Adrian studied him.
“And tonight?”
Julian looked at the ground.
“Richard contacted me.”
“What did he want?”
“He wanted me to help him get the trust documents.”
“And you refused.”
“Yes.”
Adrian was quiet.
Then asked:
“Why didn’t you come to me?”
Julian looked at him.
“Because I thought you would hate me.”
The answer hit harder than Adrian expected.
Because maybe Julian was right.
Maybe he would have.
Before tonight, Adrian would have seen betrayal and stopped looking deeper.
But Ivy had changed something.
She had forced him to see people differently.
Not as problems.
Not as enemies.
As people.
Adrian looked at his brother.
“You made mistakes.”
Julian nodded.
“I know.”
“You hurt people.”
“I know.”
“But Richard used you.”
Julian looked surprised.
Adrian continued.
“That doesn’t erase what you did.”
“No.”
“But it means you still have a choice.”
For a moment, neither brother spoke.
Then Julian quietly said:
“Father would have hated seeing us like this.”
Adrian looked away.
Because that was the one thing they both knew was true.
Their father wanted them to protect each other.
Not destroy each other.
A phone suddenly rang.
Dana answered.
Her expression changed.
“What happened?”
She listened.
Then looked at Adrian.
“We have a problem.”
Adrian immediately became alert.
“What?”
“Richard Vale disappeared.”
“When?”
“Thirty minutes ago.”
Dana lowered the phone.
“And there’s something else.”
“What?”
She looked toward Ivy’s direction.
“Someone broke into the police vehicle.”
Adrian’s heart stopped.
“Ivy?”
Dana nodded.
“She’s gone.”
The world seemed to freeze.
Adrian looked outside.
The rain had started falling harder.
And for the second time in one night, the person who knew the truth had vanished.
But this time, Adrian knew exactly who was responsible.
Richard Vale.
The man who had spent years hiding in the shadows.
The man who had stolen from his family.
The man who now had the one person capable of exposing him.
An eleven-year-old girl named Ivy.
Adrian walked out of the greenhouse.
His fear was gone.
His anger was gone.
Only determination remained.
Because this was no longer about the Mercer empire.
No longer about revenge.
No longer about proving who was right.
May you like
It was about protecting the person who had saved him first.
And this time, Adrian Mercer was coming for the enemy.
