Chapter 5 - The Brother Who Wanted the Empire

Grant Kessler was found twenty yards away from the western edge of the Mercer estate.
He was lying in the wet grass near the old stone wall that separated the property from the private road beyond it.
For someone who had spent eight years protecting Adrian Mercer from threats, Grant looked like a man who had finally become a victim of one.
His expensive security uniform was torn.
His face was bruised.
His left hand was badly injured.
But he was alive.
Barely.
The ambulance lights painted the mansion grounds in flashes of red and blue as paramedics rushed toward him.
Adrian stood beneath the covered entrance, watching from a distance.
He wanted to run forward.
He wanted to demand answers.
He wanted to grab Grant by the shoulders and ask why.
Why had he betrayed him?
Why had he allowed strangers into his home?
Why had he turned the security system against the very person he was hired to protect?
But Dana Cho kept one hand raised.
“Stay here.”
Adrian looked at her.
“That man may know who did this.”
“And he may also be involved.”
“You don’t believe that.”
Dana did not answer immediately.
“I believe people can be both victims and suspects.”
The sentence bothered Adrian because it was true.
His entire life had been built around understanding people.
But tonight, every person he thought he understood had become a mystery.
Grant was taken into the ambulance.
Before the doors closed, his eyes opened slightly.
And even from a distance, Adrian saw something.
Fear.
Not guilt.
Not anger.
Fear.
Grant was afraid of something.
Or someone.
The ambulance drove away.
The rain continued falling.
And Adrian realized he was standing outside his own home, waiting for strangers to explain what had happened inside.
A feeling he hated.
Powerless.
The police investigation continued until almost sunrise.
Every room in the mansion revealed another piece of the puzzle.
The security cameras had not simply been turned off.
They had been replaced with recorded footage.
The intruders had planned the timing.
They knew exactly when Adrian would return.
They knew which entrances were protected.
They knew where the security blind spots were.
Someone had given them a map of his life.
Someone close.
When Adrian finally entered his father’s old study again, the room felt colder than before.
The hidden compartment remained open.
The documents had been removed.
But one thing remained on the desk.
The photograph of Emily Carter and Ivy.
Adrian picked it up carefully.
He studied the young girl in the picture.
A child standing beside his father.
A child his family had erased.
A child who had spent years believing she was invisible.
Behind him, footsteps approached.
“I knew you would find it eventually.”
Adrian turned.
His expression changed instantly.
Julian Mercer stood in the doorway.
His younger brother.
His suit was perfectly pressed.
His hair was neat.
Not a single sign that he had been involved in a violent break-in.
That alone made Adrian suspicious.
“Where have you been?”
Julian looked around the room.
“Interesting question.”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed.
“Answer it.”
Julian sighed.
“You still talk to me like I’m an employee.”
“You disappeared during an attack on my house.”
“I was not here.”
“That is exactly the problem.”
Julian walked slowly into the room.
For years, people had said the Mercer brothers looked alike.
Same dark hair.
Same sharp features.
Same family confidence.
But Adrian had always known the difference.
Adrian built things.
Julian wanted things.
“You found Father’s little secret.”
Adrian froze.
“You knew?”
Julian smiled slightly.
“That’s the question you should be asking.”
“Did you know about Emily?”
“I knew Father had secrets.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Julian walked toward the desk.
“He always thought he was smarter than everyone else.”
Adrian watched him carefully.
“You sound angry.”
“I am.”
“Why?”
Julian laughed quietly.
A bitter sound.
“Because everyone thinks you earned everything.”
The words hung between them.
Adrian said nothing.
Julian continued.
“You were always the responsible one.”
“Julian—”
“No, let me finish.”
His voice became sharper.
“You were the son Father trusted. The son who got invited into meetings. The son who learned the business.”
“And you?”
Julian looked away.
“I was the son people felt sorry for.”
Adrian felt a strange sadness.
Because he realized this anger had been growing for years.
“I never saw you as less.”
“That was the problem.”
Julian turned back.
“You didn’t see me at all.”
Silence filled the room.
For a moment, Adrian saw his brother.
Not the possible enemy.
Not the suspect.
The younger boy who used to follow him around their childhood home.
The boy who wanted to prove he mattered.
Then Adrian remembered Ivy’s words.
By tomorrow morning, everything will belong to me.
“Were you inside the house tonight?”
Julian’s expression did not change.
“No.”
“Were you involved?”
“No.”
“You expect me to believe that?”
Julian smiled.
“Do you believe anyone anymore?”
The answer hurt because Adrian did not have one.
Julian stepped closer.
“You found the documents.”
“Yes.”
“You know what Father did.”
“I know he protected Emily and her daughter.”
Julian’s face changed.
Only slightly.
But Adrian noticed.
“You knew about Ivy.”
A pause.
Then:
“I knew there was a girl.”
Adrian stared.
“You knew she existed?”
“Yes.”
“And you said nothing?”
Julian looked away.
“Father made his choices.”
“She is a child.”
“She is a complication.”
Adrian’s expression hardened.
There it was.
The difference between them.
To Adrian, Ivy was a person.
To Julian, she was a problem.
“What happened to Emily?”
Julian remained silent.
“Julian.”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
The room became tense.
Then Julian said something that changed everything.
“Father wasn’t protecting her from outsiders.”
Adrian felt his stomach tighten.
“What does that mean?”
Julian looked directly at him.
“He was protecting her from us.”
The words were almost impossible to hear.
Adrian stared.
“What are you saying?”
“I’m saying Father knew this family had become dangerous.”
“That’s not possible.”
“Why?”
“Because he trusted us.”
Julian smiled sadly.
“No, Adrian.”
He looked toward the old photograph.
“He trusted you.”
The sentence stayed in the air.
Before Adrian could respond, his phone rang.
Dana.
He answered immediately.
“Lieutenant?”
Her voice was serious.
“We need you at the hospital.”
“Grant?”
“Yes.”
“Is he awake?”
“He is.”
Adrian looked at Julian.
“What did he say?”
A pause.
Then Dana answered.
“He asked for you.”
“Why?”
“He said there is something you need to know before your brother finds it.”
Adrian’s eyes moved back to Julian.
His brother stood silently.
Watching.
Waiting.
“Did Grant say anything else?”
Dana lowered her voice.
“One more thing.”
“What?”
“He said the attack tonight was not supposed to happen.”
Adrian frowned.
“What does that mean?”
“He said someone changed the plan.”
The words created a new fear.
Because if the attack was not supposed to happen tonight…
Then someone had lost control.
Someone had become desperate.
And desperate people made mistakes.
Adrian looked at Julian one last time.
For years, he had believed the greatest threat to his family came from outside.
Competitors.
Enemies.
People who wanted what the Mercer name represented.
But now he understood.
The most dangerous battles were not fought at the gates.
They happened inside the walls.
And somewhere between his father’s hidden trust, Emily Carter’s forgotten past, and Julian’s ambition, the truth was waiting.
May you like
A truth someone had already tried to bury once.
And would kill to bury again.
