Chapter 6 - The Vault Behind the Wall

Dante reached Kingsley Tower before the police.

I stayed with Lily.

That was not negotiable.

But Dante kept me connected through his phone.

The vault sat behind a paneled wall inside Arthur's former office.

When Dante arrived, the door was open.

No one was inside.

One shelf was empty.

"What was there?" I asked.

Eleanor stood beside me in the hospital room.

"A black ledger."

"What's in it?"

"Arthur's private transactions."

Dante searched the vault.

Then stopped.

"There's blood."

My stomach tightened.

"Whose?"

"Don't know."

A trail led toward the service elevator.

Security footage had been erased.

But not everything.

Dante's team recovered seventeen seconds from a secondary camera.

A woman entered the vault.

Blonde.

Wedding dress hidden beneath a long coat.

Vanessa.

I stared at the screen.

"She opened it?"

"Looks like it."

"But she needed my biometric authorization."

Eleanor whispered, "The hospital sample."

Vanessa had arranged the anonymous call.

She knew where Lily would be born.

Had she arranged the sample theft too?

Dante called her.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then my phone buzzed.

A photograph.

Vanessa.

Her face bruised.

Sitting somewhere dark.

She held the black ledger.

Text beneath it:

HE LIED TO ALL OF US.

Another message arrived.

DON'T TRUST VOSS.

Then:

GRANT DIDN'T ALTER YOUR TREATMENT.

I stared.

That contradicted the documents.

Another message.

VOSS DID.

WHY?

I typed.

Three dots appeared.

Then vanished.

Appeared again.

Finally:

BECAUSE LILY WAS NEVER SUPPOSED TO BE BORN.

My blood went cold.

Dante read the message over the video call.

"Find Vanessa," he ordered his team.

Dr. Voss had disappeared from the hospital.

His office was empty.

His home was empty.

His passport had been used at a private aviation terminal two hours earlier, but he had never boarded the plane.

Eleanor sat beside me.

"What aren't you telling us?"

She looked exhausted.

"Arthur trusted Malcolm."

"That isn't an answer."

"Malcolm managed medical records for the entire family."

"Why would he sabotage my fertility?"

"I don't know."

Dante's voice came through the phone.

"I do."

He had found another document inside the vault.

Not the ledger.

A will.

Arthur's final unsigned codicil.

It acknowledged Dante as his biological son.

More importantly, it changed the succession rules.

If either Grant or Dante produced the first biological granddaughter, that child would inherit Arthur's controlling family trust at age thirty.

Until then, her guardian would vote the shares.

Lily was worth control of the Kingsley empire.

Not because she was Grant's daughter alone.

Because she was Arthur's first granddaughter.

"Who becomes guardian if something happens to me?"

My attorney checked the trust language.

Then went silent.

"Who?"

"Grant."

My chest tightened.

Dante swore.

There it was.

The real danger.

If I lived, Lily's shares remained protected under my guardianship.

If I didn't, Grant controlled them.

Unless Grant became legally disqualified.

Dante said, "We're changing your estate documents today."

We did.

I named my sister as Lily's primary guardian.

And Dante as trustee of her financial interests.

He objected.

I didn't care.

"You're the only person in this mess who protected her before knowing what she owned."

He stopped arguing.

That afternoon, Vanessa finally called.

She was hiding in a hotel outside Manhattan.

Dante brought her to us.

The bride from Grant's abandoned wedding entered my hospital room still wearing remnants of bridal makeup.

She looked at Lily.

Then at me.

"I'm sorry."

"For what?"

"For believing him."

I almost laughed.

"So did I."

She handed me the black ledger.

Grant had borrowed hundreds of millions against assets he didn't fully control.

Voss had helped conceal financial transactions through medical foundations.

But the fertility sabotage?

Vanessa had found something else.

"Grant ordered Voss to delay conception," she said. "That's true."

My stomach turned.

"But Voss went further."

"Why?"

"Because he had been stealing from the Kingsley medical trust for twenty years. Arthur discovered it before he died."

Dante understood.

"If Grant had a child, the trust would undergo an automatic independent audit."

"Exactly."

Lily's birth had triggered it.

Voss wasn't protecting Grant.

He was protecting himself.

"How much?"

Vanessa opened the ledger.

"Nearly ninety million dollars."

Eleanor sat down.

"And Grant?"

"Knew some of it. Not all."

So Grant had destroyed our marriage for money and control.

Voss had manipulated our medical treatment to protect an even larger theft.

Two selfish men.

One convenient woman to blame.

Me.

Then Dante's security chief entered.

"We found Voss."

"Where?"

"Parking garage beneath this building."

My heart stopped.

"Why is he here?"

The security chief looked at Lily.

"He wasn't coming for Claire."

Dante stood.

"He was coming for the baby's medical records."

Police arrested Voss twenty minutes later.

In his bag were forged laboratory documents designed to challenge Lily's paternity.

He had planned to erase the one person whose birth could expose everything.

Not physically.

Legally.

Make Lily disappear from the Kingsley line.

Make the audit disappear with her.

By evening, federal investigators had the ledger.

Grant's attorneys began resigning.

Voss requested counsel.

Vanessa agreed to testify.

For the first time, I thought we might actually be safe.

Then Eleanor received a message.

She read it.

Her face changed.

"Claire."

"What?"

"It's from Grant."

She handed me the phone.

One sentence.

ASK DANTE WHY SOFIA VALE REALLY DIED.

I looked at Dante.

He had seen it.

His expression went blank.

Then Grant sent a photograph.

A police report.

Sofia Vale.

Fatal automobile accident.

And beneath her name was the signature of the officer who had closed the investigation.

Dante stared at it.

He knew the name.

So did Eleanor.

May you like

Because the officer had later become head of security for Arthur Kingsley.

And he was still working for the family.
