Chapter 5 - The Father at the Door

I didn't answer.

"Claire."

Grant sounded almost gentle.

That frightened me more than anger would have.

"Open the door."

I called Dante again.

No answer.

Grant continued.

"I just want to see her."

"No."

Silence.

Then:

"Her name is Lily."

My stomach dropped.

I had never told him.

"How do you know?"

"Open the door."

"No."

"Claire, she's my daughter."

"You didn't know she existed six hours ago."

"I know now."

"And suddenly you're interested?"

His voice hardened.

"Don't do this."

I nearly laughed.

"Do what? Keep you outside a locked door? You spent six months telling the world I couldn't give you a child."

"I was angry."

"You organized interviews."

"My publicist did."

"You approved them."

Silence.

I pressed the nurse call button.

Nothing happened.

That scared me.

Grant said, "The security guard outside is fine."

I looked toward the door.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"Then where is he?"

"I asked hospital administration for privacy."

Of course.

Kingsley money.

Kingsley influence.

Even now.

"Leave."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because we need to fix this before morning."

There it was.

Not love.

Not fatherhood.

Business.

"What happens in the morning?"

"You already know."

"Lily gets shares."

"Shares she can't use for eighteen years."

"Then why do you care?"

"Because people around you will use her."

"Like you?"

He went silent.

Then the handle stopped moving.

"I made mistakes."

"You destroyed me."

"I protected the company."

"From your unborn daughter?"

"I didn't know you were pregnant."

"You made sure I thought I couldn't become pregnant."

That silence was different.

I knew.

Dante had been right.

Grant knew exactly what had happened with my fertility treatment.

"Voss kept records," I said.

Grant breathed slowly.

"Dante showed you."

"Yes."

"You don't know what Dante is."

"I know what you are."

His voice sharpened.

"He's my father's bastard."

I flinched at the cruelty.

"And he's Lily's uncle."

Grant went silent.

I continued.

"He protected her before he even knew."

"Because he wants the company."

"No."

"You think men like Dante Vale do anything without wanting something?"

I looked at Lily.

"Yes."

"Then you're more naive than I thought."

I heard an elevator chime outside.

Grant stopped speaking.

Another man's voice.

Dante.

"Move away from the door."

Relief hit me so hard I nearly cried.

Grant laughed.

"Perfect."

Dante answered, "You have three seconds."

"You going to threaten me in a maternity ward?"

"Two."

Grant moved.

The door opened moments later.

Dante entered alone.

His knuckles were untouched.

His expression told me Grant had wisely walked away.

"You okay?"

I nodded.

"Lily?"

"Fine."

He locked the door.

Then I noticed the red folder.

"You found it."

He placed it beside me.

"Everything."

I read until sunrise.

Every lie.

Every payment.

Every falsified test.

Every plan Grant had made with Vanessa's family before divorcing me.

The worst document was simple.

A signed instruction from Grant to Dr. Voss.

Delay viable conception until further notice.

I read it twice.

Then put it down.

I didn't cry.

Dante watched me.

"You can."

"What?"

"Cry."

"No."

"Claire."

"I gave Grant enough tears."

Lily opened her eyes.

Dark blue newborn eyes that couldn't focus yet.

I smiled.

"I think I'm done giving him anything."

Dante sat beside the bed.

"What do you want to do?"

"Register Lily's birth."

"That will trigger the trust."

"I know."

"Grant will fight."

"I know."

"Reporters will find out."

"I know."

He studied me.

"And?"

I looked at my daughter.

"Put my name on the certificate."

Dante nodded.

"And Grant?"

I hesitated.

Then answered.

"Put his name too."

Dante looked surprised.

"He's her biological father. I won't start Lily's life with a lie just because Grant filled mine with them."

For the first time that night, Dante smiled.

Not the cold smile businessmen feared.

A real one.

"That's why he'll never beat you."

At 8:03 a.m., Lily Rose Bennett Kingsley's birth certificate was filed.

At 8:04, the Kingsley family trust automatically notified its trustees.

At 8:07, Grant filed an emergency petition challenging paternity.

I laughed when my attorney told me.

"He wanted his name removed?"

"No."

"What does he want?"

"Temporary control over Lily's trust interest."

Of course.

Grant didn't want to stop being her father.

He wanted to control what she owned.

At 9:30, Eleanor returned.

She carried no security.

No lawyers.

Only a small wooden box.

"This belonged to Arthur."

Inside was a gold key.

"What does it open?"

"A private vault."

Dante frowned.

"Where?"

"Kingsley Tower."

Grant's building.

Eleanor looked at me.

"Arthur kept original records there. If Grant realizes Sofia's file survived, he'll destroy whatever remains."

Dante stood.

"I'll go."

"No," Eleanor said.

"Why?"

"Because the vault requires two biometric authorizations."

"Whose?"

"Grant's."

Dante laughed.

"That could be difficult."

"And Claire's."

I stared at her.

"Mine?"

"Arthur added you after the wedding."

"Why?"

Eleanor looked at Lily.

"I think he suspected Grant would eventually become exactly what he became."

Before we could decide what to do, my attorney called.

Grant had requested an emergency hearing for that afternoon.

He wanted Lily's financial rights frozen.

We appeared remotely.

Grant sat beside three attorneys.

I sat beside Dante.

Grant looked exhausted.

Then his attorney made the mistake that ended everything.

"Mrs. Bennett intentionally concealed a Kingsley heir."

My attorney responded.

"Because Mr. Kingsley publicly declared her medically incapable of having one."

The judge looked at Grant.

"Was that statement medically accurate?"

Grant's attorney hesitated.

I slid the red folder toward my attorney.

"Your Honor," she said, "we have evidence suggesting Mr. Kingsley knew it was not."

Grant's face changed.

He recognized the folder.

For the first time, fear appeared.

The hearing was adjourned pending investigation.

Grant left the video call without looking at me.

Twenty minutes later, Dante received a security alert.

Someone had entered Kingsley Tower's restricted executive floor.

Using Grant's credentials.

Then Eleanor's phone rang.

She answered.

Her face drained.

"What?"

She listened.

Then looked at us.

"The vault."

Dante stood.

"What about it?"

"The door just opened."

"But it needs two authorizations."

Eleanor stared at me.

"Exactly."

I looked down at my hospital wristband.

Then remembered the blood taken during labor.

May you like

Someone had my biometric sample.

Someone had opened Arthur Kingsley's vault pretending to be me.
