Chapter 9 - The Moretti Name

Evelyn didn't run.

She asked for me.

Federal agents surrounded the building.

I watched through glass as she sat in an interview room.

Elegant.

Gray-haired.

Composed.

Sienna refused to see her.

I didn't blame her.

Evelyn's cooler contained no biological material.

Only records.

The remaining Northstar archive.

She wanted immunity.

She didn't get it.

But she talked.

Victor had not ordered Anthony Moretti's death.

Evelyn had.

Anthony discovered she was secretly retaining embryos.

He planned to report her.

She arranged the accident.

Margaret broke down when she heard.

Dominic's father demanded prosecution.

For the first time, our families weren't enemies.

We were survivors of the same woman.

Evelyn also revealed something about Grant.

His infertility diagnosis had been exaggerated.

He carried a mutation.

But he was not sterile.

Victor had manipulated his records too.

Grant sat silently when I told him.

Then laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because the alternative was screaming.

"He did it to both of us."

"Yes."

"I blamed you for something that wasn't even true about me."

"Yes."

He looked at Rose.

"How do you live with being that wrong?"

"You don't ask the person you hurt to teach you."

He nodded.

"Fair."

Grant began therapy.

I knew because he told Elena, not because he announced it publicly.

He also resigned from two Kingsley boards and cooperated with investigators.

None of that erased our marriage.

But accountability wasn't erasure.

It was the beginning of becoming someone else.

Dominic's father eventually met me.

His name was Carlo.

He brought no lawyers.

No gifts.

Only a photograph of Anthony.

I had his eyes.

Carlo cried before I did.

"He would have loved you."

"You don't know me."

"No."

He nodded.

"But he loved the idea of you before you were born."

He handed me a letter Anthony had written to Margaret.

It contained no secrets.

No conspiracies.

Only hope.

If it's a girl, tell her she never has to carry anyone's name to belong somewhere.

I read that sentence three times.

Rose Bennett.

Claire Bennett.

Names could be inheritance.

They could also be choices.

Weeks passed.

The case against Victor and Evelyn expanded.

Northstar closed.

Victims came forward.

Grant established a compensation fund using his personal assets.

He didn't put his name on it.

Sienna entered a plea agreement.

Dr. Reeves surrendered his license.

Margaret stayed nearby.

We began having coffee.

Not mother and daughter.

Not yet.

Two women learning what remained.

Dominic never pushed.

One night he came to my apartment carrying takeout.

Rose was asleep.

We ate on the floor because I still hadn't bought a dining table.

"You own three hotels," I said.

"Four."

"And you're eating noodles on my floor."

"Your floor has excellent ambiance."

I smiled.

Then he became serious.

"I don't want to be your protector."

I looked at him.

"I want to be someone you choose when you don't need protection."

That sentence stayed with me.

I leaned forward.

Kissed him.

Slowly.

No rescue.

No debt.

Choice.

His hand touched my cheek.

Then my phone rang.

Grant.

I answered.

His voice was urgent.

"Claire, don't panic."

Terrible opening.

"What happened?"

"Rose's paternity file was accessed."

"By whom?"

"We don't know."

My blood chilled.

"Why does that matter?"

"Because whoever accessed it changed something."

"What?"

"The genetic profile."

Dominic was already standing.

Grant continued.

"Claire, the DNA report says I'm Rose's father."

"I know."

"That's not what changed."

A pause.

"It says there was another paternal match."

I stared at Dominic.

"That's impossible."

"I thought so too."

May you like

Grant's next words barely came out.

"The second match is Dominic."
