Chapter 12 - The Father Who Knew Everything

Grant and I had never met by chance.

Victor arranged it.

The charity auction.

The seating.

The mutual friend who introduced us.

Even the restaurant where Grant later "accidentally" ran into me.

Our love had been manipulated before it began.

That truth hurt differently.

Because despite everything, I had loved him.

"Was any of it real?" Grant asked.

I knew what he meant.

"Yes."

He looked surprised.

"What happened after was real. We made choices."

Including terrible ones.

That was important.

Victor could arrange a meeting.

He couldn't force Grant to humiliate me.

He couldn't force me to stay too long.

Manipulation explained beginnings.

It didn't erase responsibility.

Grant understood.

The jury convicted Evelyn on multiple charges.

Victor's plea guaranteed prison.

Northstar's assets were placed into a restitution fund.

The public story exploded.

But I refused interviews.

I wasn't interested in becoming famous for surviving.

I wanted a life.

Margaret moved into an apartment nearby.

We established boundaries.

She respected them.

Carlo became something like an uncle to me.

He never insisted I use the Moretti name.

Dominic and I continued slowly.

Then one afternoon he asked me to visit Lucia's grave.

I went.

He stood beside the headstone for a long time.

"I spent three years thinking revenge would make this quieter."

"Did it?"

"No."

"What did?"

He looked at me.

"You."

I shook my head.

"Don't make me responsible for healing you."

A small smile.

"See? That."

I laughed.

Then he corrected himself.

"You didn't heal me. You made me want to."

Better.

Much better.

At home, Rose began smiling.

The first time she smiled at Grant, he cried.

I pretended not to notice.

The first time she smiled at Dominic, he froze like he'd been shot.

I absolutely noticed.

"You okay?"

"No."

"Why?"

"She smiled at me."

"Babies do that."

"Not like that."

I laughed until Rose startled.

For a few months, life became almost ordinary.

Then Victor requested one final meeting before transfer to federal prison.

I refused.

He sent no threat.

No secret.

Only one sentence.

Tell Claire I am sorry I mistook control for love.

I didn't visit.

Some apologies arrive too late to deserve an audience.

Grant did visit him.

He never told me what they discussed.

I never asked.

Then Grant made a decision that shocked Manhattan.

He resigned as CEO.

He retained ownership but appointed independent leadership.

He sold the penthouse where we had lived.

And he moved into a smaller apartment fifteen minutes from Rose.

Not small by normal standards.

Grant remained Grant.

But smaller.

For him.

He started learning how to be a father without making fatherhood a performance.

Then one evening he came to my apartment looking unsettled.

"I need to tell you something."

"What now?"

"I found another account."

My stomach dropped.

"Northstar?"

"No."

He handed me documents.

A trust.

Created by Victor when I married Grant.

Beneficiary: Claire Bennett Kingsley.

Value: sixty million dollars.

I stared.

"What is this?"

"Insurance."

"For what?"

"If the program became public, you were supposed to be paid to disappear."

I almost laughed.

Even Victor's guilt had been financial.

"What happens to it?"

"It's legally yours."

"I don't want it."

"Then don't keep it."

I knew immediately.

The money became the Lucia-Anthony Foundation.

For victims of reproductive abuse.

Legal aid.

Medical care.

Privacy advocacy.

Dominic stared when I told him the name.

"You included Anthony."

"He was my father."

"And Lucia?"

"She found me before I knew I needed finding."

He kissed my forehead.

Then my phone rang.

Elena.

Her voice was tense.

"We found something in Victor's final disclosure."

"What?"

"A sealed adoption record."

My heart stopped.

"Whose?"

"Claire..."

She hesitated.

"It's Margaret's."

I looked toward my mother.

She had gone completely still.

Elena continued.

"The record names another infant."

Another child.

May you like

Born the same day as me.

And Margaret had never told me.
