Chapter 5 - The Truth Hidden in My Medical Records

Ethan’s voice came through the phone.

“Shara needs to know who her real enemy is.”

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not Vanessa.

Not me.

Not even the air in the room seemed to move.

I stared at the phone in Vanessa’s hand.

The same man who had lied to my face for years.

The same man who had told another woman he wanted a “real family.”

The same man who believed I was too broken to leave.

Now he was warning me.

It would have been easier if he sounded guilty.

If he sounded desperate.

If he sounded like the man who destroyed everything and finally understood what he had done.

But he didn’t.

He sounded afraid.

And that scared me more.

Vanessa slowly put the phone on speaker.

“Where are you, Ethan?”

Her voice was different now.

Not romantic.

Not soft.

Cold.

“I know you’re with Shara.”

I looked at Vanessa.

“How?”

There was a pause.

Then Ethan answered.

“Because Vanessa is not the only person who knows what happened.”

My stomach tightened.

“What happened?”

I stepped closer to the phone.

For the first time since I left the house, I wanted to hear him speak.

Not because I missed him.

Because I needed answers.

“Shara,” Ethan said quietly.

The sound of my name almost made me angry.

He had said it thousands of times.

When he loved me.

When he lied to me.

When he promised me things he never intended to keep.

“Don’t trust anyone right now.”

I laughed.

A short, bitter laugh.

“Are you serious?”

The silence on the other end told me he knew exactly why I reacted that way.

“You brought another woman into our bedroom on our anniversary.”

My voice shook.

“You told her I couldn’t give you a family.”

“Shara—”

“No.”

I stopped him.

“You don’t get to warn me about trust.”

Vanessa looked at me.

She didn’t interrupt.

She knew this was something I needed to say.

“You spent years making me believe my body failed us,” I continued.

My hand moved over my stomach.

“But you knew.”

Ethan went silent.

That was the answer.

That was always the answer.

“You knew something.”

His breathing changed.

“Who told you?”

I froze.

Not denial.

Not confusion.

Who told you?

The question confirmed everything.

“You knew.”

“Shara, listen to me.”

“No.”

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me the truth.”

A long pause.

Then Ethan said:

“I didn’t know you were pregnant.”

I almost smiled.

“Interesting.”

“Because that’s the only thing you’re telling the truth about?”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

Ethan lowered his voice.

“There are things you don’t understand.”

“Then explain.”

Another pause.

Then he said something I never expected.

“I didn’t leave you because you couldn’t have children.”

The room became silent.

My heart started beating faster.

“What?”

“I was never told that you couldn’t.”

I stared at the phone.

“What are you saying?”

“I’m saying someone wanted you to believe that.”

My fingers went cold.

“No.”

“Yes.”

Ethan’s voice became more urgent.

“Shara, you need to remember your appointment two years ago.”

The memory came back instantly.

The fertility clinic.

The doctor’s expression.

The conversation that never happened.

The moment Ethan walked into the room.

My heart sank.

“What did you do?”

“I didn’t do this.”

“You were there.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Silence.

Then:

“Because someone asked me to be there.”

I felt like the ground moved beneath me.

“Who?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

That was the moment I knew.

The affair.

The lies.

The woman upstairs.

The anniversary.

Those were only pieces.

There was something bigger.

Something I had missed because I was too focused on saving my marriage.

“Ethan.”

My voice became quiet.

“Who asked you?”

Before he could answer, the call disconnected.

I stared at the phone.

Vanessa immediately called back.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

“He hung up,” she whispered.

I looked at her.

“Who is he afraid of?”

Vanessa didn’t respond.

Because she didn’t know.

And for the first time, I realized something.

Maybe Ethan wasn’t the person controlling everything.

Maybe Ethan was just another piece.

That thought terrified me.

I spent the next hour going through every document Vanessa had.

Every message.

Every payment.

Every note.

I wasn’t looking for proof of cheating anymore.

I was looking for a pattern.

And I found one.

The payments started two years ago.

The exact same time my fertility problems became worse.

The exact same time Ethan changed.

The exact same time he stopped looking at me like his wife and started looking at me like someone he needed to manage.

There was one name connected to several payments.

A private medical consulting company.

Whitmore Health Solutions.

I searched the name.

Nothing.

Too little information.

Too clean.

Companies like that didn’t disappear.

They hid.

Then Vanessa opened another file.

“This was inside Ethan’s office.”

She handed me a printed email.

The sender was unknown.

The message was short.

Everything is working. Keep her believing the diagnosis.

I stopped breathing.

Below it was a reply.

From Ethan.

How much longer?

The answer came a minute later.

Until she gives up.

I dropped the paper.

“No.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“Shara…”

“No.”

I shook my head.

Because my brain refused to accept it.

The years.

The treatments.

The pain.

The nights I cried alone.

The moments I blamed myself.

All of it.

Could it have been fake?

My phone buzzed.

A text message.

From Dr. Collins.

I opened it.

Shara, I found something in your medical file that was added without my knowledge.

My heartbeat stopped.

Another message arrived.

Please do not contact the clinic from your own phone.

I looked at Vanessa.

“What?”

She read my face.

“What happened?”

I showed her.

She immediately stood up.

“Why would she say that?”

I didn’t answer.

Because I already knew.

Someone was watching.

Someone knew where I was.

Someone knew what I was finding.

Then another message appeared.

This time from Dr. Collins.

I need you to come to my office. Alone. There is something I should have told you two years ago.

I stared at the screen.

Alone.

That word bothered me.

Because nobody was alone anymore.

Not really.

Not after everything I discovered.

“I’m going.”

Vanessa immediately shook her head.

“No.”

“I need answers.”

“And Ethan knows you’re looking.”

“I can’t keep running.”

She looked at me.

“You’re not running.”

“Then what am I doing?”

Vanessa’s expression softened.

“You’re finally fighting.”

The next morning, I went to the clinic.

I didn’t tell Lily.

I didn’t tell Ethan.

I didn’t tell Vanessa where I was going.

For once, I kept a secret.

The waiting room looked exactly the same.

Same chairs.

Same magazines.

Same walls.

But I was different.

The woman who walked into that clinic two years ago believed she had a problem.

The woman walking in now knew someone had created one.

Dr. Collins opened the door herself.

The second she saw me, her expression changed.

“You came alone.”

I nodded.

“Why?”

She closed the door behind me.

“Because if what I found is true, you cannot let anyone know you’re here.”

A cold feeling moved through me.

“What did you find?”

She walked to her desk.

Then she placed a file in front of me.

My name was written on the cover.

I opened it.

The first page was my medical report.

The second page was different.

A handwritten note.

Not from the clinic.

Not from a doctor.

From someone else.

And underneath my name were three words that made my hands start shaking.

Pregnancy was expected.

I looked up at Dr. Collins.

“Who wrote this?”

She didn’t answer.

Instead, she reached into the drawer and pulled out a photograph.

She placed it on the desk.

I looked at it.

And my entire body went cold.

Because the person standing beside Dr. Collins in the photo was someone I had never expected to see.

May you like

Someone from Ethan’s past.

Someone who was supposed to be dead.
