Chapter 3 - The Woman Who Was Supposed To Replace Me

I arrived at the abandoned coffee shop twenty minutes before midnight.

I almost turned around.

The building looked exactly like the kind of place people chose when they didn’t want to be found.

The lights were dim.

The parking lot was nearly empty.

The windows reflected only darkness.

And yet I was there.

Because a woman who had been lying in my bedroom had just told me she knew the truth about my marriage.

A part of me knew I shouldn’t have come.

A stranger’s message was not a reason to walk into an unknown situation.

But Ethan had spent years convincing me that I was the problem.

That I was too emotional.

Too sensitive.

Too desperate for a family that might never happen.

And now, for the first time, someone else was telling me that maybe I had been wrong about something.

Maybe I wasn’t crazy.

Maybe I wasn’t imagining the distance.

Maybe there was a reason my husband had changed.

I sat in my car with both hands wrapped around the steering wheel.

The ultrasound photo rested on the passenger seat.

I looked at it.

Then I looked at the entrance.

Finally, I grabbed my coat and stepped outside.

The rain had stopped, but the pavement was still wet.

Every step toward the door felt heavier.

When I entered, the woman was already there.

She sat alone at the back table.

Her blonde hair was pulled into a loose ponytail.

The confidence I had heard in her voice the night before was gone.

She looked nervous.

Almost afraid.

For a few seconds, neither of us spoke.

I hated that she looked human.

It would have been easier if she had looked cruel.

If she had looked like the villain I wanted her to be.

Instead, she looked like someone carrying a secret.

“Shara.”

Hearing my name from her mouth made my stomach tighten.

“You know who I am.”

She looked down.

“Yes.”

“Of course you do.”

My voice sounded calmer than I felt.

“That’s probably why you felt comfortable sleeping with my husband.”

Her face changed.

Not anger.

Guilt.

“I know what this looks like.”

I almost laughed.

“No. You don’t.”

I sat across from her.

“You don’t know what it feels like to spend three years believing the person beside you loves you while they’re planning a life without you.”

She looked away.

For a moment, silence filled the space between us.

Then she whispered.

“My name is Vanessa.”

I didn’t respond.

“I’m not going to pretend I didn’t make mistakes.”

That surprised me.

“I knew Ethan was married.”

The honesty caught me off guard.

“But I didn’t know everything.”

I stared at her.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa took a deep breath.

“It means Ethan lied to me too.”

I felt my eyebrows pull together.

“You expect me to believe that?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“I don’t expect you to believe anything I say.”

She reached into her purse and placed something on the table.

A folder.

My eyes immediately went to it.

“What is that?”

“Proof.”

I didn’t touch it.

“What kind of proof?”

Vanessa looked at me.

“The proof that Ethan was planning to leave you long before tonight.”

My chest tightened.

I slowly opened the folder.

Inside were printed documents.

Emails.

Hotel reservations.

Photos.

My hands became colder with every page.

The first document showed a conversation between Ethan and Vanessa.

Not romantic.

Not what I expected.

Business-like.

Cold.

Ethan had written:

Once everything is finalized, I’ll handle Shara.

Handle.

Like I was a problem.

Like I was paperwork.

I turned the page.

Another message.

Ethan:

She won’t suspect anything. She’s too focused on trying to get pregnant.

My vision blurred.

I closed my eyes.

Because that was the cruelest part.

He knew.

He knew how badly I wanted a child.

He knew every appointment.

Every medication.

Every tear.

And he used my hope as a weakness.

“Why are you showing me this?”

Vanessa looked down.

“Because I found out what he was really doing.”

“What was he doing?”

She hesitated.

Then she said:

“He wasn’t just leaving you for me.”

A cold feeling moved through my body.

“What?”

Vanessa swallowed.

“Ethan never planned to build a normal life with me.”

I stared at her.

“Then what did he plan?”

She looked directly into my eyes.

“He planned to use me to make you disappear.”

The words sat between us.

Disappear.

I felt my heartbeat slow.

“What does that mean?”

Vanessa looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t know everything.”

“Then tell me what you know.”

She took a breath.

“Six months ago, Ethan started talking about your marriage differently.”

“How?”

“He stopped saying he was unhappy.”

I frowned.

“Then what did he say?”

Vanessa looked away.

“He said you were becoming an obstacle.”

The word made my stomach twist.

An obstacle.

Not a wife.

Not a person.

An obstacle.

“He told me he needed a clean way out,” Vanessa continued. “Something that made everyone believe he had a reason.”

I stared at her.

“And the reason was me?”

She nodded slowly.

“He wanted everyone to think he left because you couldn’t give him children.”

My hand moved instinctively toward my coat pocket.

The ultrasound photo.

The secret Ethan didn’t know.

The secret that changed everything.

Vanessa noticed the movement.

Her expression changed.

“You’re pregnant.”

I froze.

“How did you know?”

“Because I saw the photo.”

My heart dropped.

“When?”

“Last night.”

She looked guilty.

“When I was upstairs.”

I looked away.

The truth felt impossible.

The woman who helped destroy my marriage had also been the person who saw the one thing that could have saved it.

“You saw it.”

“Yes.”

“And you still stayed.”

Her eyes filled with shame.

“I didn’t know.”

“You heard him say I couldn’t have kids.”

She nodded.

“I did.”

“And you believed him?”

“No.”

That answer came quickly.

Too quickly.

I looked at her.

Vanessa whispered:

“Because Ethan told me the same story about you that he told everyone else.”

My fingers tightened.

“What story?”

“That you were unstable.”

I felt something inside me crack.

“He said you were obsessed with having a baby. That doctors had told you there was no chance. That you refused to accept reality.”

Every word was another cut.

Because those were private moments.

Moments I shared with my husband.

Moments he turned into a weapon.

“I’m sorry,” Vanessa whispered.

I looked at her.

“I don’t know if I can forgive you.”

“I understand.”

“But I need to know why you’re helping me.”

She was quiet for a long time.

Then she reached into her purse again.

This time, she pulled out a small black notebook.

“I found this in Ethan’s office.”

I stared at it.

“What is it?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then why give it to me?”

“Because my name is inside.”

That caught my attention.

I opened the notebook.

The first few pages contained handwritten notes.

Dates.

Names.

Numbers.

Then I saw it.

My own name.

Shara Whitman.

Written in Ethan’s handwriting.

Beside it was a date.

A date from two months earlier.

And underneath it were four words.

My hands started shaking.

“What is this?”

Vanessa’s face went pale.

“I was hoping you could tell me.”

I looked closer.

The handwriting became clearer.

The note was not about divorce.

It was not about leaving.

It was about something else.

Something planned.

Something that had started long before our anniversary.

I closed the notebook.

“I need to go.”

Vanessa stood.

“Shara, wait.”

I looked back.

“There’s something else.”

“What?”

Her expression changed.

Fear replaced guilt.

“Before you came here, Ethan called me.”

My heart stopped.

“What did he say?”

She looked at the door.

“He knows you’re not at your sister’s house.”

A chill ran through me.

“How?”

Vanessa didn’t answer immediately.

Then she whispered:

“Because someone has been following you since you left.”

I walked outside.

My phone immediately buzzed.

A new message.

From Ethan.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

I know where you are.

Then another message appeared.

A photo.

Taken from across the street.

It showed me standing outside the coffee shop.

And behind me was a man I had never seen before.

He was holding something in his hand.

Something that belonged to me.

My old house key.

May you like

And then my phone rang.

The caller ID showed a name I never expected to see.
