Chapter 6 - The Wedding Trap

Vanessa stared at her father.
"What did you say?"
Anthony ignored her.
Rafael's face hardened.
"You shouldn't have come."
Anthony's gaze moved toward Sofia.
For the first time, I saw genuine shock.
"You're alive."
Sofia laughed without humor.
"Disappointed?"
Anthony looked at Rafael again.
"I paid you."
Rafael raised the gun.
"And I did the job."
"Apparently not."
"She disappeared. Everyone believed she was dead."
"That's not the job I gave you."
Vanessa looked sick.
"Dad."
Anthony finally looked at her.
"This isn't what you think."
I almost admired the predictability.
Every guilty person eventually said the same thing.
Sofia spoke.
"He ordered Rafael to make sure I never reached Dominic."
Anthony snapped, "You were blackmailing him."
"I was carrying his daughter."
"And threatening everything he'd built."
"No."
"You wanted money."
Sofia stepped forward.
"I wanted protection."
Anthony laughed.
"Same thing."
Vanessa backed away from him.
"You knew about Eva?"
Anthony's expression shifted.
"Yes."
"She contacted me."
"I know."
"Did you kill her?"
That question stopped the room.
Even Rafael looked toward Anthony.
Anthony's face became strangely tired.
"No."
Vanessa's eyes narrowed.
"Tell me the truth."
"I didn't kill Eva."
"Did Rafael?"
Anthony turned toward his nephew.
And in that second, I understood.
Anthony didn't know.
Rafael smiled.
"No."
Vanessa whispered, "Then who damaged her brakes?"
Rafael looked at her.
"You really want to know?"
Anthony said, "Shut up."
Rafael laughed.
"You spent your whole life cleaning up for him, Uncle. You still think you're the one holding the broom."
Anthony's face changed.
Rafael continued.
"Eva had the ledger."
"What?"
"She found it."
Anthony took one step closer.
"And you killed her for it."
Rafael shrugged.
"She wouldn't give it up."
Vanessa covered her mouth.
I felt my hands curl into fists.
Eva.
My sister.
A woman I'd never known existed.
Dead because of the same world I'd spent my life expanding.
"Where is the ledger?" Anthony demanded.
Rafael smiled.
"That's the funny part."
"What?"
"I never found it."
Sofia looked at me.
"Because Eva gave it to Mara."
Everyone turned.
Mara went still.
Rafael's expression vanished.
"What?"
Sofia nodded.
"That's why you've been following her."
Rafael grabbed Mara by the hair.
I moved.
Vanessa screamed.
Elias appeared in the doorway behind Anthony with two men.
Guns rose.
For several seconds, nobody breathed.
I spoke to Rafael.
"Let her go."
"Back off."
"You know how this ends."
He pressed the gun toward Mara.
"Do I?"
"Yes."
Mara's face was pale but steady.
Then she looked at me.
Not Rafael.
Me.
And smiled.
A strange, tiny smile.
I understood too late.
She kicked the chair backward.
Rafael lost balance.
Elias moved.
The gun fired into the ceiling.
I reached Mara first.
Vanessa tackled Rafael's arm.
Anthony froze.
Within seconds, Elias had Rafael on the floor.
Mara's wrists were freed.
Sofia stood against the wall shaking.
Nobody died.
That felt almost miraculous.
But the truth was far from over.
Because Mara didn't have the ledger.
Not physically.
She explained everything at the safe house.
Eva had found Dominic's records months before her death.
She knew carrying them would get her killed.
So she photographed every page.
Encrypted the files.
Then divided the access credentials between three people.
Mara had one part.
Sofia had another.
Dr. Cole held the third without knowing what it opened.
"Where are the files?" I asked.
Mara looked at Elena.
"In her medical account."
I stared.
"What?"
Eva had hidden the encrypted archive inside a cloud backup linked to Elena's pediatric records.
Medical privacy made it less likely to be discovered.
The $43,870 bill hadn't merely exposed Elena.
It exposed the path to Dominic's ledger.
Everything had started with that piece of paper.
"What happens if we combine the credentials?" Vanessa asked.
Sofia answered.
"We see everything."
Anthony sat across the room under guard.
He looked twenty years older.
"Don't."
I turned.
"Why?"
"Because you can't put it back."
"What?"
"Knowledge."
He looked at me.
"Your father documented everyone. Not just enemies."
"Who?"
"Friends. Judges. businessmen. Police. Family."
"Me?"
Anthony didn't answer.
That was enough.
I looked at Vanessa.
She understood.
If Dominic had kept records on me, the ledger could destroy everything.
Companies.
Alliances.
Maybe freedom.
Anthony smiled bitterly.
"Still want truth?"
"Yes."
"Then you're more foolish than your father."
By evening, we had all three credentials.
Elias used an isolated system.
Mara entered hers.
Sofia entered hers.
Dr. Cole read his from the original envelope.
The archive unlocked.
Thousands of pages appeared.
Payments.
Properties.
Offshore entities.
Conversations.
Photographs.
Then a folder labeled MARINO.
Anthony closed his eyes.
Inside were records proving he had paid officials, sabotaged competitors, and ordered intimidation campaigns.
Enough to end his empire.
But there was more.
A file labeled BELLINI.
Inside was the payment to Rafael from ten years earlier.
Then another file.
EVA.
A transfer from Rafael to a mechanic four days before Eva's crash.
Vanessa began crying.
Anthony stared at his nephew with hatred.
Rafael said nothing.
Evidence.
Finally.
Then I saw the folder with my name.
LUCA.
I opened it.
The first page contained financial transfers I'd authorized years earlier.
Some legitimate.
Some not.
Nothing I didn't remember.
But then came something else.
A letter from my father.
Luca must never inherit this life unchanged.
I read further.
Dominic had planned to dismantle the illegal side of the family operation.
He wanted me to turn everything legitimate.
He had created legal structures to do it.
But his death stopped the plan.
Anthony interfered.
And I, believing power was the only protection left, had expanded exactly what my father had begun trying to end.
I sat back.
All those years, I'd told myself I was preserving his legacy.
I had done the opposite.
Sofia touched my shoulder.
"You didn't know."
"I should have."
"No."
"Gianna tried to tell me what I was becoming."
Vanessa stood near the window.
Our wedding was tomorrow.
Five hundred people expected us to stand before them.
Instead, Anthony was under guard.
Rafael had effectively confessed.
Federal investigator Claire Dawson was somewhere waiting.
And Dominic's ledger could destroy both families.
I looked at Vanessa.
"We still get married tomorrow."
Everyone stared at me.
Vanessa whispered, "What?"
"Publicly."
Anthony laughed.
"You're insane."
I looked at him.
"No. We're going to make sure every person who thinks this alliance protects them comes to the same place."
Elias understood first.
"A trap."
I nodded.
"Claire gets the ledger."
Anthony stood.
"You can't."
"I can."
"You'll destroy your own company."
"Then I'll rebuild."
"Your name?"
"If necessary."
"Everything your father created?"
I looked at the letter again.
"No."
I closed the laptop.
"I'll finally create what he wanted."
The next morning, the estate looked exactly as planned.
White roses.
Black cars.
Security at every gate.
Five hundred guests.
Politicians.
Executives.
Family associates.
People who believed they were attending the marriage of two powerful dynasties.
Only a handful knew the real plan.
Vanessa stood upstairs in her wedding gown.
I wore my tuxedo.
Mara held Elena in the nursery.
Sofia stayed hidden nearby.
Claire had received one message from me.
COME TO THE WEDDING. BRING WARRANTS.
At 3:58 p.m., music began.
At 4:00, Vanessa walked down the aisle.
Everyone stood.
She reached me.
Her hands trembled.
I took them.
The officiant began speaking.
Then Elias touched his earpiece.
His expression changed.
He looked at me.
"Problem."
"What?"
"The federal team isn't outside."
"Where are they?"
He glanced toward the mansion.
"Already inside."
Then every light in the ballroom went out.
A scream rose from the guests.
Emergency lights switched on.
My phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
One message.
YOU SHOULD HAVE DESTROYED THE LEDGER.
Then another.
I HAVE ELENA.
I looked toward the upstairs nursery.
The door was open.
May you like
Mara was standing in the hallway alone.
And screaming my name.
