Chapter 3 - The DNA Result

I left Mara inside the study and stepped into the hallway alone.

Vanessa stood beside her father.

Anthony Marino wore a charcoal suit and the patient expression of a man who believed every room eventually belonged to him.

"Where's Mara?" Vanessa asked.

"Busy."

Anthony smiled.

"At eleven at night?"

"She's an employee. Employees work."

Vanessa stared at the locked door behind me.

"What exactly is going on?"

I slipped my phone into my pocket.

"Nothing."

Anthony laughed.

"That word has buried more men than bullets."

"Then maybe you should stop asking questions you already know the answers to."

His smile faded.

Vanessa touched his arm.

"Dad."

Anthony looked at me for a long moment.

Then nodded.

"We'll talk tomorrow."

They walked away.

I waited until they reached the ballroom before returning to my study.

Mara stood exactly where I'd left her.

I locked the door.

Then I opened the DNA report.

The language was clinical.

Cold.

Probability of biological grandparent relationship: 99.98%.

I read it twice.

Grandparent.

Not father.

My thoughts scrambled.

My father was dead.

My mother lived in Connecticut.

Gianna had no children beyond her two sons.

I reread the result.

Then noticed the note beneath it.

Further testing recommended to identify exact relationship due to shared family markers.

I called the physician.

"You said biological relationship."

"Strong relationship," he corrected. "Based on the sample, the infant is almost certainly within your immediate bloodline."

"How?"

"I need additional samples to distinguish whether you're an uncle, half-sibling, or another close relation. You're not the father. That I can say confidently."

Relief hit first.

Then confusion.

"How quickly?"

"Tomorrow afternoon."

I disconnected.

Mara watched my face.

"What did you test?"

"Elena."

She closed her eyes.

"And me."

Her eyes opened again.

"She's family."

Mara began crying silently.

That frightened me more than panic.

"Whose?"

She sat down.

"I can't keep doing this."

"Then stop."

Her hands trembled.

"Sofia made me promise."

"Sofia has been alive for ten years and let me bury an empty coffin."

"She had reasons."

"Tell me one."

"She was pregnant."

The room shifted.

I said nothing.

Mara looked at me.

"When she disappeared, she was pregnant."

My mouth went dry.

"With my child?"

"No."

The answer came quickly.

Too quickly to be invented.

I stepped back.

"Then whose?"

"Your father's."

Silence.

I laughed once.

It wasn't humor.

"My father?"

Mara nodded.

"That makes no sense."

"It does if you know what happened before you met Sofia."

She told me then.

Slowly.

Painfully.

Years before Sofia and I met, she had worked summers at a rehabilitation clinic.

My father, Dominic Moretti, had spent months there after surgery.

Their relationship began later.

After Sofia finished school.

She was twenty-one.

My father was fifty-eight and married.

Sofia ended it.

Then met me six months later without knowing at first that I was his son.

By the time she discovered the connection, she was pregnant.

She tried to tell my father.

Someone intercepted the message.

Anthony Marino.

"Why would Anthony care?"

"Because your father had been preparing to restructure the companies."

Mara reached inside her dress pocket and removed a folded copy of a letter.

I read it.

Dominic Moretti intended to place part of his estate into trust for any child proven to be his.

Not small money.

A controlling interest in three logistics companies.

Companies Anthony wanted included in the marriage alliance.

I looked at Mara.

"Elena isn't Sofia's child."

"No."

"Then where is my father's child?"

Mara stared at me.

"Elena's mother."

My heart thudded.

"Explain."

"Sofia gave birth to a daughter."

"What was her name?"

"Eva."

I remembered the hospital bracelet.

E.E.

Elena Ellis wasn't the real identity.

"Mara."

She nodded.

"Elena is a cover name."

"What's the baby's real name?"

"Elena Moretti."

I stopped breathing for a second.

Mara continued.

"Eva Moretti grew up hidden. Sofia moved constantly. Different names. Different countries. When Eva turned eighteen, she wanted answers."

"Where is she now?"

Mara's face crumpled.

"Dead."

I stared.

"How?"

"Car accident nine months ago."

"And Elena?"

"Eva's daughter."

The room became painfully quiet.

My father's granddaughter.

My half-niece.

My blood.

A child whose existence could alter ownership of companies worth hundreds of millions.

Now the medical bill made sense.

Not because the money mattered.

Because hiding medical treatment had become difficult.

"Why bring her here?"

"Sofia disappeared again after Eva died. Elena needed heart surgery. I had no money left. Dr. Cole refused to delay treatment. I thought your house was the one place Vanessa would never search."

"You underestimated her."

"I know."

I sat behind my desk.

"Why didn't you come to me?"

"Because Sofia believed you were part of the Marino plan."

"What plan?"

"To erase every legal claim Eva had."

My anger cooled into something sharper.

"Did Anthony order Sofia's disappearance?"

Mara hesitated.

"He ordered someone to scare her."

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Did Vanessa know?"

"I don't know how much."

That mattered.

I needed facts.

Not vengeance based on guesses.

I called Elias.

"Bring Dr. Cole somewhere safe."

"Already moving."

"Good. Find everything on Sofia Bellini after her supposed death. Passports, aliases, bank accounts."

"I'm working on something else too."

"What?"

"The envelope Mara received."

Mara looked up.

Elias continued.

"We got a photo before she hid it. It contains a key."

"What kind?"

"Safe-deposit box."

"Bank?"

"Atlantic Federal."

"Number?"

"318."

Mara touched her pocket instinctively.

I held out my hand.

She stared at me.

Then slowly removed the envelope.

Inside was a brass key and a handwritten note.

For Luca only.

The handwriting stopped me.

I knew it.

Sofia.

My fingers tightened around the note.

There were only six words beneath the instruction.

Trust nobody who benefits from marriage.

I looked toward the ballroom.

Music.

Laughter.

Vanessa somewhere among the guests.

Anthony drinking my whiskey.

Celebrating an alliance that could transfer disputed companies permanently into Marino influence.

"You're not marrying her, are you?" Mara asked.

"I don't know yet."

She looked shocked.

"After everything I told you?"

"You told me what Sofia believed."

"Isn't that enough?"

"No."

I folded the note.

"I destroy people with evidence, Mara. Not emotion."

At 1:30 a.m., Gianna smuggled Elena out through the private garage.

I sent them to a house in Oyster Bay known only to Elias and me.

Mara went with them.

At 2:15, the estate finally quieted.

Vanessa came into my bedroom.

She wore one of my shirts.

Under different circumstances, I would've thought she looked beautiful.

She climbed onto the bed.

"You disappeared tonight."

"Work."

"Three days before our wedding?"

"Two now."

She smiled.

"You're counting."

"I always count."

Vanessa touched my chest.

"Promise me something."

"What?"

"Whatever happens with our families, don't let it become us against each other."

I studied her.

"Why would that happen?"

Her fingers stopped.

"It shouldn't."

"That wasn't my question."

She smiled again.

"You're impossible."

Then she kissed me.

I kissed her back.

Because sometimes the safest move is letting a liar believe they're still believed.

At dawn, I left before Vanessa woke.

Elias waited outside Atlantic Federal.

The bank manager personally opened the private vault after reviewing the key and authorization documents left under my name.

Box 318 was narrow.

Inside were three things.

A flash drive.

A sealed DNA report.

And a photograph.

I picked up the photograph first.

Sofia stood beside my father.

She was visibly pregnant.

On the back she'd written a date.

Two weeks before her disappearance.

Underneath were four words.

Anthony knows about Eva.

Elias inserted the flash drive into an isolated laptop.

One video file.

We opened it.

Sofia appeared on the screen.

Older than when I'd last seen her.

Alive.

She looked directly into the camera.

"Luca, if you're watching this, then Mara finally had no choice."

I sat down.

Sofia took a breath.

"I need you to understand something before you decide what to do."

The video shook slightly.

"The person who arranged my disappearance wasn't Anthony Marino."

I looked at Elias.

On-screen, Sofia wiped tears from her face.

"Anthony helped cover it up afterward. But he wasn't the one who started it."

She leaned closer.

"The person who ordered me removed from your life was someone you trusted more than him."

The screen went black.

A second file appeared automatically.

May you like

Its title contained one name.

GIanna_Moretti_Final.mp4.
