The Divorce I Never Signed / Chapter 5 / 7

Chapter 5 - The Mother Buried Eighteen Years Ago

Valeria stood in darkness listening to a dead woman breathe.

"Mom?"

Her voice sounded fourteen again.

The speaker clicked.

"I'm sorry."

Valeria moved toward it.

"Where are you?"

"Safe."

"Safe from whom?"

"From the people standing beside you."

Richard swore.

"Evelyn, enough."

Valeria turned.

"You can hear us?"

Evelyn laughed softly through the speakers.

"I've been listening for years."

Ethan checked the windows.

Locked electronically.

Owen remained conscious.

Richard looked less afraid of being trapped than of Evelyn talking.

Valeria faced him.

"What did you do to her?"

"Nothing."

"She said to ask you."

"Because she wants you angry."

"I'm already angry."

Richard finally broke.

"Evelyn stole twenty million dollars."

The room went silent.

"No," Valeria said.

"Yes."

Richard claimed Evelyn had created the first shell companies.

Lucas discovered them years later.

He confronted her.

She begged him to stay silent.

He refused.

On the boat, Lucas threatened to go to federal authorities.

There was a struggle.

Lucas went overboard.

Valeria looked toward the speaker.

"Mom?"

Silence.

"Tell me he's lying."

Nothing.

Then Evelyn said, "He is."

Richard laughed.

"Of course."

Evelyn's voice sharpened.

"I didn't steal Harrison's money. I moved it."

"What's the difference?"

"I was hiding it from Richard."

Richard shouted at the ceiling.

"You forged Harrison's authorization!"

"Because you were draining the company!"

Valeria closed her eyes.

Two stories.

Two accusations.

No proof.

Exactly what the mastermind wanted.

"Stop."

They did.

Valeria looked at Owen.

"Who pushed Lucas?"

Owen stared at Richard.

Richard stared at the floor.

Valeria understood.

"Richard."

"No."

"You pushed him."

"I grabbed him."

"Did he fall?"

Richard's eyes filled.

"He hit me."

"And?"

"I pushed him away."

Camille's son had grown up without a father because of one angry second.

Richard whispered, "I tried to pull him back."

Owen spoke.

"That's true."

Valeria looked at him.

"He tried."

Richard covered his face.

"Harrison blamed me. I blamed myself."

"Why wasn't there an investigation?"

"Harrison buried it."

Of course.

Harrison had protected the company again.

Just as he'd hidden Lucas.

Just as he'd hidden Evelyn.

Every lie had created another.

Valeria looked toward the speaker.

"Why did Dad tell me you were dead?"

Evelyn answered.

"Because I asked him to."

Valeria's knees weakened.

"You let your fourteen-year-old daughter bury an empty coffin?"

"I thought it would protect you."

"From what?"

"Me."

Evelyn had discovered a network stealing from Vale Urban Holdings.

She infiltrated it.

To do so, she needed to disappear.

Harrison helped fake her death.

The plan was supposed to last six months.

Then Evelyn discovered the network reached deeper than they thought.

Banks.

Lawyers.

Corporate officers.

She stayed hidden.

Months became years.

"And you never came back."

"I watched you."

"That's supposed to make it better?"

"No."

For the first time, Evelyn sounded broken.

"I know nothing can."

Valeria wiped tears from her face.

"Did you forge my divorce?"

"No."

"Who did?"

"I know who ordered it."

Everyone waited.

"Rebecca Sloan."

Valeria stared.

Rebecca?

The woman who had brought Harrison's phone.

The trusted board chair.

Evelyn explained.

Rebecca had been Harrison's business partner for decades.

She knew every trust.

Every account.

Every weakness.

Lucas had discovered payments tied to Rebecca.

So had Evelyn.

Rebecca convinced Richard that Evelyn was stealing.

She convinced Harrison that Lucas was reckless.

She convinced Owen that hiding evidence protected the family.

"She divided all of you," Valeria whispered.

"Exactly."

Just as someone had divided Valeria and Ethan.

The pattern was identical.

Valeria called Rebecca.

No answer.

Then Camille called.

Valeria picked up.

Camille was crying.

"Valeria."

"What happened?"

"Noah's gone."

Everything stopped.

"What?"

"Someone came to the apartment."

"Who?"

Camille struggled to speak.

"Rebecca."

Valeria closed her eyes.

Of course.

"She said you sent her."

"Where are you?"

"Still here."

"Are you hurt?"

"No."

"Did she take the key?"

"Yes."

The brass key.

Vault 17.

But the vault had already been opened.

Why would Rebecca need it?

Valeria remembered Harrison's letter.

The $35 million is the lock.

The key is Noah.

Maybe the brass key wasn't the real meaning.

Noah himself was.

Lucas's son.

A hidden heir.

"Rebecca needs Noah's identity," Valeria said.

Richard understood.

"If Noah is legally recognized as Lucas's son, he inherits Lucas's shares."

"How many?"

"Enough to control the company with yours."

Rebecca didn't want money.

She wanted control.

Valeria's $35 million restored the stolen assets.

Her shares plus Noah's would expose the theft and remove Rebecca.

So Rebecca had tried to destroy Valeria's marriage, isolate her, discredit Ethan, manipulate Richard, and seize Noah.

Valeria looked toward the speaker.

"Mom, where is Rebecca taking him?"

Silence.

Then:

"Where Harrison started the company."

The original warehouse.

South Side Chicago.

They drove there.

Police were notified, but Valeria insisted on entering before waiting for them.

Ethan hated it.

He came anyway.

Richard came too.

Owen went to a hospital.

The warehouse was enormous and mostly empty.

A single light burned upstairs.

They climbed.

Noah sat in a chair.

Unharmed.

Rebecca stood beside him.

Camille's brass key rested on a table.

"Let him go," Valeria said.

Rebecca smiled.

"I never intended to hurt him."

"You kidnapped him."

"I needed you here."

"Why?"

"Because Harrison left one final document."

She pointed toward a safe.

Noah's key opened it.

Inside was a sealed envelope.

Rebecca needed Valeria's biometric authorization to access the digital portion attached to it.

"What's inside?"

"The truth about your inheritance."

"I know the truth."

"No."

Rebecca's smile faded.

"You know Harrison's version."

Valeria stepped closer.

"You forged my divorce."

"Yes."

Ethan tensed.

Rebecca didn't deny it.

"Why?"

"To save you."

Valeria almost laughed.

Another person protecting her without permission.

"From Ethan?"

"From your mother."

Evelyn had spent eighteen years collecting evidence.

Rebecca claimed Evelyn wasn't exposing criminals.

She was blackmailing them.

"Your mother built an empire from secrets."

"You're lying."

"Open the safe."

Valeria did.

Inside was Harrison's final affidavit.

Signed.

Notarized.

Recorded.

She opened the accompanying video.

Her father appeared.

"Valeria, if Rebecca has brought you here, she has finally become desperate."

Rebecca's face changed.

Harrison continued.

"She will tell you Evelyn stole from me."

Valeria looked at Rebecca.

"She will tell you she forged your divorce to protect you."

Ethan almost smiled.

Harrison had predicted everything.

"Do not believe her."

Rebecca reached for the computer.

Richard blocked her.

The video continued.

"Rebecca Sloan created North Star Development twenty-one years ago. She stole the first dollar."

Rebecca's composure shattered.

"No."

"Lucas discovered it. Evelyn discovered it. I discovered it too late."

Noah watched Harrison's image.

Harrison looked into the camera.

"Rebecca, if you're seeing this, it's over."

Sirens sounded outside.

Rebecca stepped backward.

Then she smiled.

"No, Harrison."

She pulled out her phone.

"You forgot one thing."

Valeria's phone buzzed.

Every financial account connected to the inheritance began showing transfer requests.

Thirty-five million dollars.

Moving.

"Stop it," Valeria said.

Rebecca smiled.

"You can't."

"Where is it going?"

"Somewhere your father can never recover it."

Valeria looked at the transaction authorization.

Her forged signature appeared again.

But this time she saw something.

The transfer required two approvals.

One was hers.

The other—

ETHAN VANCE.

Rebecca had forged both.

Valeria looked at Ethan.

He understood.

"The divorce."

The divorce had severed Ethan's legal authority.

His forged authorization was invalid.

Rebecca hadn't stolen the inheritance.

She had destroyed her own transfer mechanism by secretly divorcing them.

Rebecca realized it too.

Her face collapsed.

Valeria smiled for the first time all night.

"You made one mistake."

Rebecca stared.

"You legally divorced me."

Police lights flooded the windows.

Rebecca ran.

Richard caught her before she reached the stairs.

Officers stormed the warehouse.

Noah ran into Ethan's arms.

Valeria thought it was over.

Then her phone rang.

Daniel Mercer.

She answered.

"Daniel?"

His voice was weak.

"Valeria, don't sign anything."

"What?"

"The inheritance."

Her smile disappeared.

"What about it?"

"I found Harrison's original trust."

Valeria looked at the envelope in her hand.

May you like

Daniel whispered:

"The $35 million was never meant for you."
