Chapter 2 - The Boy with My Father's Key

Ethan moved first.
He pushed Valeria behind him and stared at the study door.
"Stay here."
"No."
"Valeria."
"You've been lying to me for three months. You're done giving orders."
Camille held Noah close.
The mansion remained dark except for emergency lights glowing along the floor.
The study door stood open by three inches.
Ethan approached it.
Valeria followed.
He looked back.
She didn't stop.
Ethan pushed the door.
Empty.
Harrison's study looked exactly as it had before his death.
Books.
Leather chairs.
Mahogany desk.
A photograph of Valeria at seventeen.
But the window behind the desk was open.
Rain blew through it.
Someone had escaped.
Valeria switched on her phone flashlight.
A drawer hung open.
Ethan crossed the room.
"Someone searched the desk."
"For what?"
"The same thing they think you have."
"The inheritance?"
"No."
He looked at the folder.
"The instructions."
Valeria's patience broke.
"What instructions?"
Ethan leaned against the desk.
"Your father contacted me ninety-three days ago. He said someone inside Vale Urban Holdings had been moving company assets through shell corporations."
"That's corporate fraud. What does that have to do with our marriage?"
"Everything."
Harrison had apparently discovered that whoever was stealing from the company planned to use Valeria.
Her marriage gave Ethan certain potential claims and legal leverage over marital assets.
Harrison wanted those claims severed before his death.
"So you agreed to divorce me?"
"I agreed to sign a postnuptial protection agreement."
"Not a divorce."
"No."
"Then who changed it?"
"I don't know."
Valeria wanted to believe him.
That frightened her.
Camille entered carrying Noah.
"Tell her everything."
Ethan looked at her.
"Camille."
"She's already in it."
Valeria turned.
"In what?"
Camille set Noah in the leather chair.
"Harrison found evidence that someone had been forging signatures for years."
Valeria looked at her divorce decree.
"My signature."
"And your father's."
Camille had been Harrison's compliance director.
Two years earlier, she had discovered irregular transfers.
Before she could report them, someone sabotaged her car.
Noah had been inside.
Ethan, who happened to be driving behind them, pulled Noah from the wreck before the vehicle caught fire.
"That's how you know him," Valeria said.
Ethan nodded.
There had never been an affair.
Camille had disappeared from company life afterward because Harrison moved her and Noah to a protected property.
Valeria felt ashamed for what she had assumed.
But another question replaced it.
"Why did Noah call my father Grandpa Harrison?"
Camille went still.
Noah looked at his mother.
"Because Harrison asked him to."
"Why?"
Camille's eyes watered.
"I don't know."
Valeria didn't believe her.
Noah climbed down.
He walked to Harrison's desk and pointed beneath it.
"Grandpa said the key goes there."
All three adults stared.
Ethan crouched.
Under the desk was a small brass plate.
Three rotating number wheels.
Valeria entered them.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a black envelope.
Her name was written across it.
VALERIA.
She opened it.
A letter.
My darling Val,
If you are reading this, then I failed to tell you the truth while I still had time.
Do not assume the person who betrayed you is the person standing closest to you.
Your marriage had to be legally separated from the inheritance before my death. I instructed Mercer to prepare protections, but I did not authorize a divorce.
If a divorce exists, then the person I feared reached the court before I could stop them.
Trust Ethan about Camille.
Trust Camille about Noah.
Trust no one about the company.
Valeria looked up.
Ethan exhaled.
She did.
The $35 million is not the fortune.
It is the lock.
The key is Noah.
Valeria stared at the boy.
Noah smiled nervously.
"What does that mean?"
Camille looked pale.
"I don't know."
The letter continued.
Thirty-five million activates your voting shares.
Those shares grant access to Vault 17.
Vault 17 contains evidence of every stolen dollar.
If the wrong person reaches it first, everything I built will disappear.
Valeria's hands shook.
"And eleven?"
Ethan asked.
Valeria read the final line.
Eleven is the number of people who knew.
Only one betrayed me.
No name.
No explanation.
Just eleven suspects.
Daniel Mercer called.
Valeria answered immediately.
"Daniel?"
"Where are you?"
"My father's house."
"Leave."
"What happened?"
"Someone accessed my office."
Valeria tightened her grip on the phone.
"The inheritance file?"
"Gone."
She looked down.
She still held copies.
"Daniel, who knew about the trust?"
Silence.
"Eleven people."
Valeria closed her eyes.
Her father had known.
"Give me the names."
"I can't over the phone."
"Why?"
"Because one of them is Ethan Vance."
Valeria looked at Ethan.
He couldn't hear Daniel's words.
"Who else?"
Daniel began listing names.
Board members.
Executives.
Harrison's private accountant.
Camille.
Daniel himself.
Then the final name.
Richard Vale.
Valeria's uncle.
Her father's younger brother.
Richard had been running Vale Urban Holdings since Harrison's death.
He had also been the first person to hug Valeria at the funeral.
Valeria ended the call.
"Richard."
Ethan's face hardened.
"He knew?"
"Apparently."
Camille whispered, "Then we have a problem."
"What?"
"Richard controls the building where Vault 17 is located."
They left through the mansion's underground garage.
Ethan drove.
Camille and Noah took another vehicle to a safe apartment.
Valeria refused to go with them.
She wanted Vault 17.
The building was an old Vale property near the Chicago River.
Harrison had converted its basement into private document storage decades earlier.
At 11:40 p.m., Ethan and Valeria entered through a service entrance.
The guard station was empty.
Too empty.
They took the elevator down.
Floor B3.
Vault 17 waited behind a steel door.
Valeria used her inheritance authorization.
ACCESS DENIED.
Ethan tried again.
DENIED.
Then Valeria remembered Noah's brass key.
She had taken a photograph.
The engraving contained a tiny symbol beneath the numbers.
A V inside a circle.
Valeria found the same symbol beside a concealed key slot.
But they didn't have the key.
"Camille does," Ethan said.
Valeria called.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Then Camille's number called back.
Valeria answered.
A man's voice spoke.
"Mrs. Vance."
Valeria froze.
"Where is Camille?"
"Bring the inheritance documents."
"Where is Noah?"
The man chuckled.
Then Noah cried in the background.
Valeria gripped the phone.
"If you hurt him—"
"We don't want the child."
"What do you want?"
"His key."
Valeria looked at Ethan.
"Where?"
"Vault 17."
The line went dead.
Ethan swore.
"They're coming here."
"No."
Valeria stared at the vault.
"They're already here."
Footsteps sounded from the corridor.
Ethan pulled her behind a concrete pillar.
Two men appeared.
Then Camille.
Her hands were tied.
Noah was beside her.
And behind them walked Richard Vale.
Valeria stepped out.
"Uncle Richard."
Richard stopped.
He was sixty-one, gray-haired, elegant, and calm.
"Valeria."
"You kidnapped a child?"
Richard almost looked offended.
"I rescued him from a woman who has been lying to you."
Camille shouted, "Don't listen!"
One man silenced her.
Richard looked at Ethan.
"You disappoint me."
Ethan moved closer to Valeria.
"Get away from them."
Richard smiled.
"You still think you're protecting her."
"I am."
"No, Ethan."
Richard reached inside his coat.
He removed another legal document.
"You've been protecting yourself."
He handed it to Valeria.
She read the heading.
PATERNITY ACKNOWLEDGMENT.
Her eyes moved downward.
Father:
ETHAN VANCE.
Child:
NOAH ROWAN.
Valeria stopped breathing.
She looked at Ethan.
"No."
Ethan stared at the document.
"I've never seen that."
Richard smiled.
"Interesting. That's what Valeria said about her divorce."
Camille struggled against the man holding her.
"It's forged!"
"Of course you'd say that."
Valeria looked at Noah.
Then Ethan.
Same brown hair.
Same jaw?
She hated herself for noticing.
Ethan stepped toward her.
"Val, I swear."
Richard raised the brass key.
"Open Vault 17, and we'll discover who is telling the truth."
Valeria entered her authorization again.
Richard inserted Noah's key.
The lock turned.
The massive steel door opened.
Inside sat rows of boxes.
And one laptop.
The screen was already glowing.
Someone had accessed the vault before them.
Valeria walked toward it.
A video file was open.
HARRISON_VALE_FINAL.
She pressed play.
Her father appeared.
He looked exhausted.
"If Valeria is watching this, then Richard has probably told her Noah belongs to Ethan."
Richard's smile disappeared.
Harrison continued.
"That is the first lie."
Valeria turned toward Richard.
But the video wasn't finished.
"And if Richard is standing beside her, then she is in more danger than she realizes."
Richard reached for the laptop.
Ethan blocked him.
Valeria kept watching.
Her father leaned toward the camera.
"Because Richard isn't the person who forged her divorce."
The screen went black.
A second file automatically appeared.
Its title contained one name.
May you like
DANIEL MERCER.
And behind them, the vault door began to close.
