Chapter 6 - The Father Who Was Never Dead

The bedroom door opened.

A man stood there.

For a moment, I couldn't recognize him.

Not because I had never seen his face.

But because my mind refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.

The gray hair.

The tired eyes.

The scar above his eyebrow.

The face I had spent years remembering only through old photographs.

My father.

Richard Carter.

The man I buried twenty years ago.

He looked at me like he had been waiting for this moment his entire life.

"Emma."

His voice broke.

I couldn't move.

I couldn't speak.

My entire body felt frozen.

Toby looked between us.

"Mom..."

I heard him whisper.

"Is that really him?"

I wanted to answer.

But I couldn't.

Because every memory I had suddenly felt uncertain.

My father's funeral.

The hospital.

The phone call.

The people who told me he was gone.

All of it.

Was it a lie?

Richard stepped forward slowly.

"I know what you're thinking."

I finally found my voice.

"You're dead."

The words came out quietly.

He lowered his eyes.

"I know."

My hands started shaking.

"You let me believe you were dead."

A painful expression crossed his face.

"I had no choice."

I laughed bitterly.

"No choice?"

I looked around the room.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

Daniel.

Linda.

Now him.

"Everyone had a reason to lie to me."

Richard looked at Daniel.

Then his expression changed.

"You married her."

Daniel said nothing.

My father looked back at me.

"That was the one thing I was afraid of."

My heart sank.

"What does that mean?"

Nobody answered.

And that terrified me more.

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew he was alive."

Daniel looked away.

That was his answer.

I felt something inside me break.

The betrayal wasn't just about the insurance policy anymore.

It wasn't just about the money.

It was about my entire life.

Everyone around me had known a secret about me.

Everyone except me.

Richard stepped closer.

"Emma, please listen."

I stepped back.

"No."

My voice became stronger.

"I spent years believing I lost my father."

Tears filled my eyes.

"I visited a grave."

Richard closed his eyes.

"I know."

"I cried over someone who wasn't even there."

"I know."

"Do you know what that did to me?"

His face showed pain.

"I know."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You don't."

The room became silent.

Then Toby walked beside me.

He took my hand.

My son.

The only person who had told me the truth.

Even when it hurt.

Richard looked at him.

"You must be Toby."

My son stared at him.

"How do you know my name?"

Richard looked sad.

"Because I have watched you grow up."

My heart stopped.

"What?"

Richard looked at me.

"I never stopped watching."

I felt anger rising again.

"You watched?"

My voice shook.

"You watched me get married. You watched me have a child. You watched me live with Daniel."

He lowered his head.

"Yes."

"And you did nothing?"

Richard didn't answer.

That silence was painful.

Then Linda spoke.

"Emma, your father was trying to protect you."

I turned toward her.

"From what?"

Nobody spoke.

I looked at Daniel.

"Tell me."

He stayed silent.

I walked closer.

"Tell me the truth."

Finally, Daniel looked at me.

"The insurance policies weren't created because of your money."

I frowned.

"What?"

"They were created because someone wanted you gone."

My blood went cold.

"Who?"

Daniel looked at Richard.

Richard looked away.

That reaction told me everything.

They knew.

They all knew.

Daniel continued.

"Your father discovered something before he disappeared."

"What?"

"A group of people were using your identity."

I stared at him.

"My identity?"

Richard nodded.

"When you were young, your mother discovered financial records connected to powerful people."

"My mother?"

I felt dizzy.

"My mother knew?"

Richard nodded.

"She was the first person who tried to expose them."

"And?"

His eyes became darker.

"She didn't survive."

The room went silent.

I felt my chest tighten.

My mother had died when I was a teenager.

Everyone told me it was an accident.

A car crash.

A terrible accident.

But now...

I looked at Richard.

"That wasn't an accident."

He didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Toby looked at the flash drive.

"So what's on the file?"

Everyone turned.

Richard's expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

Toby held it tightly.

"Dad's laptop."

Richard immediately stepped forward.

"You need to destroy that."

I froze.

"Why?"

His face showed real fear.

"Because that file contains the names of everyone involved."

Linda whispered:

"And if they know you have it..."

She didn't finish.

She didn't need to.

A sound came from downstairs.

A crash.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward the hallway.

"They're already here."

My heart jumped.

"Who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Instead, he moved toward the window.

Outside, several cars were parked.

Men were getting out.

Not police.

Not neighbors.

People who moved with purpose.

Richard looked at me.

"We need to leave now."

I stared at him.

"You don't get to disappear again."

His eyes filled with regret.

"I know."

"Then tell me everything."

He looked at the door.

"They don't give people like me time to explain."

A loud sound echoed downstairs.

The front door had been forced open.

Toby stepped closer.

"Mom."

I grabbed his hand.

Richard moved toward the closet.

"There's another way out."

I stared at him.

"You knew about this house?"

He stopped.

Then said:

"I built this house."

I froze.

"What?"

Richard looked at me.

"Daniel didn't choose this home."

My eyes moved to Daniel.

He looked guilty.

"He chose you."

The words hit me.

Before I could ask what he meant, the lights suddenly went out.

Not because of us.

Someone had cut the power.

Again.

Just like the beginning of the night.

Darkness covered the room.

Then a voice came from downstairs.

A voice I recognized.

Rachel.

"Emma."

My blood turned cold.

"Come out."

Nobody moved.

Rachel continued.

"You deserve to know why Daniel married you."

I looked at Daniel.

His face changed.

Rachel laughed softly.

"Because he was never supposed to love you."

The words echoed through the house.

Then another voice spoke.

A man's voice.

Older.

Calm.

Familiar.

Richard's face turned pale.

I looked at him.

"Who is that?"

He whispered:

"Your grandfather."

My heart stopped.

"My grandfather died before I was born."

Richard looked terrified.

"No."

A pause.

"He was the person who started all of this."

The bedroom door suddenly moved.

Someone was standing outside.

A shadow appeared beneath the door.

Then the handle slowly turned.

May you like

And a voice whispered:

"Emma, it's time you learned who you really are."
