Chapter 5 - The Truth Behind My Name

The screen went black.

The file called "Emma's Original Identity" disappeared.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Nobody spoke.

I stared at Toby's phone, waiting for the video to return.

But it didn't.

Instead, a small message appeared.

"Access denied."

Someone had taken control.

Someone had stopped us from seeing the truth.

Daniel stood in the doorway, watching us.

And for the first time that night, I saw something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not guilt.

Not regret.

Fear.

He wasn't afraid because we knew.

He was afraid because we were close to discovering something he had buried for years.

"What did you see?"

Daniel asked.

His voice was calm.

Too calm.

I looked at him.

The man standing in front of me was the same man who used to make coffee for me every morning.

The same man who held my hand when Toby was born.

The same man who promised me that nothing would ever separate our family.

But now I saw him differently.

I saw the person behind the mask.

"You tell me."

My voice surprised even me.

Daniel looked at me silently.

"What exactly are you hiding?"

He didn't answer.

That silence was enough.

Toby stepped forward.

"You knew about Mom's identity."

Daniel looked at him.

"Toby."

"No."

My son shook his head.

"You don't get to say my name like everything is normal."

The anger in his voice broke my heart.

For weeks, maybe months, he had carried this alone.

He had discovered the truth about his father and still came home every day pretending everything was fine.

Daniel looked at the flash drive.

"You have no idea what you found."

Toby laughed.

"Then explain it."

Daniel didn't.

Instead, he looked at Linda.

"You brought her here."

Linda stared back.

"I came because she deserved to know."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"After everything I did to protect her?"

I felt a sharp pain in my chest.

Protect me?

Was that what he called this?

The lies?

The insurance policies?

The syringe?

I stepped closer.

"Protect me from what, Daniel?"

His eyes moved to mine.

For a moment, I thought he would finally tell me.

I thought maybe there was an explanation.

Something impossible but real.

Something that could make the last few hours disappear.

But then he said:

"From the people who created you."

The room became silent.

I frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Daniel looked away.

Linda spoke quietly.

"It means you were never just Emma Carter."

I stared at her.

"What?"

She looked at me with sadness.

"Your name wasn't always Emma."

I felt dizzy.

"My name..."

Linda nodded.

"When you were twenty-two years old, your entire life was changed."

I looked at Daniel.

"You knew?"

He didn't deny it.

That hurt more than any confession.

"You knew who I was before I met you."

Daniel looked down.

"Yes."

The word cut deeper than I expected.

Fourteen years.

Fourteen years knowing something about me that I didn't know myself.

"Why?"

My voice cracked.

"Why would you marry someone if you were hiding the truth about them?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Linda did.

"Because of your father."

My heart stopped.

"My father?"

I hadn't heard that name connected to anything mysterious before.

My father had died when I was young.

At least, that's what I believed.

Linda reached into her bag.

She pulled out another envelope.

"This was hidden in the same file."

She handed it to Toby.

He opened it carefully.

Inside was a copy of an old document.

I looked at the top.

Birth records.

But the name wasn't Emma Carter.

It was another name.

A name I had never seen before.

I felt like the world was moving around me.

"That's impossible."

Linda shook her head.

"No."

She pointed at the paper.

"That's the person you were before Daniel changed everything."

I looked at Daniel.

"Changed everything?"

His face became tense.

"I was trying to keep you alive."

I almost laughed.

"By putting a $24 million insurance policy on me?"

His eyes moved away.

That was the first time he looked ashamed.

Toby noticed.

"You didn't protect her."

He said quietly.

"You owned her."

Daniel looked at him.

And something changed.

His calm disappeared.

"Be careful what you think you understand."

Toby stepped forward.

"I understand enough."

Daniel walked closer.

Linda immediately moved between them.

"Don't."

Daniel stopped.

For a moment, nobody moved.

Then his phone rang.

He looked at the screen.

The color disappeared from his face.

A name appeared.

A name that made him afraid.

He answered.

"Yes?"

Silence.

Then:

"No. That's impossible."

We all watched him.

His hand tightened around the phone.

"What do you mean he's awake?"

My blood went cold.

He's awake.

Who was he talking about?

Daniel listened.

Then slowly looked at me.

His expression changed.

Not anger.

Not fear.

Shock.

"Emma..."

I stared at him.

"What?"

He lowered the phone.

"The person who can explain everything..."

A pause.

"Your father is alive."

The room stopped.

I couldn't understand the words.

My father.

Alive?

No.

That wasn't possible.

I had attended his funeral.

I remembered the flowers.

The people crying.

The empty feeling of losing him.

Daniel looked at Linda.

"You knew."

Linda didn't answer.

That was all I needed.

She knew.

Everyone knew.

Except me.

I stepped back.

"How long?"

Linda's eyes filled with tears.

"Since before you met Daniel."

My knees almost gave out.

I grabbed the edge of the table.

Fourteen years.

My entire marriage.

My entire life.

Built on secrets.

Daniel looked at Toby.

"Give me the drive."

Toby held it tighter.

"No."

Daniel's voice became colder.

"You don't understand what's on there."

"Then tell us."

Silence.

Daniel looked at me.

Then he said something I would never forget.

"Your father wasn't hiding from you."

A pause.

"He was hiding you."

I felt a chill.

"From who?"

Daniel didn't answer.

Because suddenly, we heard something.

A car stopping outside.

Everyone froze.

Linda looked toward the window.

Her face turned pale.

"No..."

I looked at her.

"What?"

She whispered:

"They found us."

The lights outside moved across the walls.

A vehicle had stopped in front of the house.

Then another.

Then another.

Toby moved toward the window.

I grabbed his arm.

"Don't."

But he looked anyway.

And the moment he saw who was standing outside, his face changed.

"Mom..."

I looked at him.

"What is it?"

He turned slowly.

His voice barely came out.

"It's the man from the video."

I stared at the window.

The front door downstairs opened.

Footsteps entered the house.

Someone walked inside like they owned the place.

Then a familiar voice called my name.

"Emma..."

The bedroom door handle slowly turned.

May you like

And the person standing outside whispered:

"Your father has been waiting for you."
