Chapter 6 - The House They Thought They Owned

The message remained on the screen.

Your husband's brother is alive.

I read it again.

Then again.

Seven years of memories suddenly felt like they had been built on a lie.

My husband's funeral.

The condolences.

The phone calls.

The empty chair at the dinner table.

Everything.

I looked at Daniel.

"Is that possible?"

He didn't answer immediately.

That scared me.

Because Daniel always had an answer.

He knew the law.

He knew the finances.

He knew every secret my husband trusted him with.

But this time, he looked just as shocked as I was.

"I don't know," he finally said.

"You don't know?"

He shook his head.

"Your husband's brother disappeared before I ever became involved with the family."

I stared at the phone.

"But my husband told me he was dead."

Daniel looked at the photograph again.

"Did he?"

The question made me uncomfortable.

I searched my memory.

The years before my husband's death.

The conversations.

The arguments.

The things he refused to explain.

My husband had never actually said:

"My brother died."

He only said:

"He's gone."

At the time, I assumed I understood.

Now I wasn't sure.

Daniel closed the email.

"We need to find out who sent this."

I nodded.

But before we could move, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

Again.

I answered.

"Hello?"

For several seconds, there was only silence.

Then a man's voice spoke.

Older.

Tired.

But familiar.

"Margaret."

My hand tightened around the phone.

"Who is this?"

A deep breath.

Then:

"Someone who should have called you years ago."

I stood still.

"Tell me your name."

Another pause.

"My name is Thomas."

My heart stopped.

Because that was the name.

The name I hadn't heard spoken in years.

My husband's brother.

"Thomas?"

The voice became quieter.

"Your husband tried to protect you."

I looked at Daniel.

"From what?"

Silence.

Then:

"From the people closest to him."

My eyes moved to the documents on the table.

To Ethan's name.

To Victoria's name.

To all the secrets that had been buried.

"Why did you disappear?"

The man on the phone breathed heavily.

"Because someone wanted me gone."

"Who?"

Before he could answer, the call ended.

I stared at the phone.

Daniel immediately said:

"Did he say anything else?"

I shook my head.

"Only that my husband was protecting me."

Daniel walked toward the window.

"Margaret."

I looked at him.

"Your husband may have known this day was coming."

I sat down slowly.

For years, I believed my husband left me with grief.

Now I wondered if he left me with a warning.

A few hours later, Daniel and I met with the legal team handling the trust.

The room was full of documents.

Contracts.

Financial records.

Evidence.

Everything connected to the life I had spent building.

But for the first time, money wasn't what mattered.

The truth was.

The attorney placed a folder on the table.

"Ethan's legal team filed an emergency motion."

I looked at her.

"To access the trust?"

She nodded.

"They claim you are mentally unstable and unable to manage your own assets."

I almost laughed.

Mentally unstable.

The same phrase people used when they wanted to silence someone.

"What evidence do they have?"

She opened another folder.

Inside were medical records.

I frowned.

"These aren't mine."

The attorney looked serious.

"No."

She turned the page.

"They are Ethan's."

I looked closer.

The records showed therapy sessions.

Private conversations.

And one repeated statement.

"Ethan believes his mother is hiding financial information from him."

I stared at the paper.

"He was documenting me?"

The attorney nodded.

"But there is something strange."

"What?"

"These documents were submitted before the incident at the mansion."

I looked up.

Before.

Meaning this was planned.

Not an accident.

Not a moment of anger.

A plan.

Daniel looked at me.

"Margaret..."

I already understood.

Ethan didn't suddenly become cruel.

He had been preparing for something.

My phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

A video file.

No text.

I looked at Daniel.

He nodded.

"Open it."

I pressed play.

The screen showed Ethan.

Not the Ethan from last night.

A younger Ethan.

Standing in my husband's office.

The date appeared.

Three years earlier.

My breath caught.

Because my son wasn't alone.

Victoria was there.

And sitting across from them...

was my husband's brother.

Thomas.

Alive.

I turned the volume up.

Ethan's voice filled the room.

"I just need to know where the money is."

Victoria answered.

"Your mother will never tell you."

Thomas laughed softly.

"Because she doesn't know the truth."

I froze.

What truth?

The video continued.

Ethan leaned forward.

"Then tell me."

Thomas looked directly at the camera.

And for a moment, it felt like he was looking at me.

"The money isn't your biggest problem."

Ethan frowned.

"Then what is?"

Thomas said something that made my entire body go cold.

"Your father didn't leave everything to you because he never trusted you."

The video stopped.

I stared at the frozen image.

My son.

Victoria.

Thomas.

All connected.

All hiding something.

Daniel slowly said:

"We need to find Thomas."

I nodded.

But before we could do anything, my phone rang.

This time, it was Ethan.

I answered.

"What do you want?"

His voice was shaking.

"Mom, I need you to listen carefully."

I didn't speak.

"Victoria lied to me."

I closed my eyes.

Those words were the first honest thing he had said.

"What happened?"

"I found something."

"What?"

Silence.

Then:

"She has another account."

I looked at Daniel.

"An account with what?"

Ethan's voice dropped.

"Money."

"How much?"

Another pause.

"More than I thought."

I waited.

"Mom..."

His voice cracked.

"I think she was using me."

I wanted to believe him.

A part of me still wanted my son to be saved.

But trust was not something that returned because someone finally became afraid.

"Where are you?"

He hesitated.

"At the house."

I frowned.

"The mansion?"

"Yes."

"Why are you there?"

Silence.

Then he whispered:

"Because someone broke in."

My grip tightened.

"Who?"

"I don't know."

"Ethan, leave."

"I can't."

"Why?"

His breathing became uneven.

"Because they left something for me."

"What?"

He didn't answer.

Then I heard a sound.

A door opening.

"Ethan?"

His voice became distant.

"Mom..."

I stood.

"What is happening?"

A few seconds passed.

Then he whispered:

"I found the room."

My heart stopped.

"What room?"

The line went silent.

Then I heard Ethan say one sentence.

The sentence that changed everything.

"The room my father told me never to open."

The call dropped.

At that exact moment, Daniel's computer received a new alert.

A security image appeared.

It showed Ethan standing inside the mansion.

Behind him was a hidden doorway.

May you like

And someone was standing inside.

Someone who had been waiting for him.
