Chapter 8 - The Man Behind the Door

Clara couldn't speak.
Her father was alive.
That sentence destroyed everything she thought she knew.
Robert ended the call.
"Who was that?"
"Dr. Hale."
"What did he mean?"
Robert looked at Clara.
"I don't know."
"You do."
Robert shook his head.
"Not everything."
Clara stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Robert sighed.
"Your father entered witness protection after your mother's death."
Clara's mouth fell open.
"He left me?"
"He believed staying near you would put you in danger."
"You all decided my life without telling me."
"I know."
She turned toward David.
"And you knew?"
"Only recently."
"How recently?"
"Months ago."
Clara laughed bitterly.
"Months."
David lowered his head.
"I wanted to tell you."
"But you didn't."
"No."
She walked toward the window.
For years, she had believed she was alone.
Now she realized everyone had been keeping secrets around her.
Her phone rang.
A hospital number.
She answered.
"Hello?"
"Mrs. Whitmore?"
"Yes."
"This is Vancouver General Hospital."
Her heart stopped.
"Is my husband okay?"
There was silence.
"Your husband has left the hospital."
"I know."
"There's another issue."
"What?"
"Someone accessed his medical records."
"Who?"
"We don't know."
Clara looked at Michael.
"Can you trace it?"
He nodded.
The hospital representative continued.
"One of the access attempts came from a terminal registered to Dr. Richard Hale."
Clara closed her eyes.
"Thank you."
She ended the call.
Michael turned toward the laptop.
"There's something in the files."
"What?"
"A financial transfer."
He opened it.
Money had moved from a medical corporation to an account under a false identity.
The recipient was unknown.
But the destination was a private facility in British Columbia.
Clara stared.
"What's there?"
"We need to find out."
They drove to the facility.
It was an old rehabilitation center.
A nurse met them at the entrance.
"Can I help you?"
Clara showed her the documents.
"We're looking for someone."
The nurse studied the page.
Then her expression changed.
"I know him."
"Who?"
"Your father."
Clara stopped breathing.
"He's here?"
The nurse nodded.
"He's been living under another name."
Clara stepped forward.
"Take me to him."
The nurse hesitated.
"He's very ill."
"I don't care."
The nurse looked at Michael.
Then nodded.
They entered a quiet room.
An elderly man sat beside the window.
Gray hair.
Thin face.
A blanket over his shoulders.
Clara stopped.
She recognized him.
Not because of his face.
Because of his eyes.
"Dad?"
The man turned.
His eyes filled with tears.
"Clara."
She couldn't move.
For a moment, she was four years old again.
Running toward him.
Then she remembered everything.
"You let me believe you were dead."
"I had to."
"You let me grieve you."
"I thought it was the only way."
"Everyone always has a reason."
Her father looked down.
"I'm sorry."
Clara's anger finally broke through.
"You all decided I couldn't handle the truth."
"I was trying to protect you."
"From what?"
He looked toward the door.
"From Hale."
"Why?"
"Because your mother discovered what he was doing."
He explained.
Hale had manipulated medical records for years.
He had used falsified documentation to hide negligence and financial fraud.
Margaret discovered it.
She gathered evidence.
Hale threatened her.
David helped her.
Robert became involved.
Clara's father tried to expose the network.
Then everything collapsed.
Margaret died.
David disappeared from the investigation.
Her father went into hiding.
Clara was left behind.
Her father reached into a drawer.
He pulled out a small envelope.
"Your mother left this for you."
Clara took it.
On the front:
For Clara, when she is finally safe.
She opened it.
Inside was a handwritten letter.
Her mother's voice seemed to return through the words.
My darling Clara, if you're reading this, then the people who tried to bury the truth have failed.
Clara cried silently.
The letter continued.
Never believe that my death was your fault.
She pressed the paper to her chest.
And never let anyone convince you that money is more important than the people you love.
Clara looked at her father.
"Why didn't you give me this?"
"I wasn't sure when you would be safe."
She wiped her tears.
"I am safe now."
Her father shook his head.
"No."
Clara frowned.
"What?"
He pointed toward the letter.
"Read the last line."
She looked down.
Her mother's final sentence was:
The person who betrayed us is still alive.
Clara looked up.
"Who?"
Her father whispered:
"Someone you already know."
Then the facility's fire alarm suddenly began screaming.
The lights went out.
Someone shouted from the hallway.
Michael grabbed Clara's arm.
"Stay behind me."
A door slammed somewhere nearby.
Then Clara heard a man's voice in the darkness.
"Clara."
She knew it.
It was David.
But another voice answered from behind him.
"She's mine now."
Clara froze.
May you like
The emergency lights flickered on.
Dr. Richard Hale stood at the end of the hallway—
