Chapter 7 - The Wedding Album

Clara returned home under police protection.
She hadn't been inside the house for months.
Every room looked familiar.
Yet nothing felt the same.
She walked upstairs.
The wedding album was exactly where she remembered it.
A white box.
Covered in dust.
She placed it on the bed.
Michael stood behind her.
Robert waited in the doorway.
Clara opened the album.
Photographs.
Her wedding.
David smiling.
Clara laughing.
Her mother standing beside her.
Clara touched the photograph.
For years, she'd looked at it and remembered happiness.
Now she wondered how much of that happiness had been real.
She lifted the final page.
Nothing.
Then she noticed the binding.
A small tear.
She pulled it gently.
A hidden envelope slid out.
Inside was a folded document.
The original authorization form.
Clara's hands shook.
Michael examined it.
"The signature."
She looked.
Dr. Hale.
Then another name.
Robert.
Then David.
Clara looked at her uncle.
"Why are all three names here?"
Robert didn't answer.
Michael examined the dates.
"This isn't an authorization."
"What is it?"
"It's a transfer order."
"For what?"
"Medical records."
Clara frowned.
"Where?"
Michael turned the page.
"Vancouver."
Clara's heart stopped.
Her mother had been moved to Vancouver before her death.
But no one had told Clara.
She read the next line.
Patient transfer approved under emergency authority.
Below it was a handwritten note.
Patient's daughter must not be informed.
Clara recognized the handwriting.
David.
She stepped backward.
"He lied."
Robert shook his head.
"To protect you."
"No."
Clara's voice broke.
"He took my mother away without telling me."
"He believed you were in danger."
"He had no right."
"I know."
Clara looked at the document again.
There was one more page.
A list of names.
Doctors.
Administrators.
Insurance executives.
Hospital board members.
At the bottom:
Primary organizer: Richard Hale.
Clara exhaled.
The truth was finally taking shape.
Then the front door downstairs slammed.
Everyone froze.
Michael reached for his phone.
Robert whispered:
"He's here."
"Who?"
Robert looked at Clara.
"David."
Footsteps moved through the house.
Slow.
Heavy.
Then David appeared at the staircase.
He was still injured.
His hospital clothing was visible beneath a dark coat.
Emily stood behind him with her wrist in a brace.
Clara stared.
"How did you get here?"
David looked exhausted.
"I left the hospital."
"You're injured."
"I had to come."
Clara held up the document.
"You lied to me."
David nodded.
"Yes."
"About my mother."
"Yes."
"About Emily."
"Yes."
"About Vancouver."
"Yes."
Clara's eyes filled with tears.
"Was any of our marriage real?"
David looked at her.
"Every moment."
She looked away.
"I don't know how to believe you."
"You don't have to."
He stepped closer.
"I brought you proof."
Emily handed Michael a flash drive.
"Everything we've collected."
Michael plugged it into a laptop.
Files appeared.
Audio recordings.
Emails.
Financial transfers.
Medical records.
Clara watched in silence.
One recording showed Dr. Hale speaking to a hospital administrator.
"We can't let Margaret Whitmore testify."
Another showed Robert.
"I'll handle the daughter."
Clara looked at Robert.
He lowered his head.
"You knew."
"I was trying to protect you."
"You lied."
"Yes."
David stepped forward.
"I made the same mistake."
Clara looked at him.
"Why did you threaten Lily's hospital bill?"
David swallowed.
"Because I needed you to believe I was still the man you feared."
Clara stared.
"You were willing to make me hate you."
"If it kept you alive."
Emily spoke quietly.
"We thought Hale had someone inside your family."
Clara looked at her.
"And the accident?"
Emily's face changed.
"It wasn't an accident."
Silence.
David nodded.
"Our brakes were tampered with."
Clara's stomach turned.
"By Hale?"
"We don't know yet."
Michael stopped the recording.
"There is something else."
Everyone looked at him.
He opened another file.
It was a video.
Dr. Hale.
Speaking to someone off camera.
"I already handled Margaret."
The room went silent.
Then the voice of the person behind the camera spoke.
Clara recognized it immediately.
Her father's voice.
"No one will ever know."
Clara's face went white.
"My father?"
Robert whispered:
"He was involved."
David looked at Clara.
"That's why I never told you."
Clara couldn't breathe.
Her father had died six years ago.
Everyone she had trusted was connected to the same secret.
Then Michael paused the video.
"There is one more file."
He clicked.
A scanned page appeared.
At the bottom was a handwritten note from Margaret.
The person I feared most is not Hale.
Clara leaned closer.
The next sentence appeared.
It's someone who still calls Clara his daughter.
Clara stared.
Her father was already dead.
So who was left?
Then Robert's phone began ringing.
He looked at the screen.
His face drained of color.
Clara stepped closer.
"Who is it?"
Robert couldn't answer.
The caller ID displayed a name.
Richard Hale.
The phone stopped.
Then immediately began ringing again.
Robert finally answered.
A man's voice came through.
"Robert."
Clara heard it clearly.
Then the voice said:
"Tell Clara her father didn't die six years ago."
May you like
The room went silent.
"He is still alive."
