Chapter 4 - The Dead Woman’s Notebook

Grace’s instinct was to step forward.

Adrian’s hand stopped her.

Daniel pressed the gun harder against Luca.

“No one moves.”

Luca grimaced.

Blood spread between his fingers.

Adrian’s voice was calm.

“What happened?”

Daniel laughed without humor.

“You still think you’re the one asking questions.”

“Daniel,” Grace said.

His eyes shifted to her.

That tiny movement revealed fear.

Not madness.

Not hatred.

Fear.

Grace took a careful breath.

“You came to us for help.”

“I came because I thought he didn’t know.”

He nodded toward Adrian.

“Know what?”

“That his family built part of its fortune using companies Victoria now controls.”

Adrian stared at him.

“My father’s companies.”

“Don’t separate yourself so quickly.”

“I spent fifteen years dismantling those structures.”

“And how many people got hurt before you did?”

Adrian did not answer.

Grace looked at Luca.

“Why are you bleeding?”

Luca gave a strained smile.

“Daniel has poor conflict-resolution skills.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“You followed me.”

“You stole files from my company.”

“To expose Victoria.”

“To expose everyone.”

Daniel shouted, “Someone has to!”

His voice echoed through the garage.

Grace raised both hands.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“My mother trusted Adrian.”

Daniel’s face shifted.

“You read the notebook.”

“Yes.”

“She shouldn’t have trusted anyone.”

“Maybe. But she wrote something else.”

Grace looked down at the notebook.

Near the circled sentence was another line.

L.M. KNOWS, BUT I DON’T THINK HE CHOSE THIS.

Grace looked at Luca.

“What did she mean?”

Luca’s face lost color.

Adrian turned toward him.

“Luca.”

Luca swallowed.

“Not here.”

Grace almost screamed.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Daniel’s gun shook.

“Tell her.”

Luca looked at Grace.

“My father handled certain accounts for Adrian’s father.”

Grace knew Luca’s father, Salvatore, had died six years earlier.

“He used charities?”

“Yes.”

“Carter House?”

“Not originally.”

“Then how?”

“Victoria discovered the old structure and recreated it.”

Grace stared.

“With your help?”

“No.”

Daniel pushed the gun against him.

“Lie again.”

“I didn’t help her steal.”

“You signed documents.”

“I signed documents I thought were vendor transfers.”

Daniel laughed.

“You expect anyone to believe that?”

Luca’s voice hardened.

“I was twenty-nine. My father put papers in front of me. I signed them.”

Adrian looked furious.

“You never told me.”

“I was ashamed.”

“You let me put you in charge of compliance.”

“I spent eleven years cleaning it.”

“Without telling me why.”

“Yes.”

Grace watched them.

Two men raised like brothers.

Trust collapsing by inches.

Daniel said, “Victoria found those old signatures. She used them to control him.”

Grace understood.

“Blackmail.”

Luca nodded.

“She threatened to release everything and make it look current.”

“How long?”

“Two years.”

Adrian’s face went still.

“Two years?”

“Yes.”

“Our entire marriage,” Grace whispered.

Luca looked at her.

“I’m sorry.”

Grace’s mind raced backward.

Anonymous donations.

Strange problems at Carter House.

Adrian arriving unexpectedly when Grace received threats that seemed meaningless at the time.

“Did Victoria know I was Adrian’s wife?”

Luca hesitated.

Grace went cold.

“She knew.”

“Yes.”

Adrian’s expression became lethal.

Grace remembered Victoria’s words.

I had no idea you were Adrian’s wife.

A lie.

The humiliation had not been spontaneous.

It had been deliberate.

The spill.

The torn blouse.

The public degradation.

Victoria had known exactly who Grace was.

“Why?” Grace asked.

Luca answered.

“She wanted Adrian to react publicly.”

Daniel slowly lowered the gun.

Adrian said, “For what?”

“To destroy the Sterling-Moretti merger.”

Grace frowned.

“What merger?”

Adrian looked at her.

“A proposed acquisition.”

Victoria’s company was supposed to merge a major hospitality portfolio into Moretti Group.

Midnight.

Daniel had mentioned it.

Luca continued.

“If you publicly threatened Victoria, she could withdraw and claim coercion. Her board would support her. She’d keep control of the financial network.”

Grace looked around.

“So tonight was a trap for Adrian.”

Luca nodded.

“And I was the bait.”

“Yes.”

Grace thought of the cameras.

The phones.

Three hundred witnesses.

Victoria had wanted footage of Adrian Moretti becoming the monster newspapers already believed he was.

Instead, he had covered Grace with his jacket.

Asked Victoria to apologize.

Stayed controlled.

Victoria’s plan had failed.

Daniel lowered his weapon completely.

“I didn’t know.”

Luca turned suddenly and punched Daniel.

The gun skidded across the concrete.

Marcus rushed forward.

Grace shouted, “Stop!”

Luca nearly collapsed from the movement.

Adrian caught him.

For one strange second, everything became human again.

Not conspiracy.

Not power.

A cousin holding another cousin upright.

“Hospital,” Adrian said.

Luca shook his head.

“After midnight.”

“You’re bleeding.”

“Then I’ll bleed efficiently.”

Grace would have laughed under any other circumstances.

Adrian did not.

They moved Luca into a private security room.

Marcus brought a medic from Adrian’s team.

The wound was shallow.

A knife cut, not gunshot.

Daniel had not caused it.

One of Victoria’s men had.

That changed the atmosphere.

Daniel explained that after Elena was struck unconscious, two masked men entered the accounting office. Daniel escaped through a side door with the card. Luca intercepted him in the garage. Before either understood the other’s intentions, Victoria’s men attacked.

One escaped.

The other took the memory card.

But Evelyn’s notebook remained.

Grace sat at a metal desk reading every page.

Her mother’s handwriting transformed the past.

Evelyn had discovered suspicious invoices accidentally.

She confronted a Sterling accountant.

Two days later, Carter House lost a major grant.

Then someone followed her.

She contacted Adrian because one invoice listed a Moretti subsidiary.

Adrian helped quietly.

He hired an auditor.

He found irregularities.

Then Evelyn died.

Afterward, the records disappeared.

Grace reached the final page.

There was a taped envelope.

Her name was written across it.

GRACIE.

Her mother had always called her that.

Grace’s hands shook.

She opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My Gracie,

If you are reading this, then either I finally became brave enough to tell you everything, or I waited too long.

Grace stopped.

Tears blurred the page.

Adrian sat across from her.

He did not speak.

She continued.

Evelyn wrote that she had discovered money moving through Carter House.

She feared exposing it would destroy the center.

She feared silence would make her complicit.

She had contacted Adrian because she believed he was trying to correct his father’s mistakes.

Then came the line that made Grace look at him.

Adrian frightens people because he learned young that fear keeps danger at a distance. But I have watched how he looks at you. Never confuse a guarded man with a heartless one.

Grace’s throat closed.

Her mother had known.

Before the courthouse wedding.

Before Grace had admitted to herself how much she loved Adrian.

The letter continued.

If you choose him, make him tell you the truth. Every truth. Love cannot survive behind locked doors.

Grace let the letter fall into her lap.

Adrian looked away.

The words had struck him too.

“You should have shown me this,” Grace whispered.

“I never saw it.”

She believed him.

The envelope had been sealed.

Luca said, “Evelyn gave the notebook to my father’s old attorney. Daniel found it after the attorney died.”

Daniel nodded.

“I didn’t know the letter was inside.”

Grace folded it carefully.

“What do we do now?”

Adrian answered.

“We stop the merger.”

Daniel shook his head.

“That doesn’t expose her.”

Grace looked at him.

“He’s right.”

Adrian frowned.

“If we stop it, she keeps the network.”

“So we let her think she won.”

Everyone stared at Grace.

She stood.

“Victoria wanted Adrian angry.”

“Yes,” Luca said.

“She wanted him unstable.”

“Yes.”

“She wants control of the room at midnight.”

Grace slowly removed Adrian’s jacket.

She placed it over the chair.

“Then we give her the room.”

Adrian understood first.

“No.”

Grace smiled faintly.

“You haven’t even heard the plan.”

“I know that smile.”

“What smile?”

“The one you get before doing something reckless.”

Luca muttered, “She really is your wife.”

Grace ignored him.

“Victoria thinks I’m humiliated. She thinks I’m emotional. She thinks I’m dependent on you.”

Adrian crossed his arms.

“And?”

“And she thinks wrong.”

At 11:42 p.m., Grace returned to the gala alone.

She wore a replacement server uniform.

Fresh white blouse.

Blue apron.

Hair still neatly pinned.

No diamonds.

No expensive dress.

No Moretti jacket.

The room turned toward her.

Victoria stood near the stage.

Surprise flashed across her face.

Grace picked up a tray of champagne.

Then she walked directly toward Victoria.

“Ms. Sterling.”

Victoria smiled.

“You came back to work?”

“Yes.”

“How admirable.”

Grace offered the tray.

Victoria took a glass.

Grace leaned closer.

“My mother left you something.”

Victoria’s hand stopped.

The smile vanished.

Grace placed a photocopied page from Evelyn’s notebook beneath Victoria’s champagne glass.

One sentence was visible.

I KNOW WHO AUTHORIZED THE TRANSFERS.

Victoria stared at it.

Then at Grace.

“What do you want?”

Grace whispered, “The truth.”

Victoria glanced toward the stage clock.

11:47.

“Come with me.”

She turned.

Grace followed her through a private door behind the ballroom.

Exactly as planned.

Adrian watched through a hidden camera feed from the security room.

Luca watched beside him.

Daniel leaned toward the monitor.

Victoria led Grace into a private bridal suite.

She locked the door.

Grace’s hidden microphone transmitted clearly.

Victoria faced her.

“You should have left Manhattan when your mother died.”

Grace kept her expression calm.

“Why?”

Victoria smiled.

“Because Evelyn wasn’t the first Carter who found out too much.”

Grace’s heartbeat stumbled.

“My father?”

Victoria walked to a wall safe.

She entered a code.

The lock clicked.

“No.”

She opened the door.

Inside was a file bearing a name Grace had not seen since childhood.

THOMAS CARTER.

Her father.

A man Grace had been told abandoned them when she was seven.

Victoria removed the file.

Then she said the words that turned Grace’s entire life upside down.

“Your father never left you.”

May you like

She placed a photograph on the table.

“He was buried under another name.”
