Chapter 6 - The Last Revenge

Luca watched the video twice.

The second time, he showed no emotion.

That frightened Olivia more than rage would have.

Antonio Moretti was alive.

The man who had shaped Luca.

Manipulated him.

Possibly ordered Ethan Carter’s death.

Destroyed Isabella’s life.

Helped build the network that had kept Margaret hidden for decades.

And now he wanted Luca to come to him.

Olivia knew what would happen next.

“No.”

Luca looked at her.

“I didn’t say anything.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Marco stood nearby.

“Boss, we can coordinate with—”

“No police.”

Olivia folded her arms.

“There it is.”

Luca’s eyes hardened.

“He killed your father.”

“That does not make murder suddenly okay.”

“He destroyed my family.”

“So you’ll finish the job?”

“You don’t understand.”

Olivia stepped closer.

“I understand exactly.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

Her voice dropped.

“You think revenge will give you back control.”

He looked away.

“You think if you decide how this ends, all the years he controlled you will finally belong to you.”

His jaw tightened.

“You don’t know what I think.”

“I know what grief does.”

“So do I.”

“Then you know it lies.”

Silence.

Olivia continued.

“It tells you hurting someone will make the hurting stop.”

Luca laughed once.

Cold.

“And what would you suggest? Forgiveness?”

“No.”

That surprised him.

“I don’t forgive him.”

Luca looked at her.

“I don’t forgive Halden. I don’t forgive your father. I don’t even know whether I forgive my mother yet.”

Margaret heard from the doorway but did not interrupt.

Olivia continued.

“But I will not let them decide who I become.”

Luca’s voice was quiet.

“You saved me once. Don’t try to save me from this.”

“I’m not saving you.”

“Then what are you doing?”

“Standing in your way.”

He stared at her.

And something in his face changed.

Recognition.

The same woman who had thrown herself over him on a Midtown street was now placing herself between him and revenge.

Not because she thought Antonio deserved mercy.

Because she believed Luca still deserved a future.

He looked away first.

They created a plan.

Not Luca’s original plan.

That had involved guns, men, doors, and ending Antonio before sunset.

Olivia refused.

Margaret had contacts remaining in the federal system she trusted.

A prosecutor named Rachel Sloan had quietly spent years rebuilding a case against the network.

She arrived with two agents.

Luca hated every second of it.

“You expect me to trust federal agents?”

Rachel looked at him.

“No.”

“Good.”

“I expect you to trust evidence.”

Luca almost respected that.

They decided Luca would go to the warehouse wearing a wire.

Olivia objected.

“So now you’re volunteering to walk into the trap?”

He looked at her.

“You wanted law enforcement.”

“I wanted you alive.”

“I’ll attempt both.”

“Attempt?”

Marco said, “I’ll be outside.”

Luca looked at Olivia.

“You stay here.”

She gave him a flat look.

He sighed.

“I know. Waste of breath.”

She went.

Not inside the warehouse.

But close enough.

The Brooklyn waterfront was quiet after midnight.

Federal teams positioned themselves around the old shipping facility.

Luca entered alone.

Antonio waited.

Halden stood behind him.

Father and son faced each other for the first time in six years.

Antonio smiled.

“You look like me.”

Luca’s voice remained flat.

“That is unfortunate.”

Antonio laughed.

“I missed you.”

“No.”

“No?”

“You missed controlling me.”

Antonio’s smile faded.

Outside, Olivia listened through the receiver.

Margaret sat beside her.

Daniel held her hand.

Inside, Antonio poured a drink.

“You think the Carter girl changed you.”

Luca said nothing.

“She hasn’t.”

“No?”

“You were always weak in one specific way.”

Luca’s eyes narrowed.

“You cared.”

Antonio said the word like an insult.

“Your mother. Isabella. Marco. Your people.”

He leaned closer.

“I spent years teaching you to mistake care for responsibility.”

Luca remained silent.

Antonio continued.

“Responsibility creates obedience.”

Olivia felt sick.

This man understood love only as leverage.

Luca asked, “Did you kill Ethan Carter?”

Halden shifted.

Antonio smiled.

“Direct.”

“Answer.”

“Yes.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

Margaret’s grip tightened.

Daniel looked down.

Inside, Luca’s face changed.

Antonio noticed.

“He was becoming inconvenient.”

“He was a paramedic.”

“He was a witness.”

“He had children.”

“Everyone has something.”

Luca took one step forward.

Antonio continued.

“You’ve killed men.”

“Yes.”

“Then spare me your morality.”

Luca’s voice was low.

“I’m not moral.”

“Good.”

“But I know the difference between what I was and what I want to become.”

Antonio stared at him.

“And what is that?”

Luca thought of Olivia.

A woman in cream clothes kneeling on dirty pavement.

Stay down.

A stranger refusing to leave him.

Because I’m not leaving you here.

Then later:

I will not let them decide who I become.

He looked at his father.

“Free.”

Antonio laughed.

Then Halden drew a gun.

Outside, Rachel shouted, “Move!”

Everything broke at once.

Federal agents entered from the south side.

Marco’s men secured the rear.

Halden grabbed Luca.

Antonio moved toward a side exit.

Luca struck Halden’s arm.

The gun slid across the concrete.

Olivia saw Antonio emerge through a service door.

And she ran.

Margaret shouted her name.

Antonio stopped when Olivia stepped into his path.

He looked almost amused.

“Ethan’s daughter.”

Olivia’s heart pounded.

“You murdered my father.”

“He made a choice.”

“You murdered him.”

“He endangered his family.”

“No. You did.”

Antonio reached inside his coat.

Olivia froze.

Then Luca came through the door.

He had a weapon in his hand.

He aimed it at his father.

Antonio slowly removed his empty hand.

“Do it,” he said.

Luca’s face became the man New York feared.

Cold.

Controlled.

Final.

Antonio smiled.

“You’ve wanted this your whole life.”

Luca’s finger tightened.

Olivia stepped between them.

“Move.”

“No.”

“Olivia.”

“No.”

Antonio laughed softly.

“This is your salvation?”

Luca’s eyes never left his father.

“Move.”

Olivia shook her head.

“If you kill him now, he wins.”

“He killed your father.”

“I know.”

“He destroyed Isabella.”

“I know.”

“He used my mother.”

“I know.”

“He made me—”

Luca stopped.

His voice broke.

Olivia stepped closer.

“He made you do terrible things.”

Silence.

“But he does not get to make you do this one.”

Antonio’s smile disappeared.

That was the first moment he looked afraid.

Because he understood.

Luca was no longer playing his part.

Federal agents surrounded them.

Rachel shouted for Antonio to put his hands up.

Antonio looked at his son.

“Coward.”

Luca lowered the gun.

“No.”

He looked at Olivia.

Then back at his father.

“For the first time, I’m choosing for myself.”

Agents took Antonio.

Halden was arrested inside.

The network’s files were seized.

The third ledger was recovered from the safe deposit box the next morning.

It documented decades of bribery, murder, extortion, political corruption, and hidden partnerships.

It also proved Ethan Carter had died trying to expose them.

But Luca’s battle was not finished.

Federal prosecutors wanted him too.

He had committed crimes.

He had ordered violence.

He had spent years living inside the system his father created.

Olivia knew truth did not erase accountability.

Luca knew it too.

Three days later, he stood on the balcony of his Manhattan residence.

Olivia found him there.

“You’re leaving.”

He nodded.

“Rachel offered a cooperation agreement.”

“What does that mean?”

“I testify. I turn over everything. Businesses. Accounts. Names.”

“And prison?”

“Possibly.”

Her eyes filled.

“How long?”

“I don’t know.”

She looked away.

Luca stepped closer.

“You stopped me from killing him.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You know why.”

“I want to hear it.”

She looked at him.

“Because somewhere between Midtown and Brooklyn, I stopped seeing you as the man everyone feared.”

“What did you see?”

Olivia swallowed.

“A man who was still deciding who he wanted to be.”

Luca touched her face.

“And?”

“And I wanted him to choose well.”

He kissed her.

Slowly.

Not desperately.

Not as a promise he could not keep.

As gratitude.

As fear.

As something neither had expected.

When they separated, Luca whispered, “You saved me twice.”

Olivia shook her head.

“The second time, you saved yourself.”

The next morning, Luca walked into the federal courthouse voluntarily.

Cameras surrounded the entrance.

Reporters shouted.

Marco remained beside him until the doors.

Olivia watched from across the street.

Luca turned once.

Found her.

Then disappeared inside.

Six months passed.

The trials began.

Antonio Moretti faced charges connected to multiple murders and decades of criminal activity.

Richard Halden accepted a deal and testified.

Dozens of officials resigned or were indicted.

Several legitimate businesses tied to the network were placed under independent oversight.

Luca testified for eleven days.

He admitted what he had done.

He did not hide behind his father.

He did not claim innocence.

He took responsibility.

Olivia watched every day she was allowed inside.

Then came sentencing.

The judge entered.

Everyone stood.

Olivia sat beside Margaret and Daniel.

Elena and Isabella sat behind them.

Marco stood near the aisle.

Luca entered with his attorneys.

He looked toward Olivia.

She smiled.

The judge began speaking.

Cooperation.

Responsibility.

Criminal conduct.

Extraordinary assistance.

Risk.

Remorse.

Olivia barely breathed.

Then the judge said:

“Mr. Moretti, please rise.”

Luca stood.

May you like

The judge looked down at the papers.

And began to announce the sentence.
