Chapter 5 - THE SECRET MY BROTHER LEFT BEHIND

The lights went out.
No warning.
No flicker.
One second, Claire was standing in front of me.
The next, the entire office disappeared into darkness.
I heard Noah cry.
A small sound.
A scared sound.
And every instinct inside me changed.
I moved immediately.
Not toward Claire.
Toward my son.
"Daniel, wait."
Claire's voice came from the darkness.
But I was already there.
I found the carrier by touch.
I reached down.
"Noah."
His tiny hand grabbed my finger.
For the first time in days, I felt something other than anger.
Fear.
Not for myself.
For him.
"Everyone stay still," Michael said.
His voice was low.
Controlled.
Too controlled.
I hated that.
Because it meant he knew something.
A few seconds later, emergency lights turned on.
The office was covered in a dim red glow.
Claire was holding Noah's carrier handle.
Michael stood near the door.
And both of them looked toward the hallway.
"Was this planned?" I asked.
Neither answered.
That was my answer.
I stood up.
"Someone cut the power."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
He looked at Claire.
Then at me.
"Because someone knows we found the files."
I looked down at the folder on the desk.
The photographs.
The documents.
The proof that someone had been watching my family.
My phone was still in my hand.
The unknown message remained on the screen.
Ask your wife why your brother disappeared ten years ago.
My brother.
The words kept repeating.
I had not heard that name in years.
Not because I forgot him.
Because everyone told me to stop looking.
My brother, Ethan Carter.
The person my family said had left.
The person everyone claimed had chosen to disappear.
But I knew the truth.
Ethan didn't leave.
Not really.
He vanished.
One day he was there.
The next day, he was gone.
And my father refused to talk about it.
My mother cried every time someone mentioned his name.
I was seventeen.
Too young to understand.
Old enough to remember.
"Claire."
She looked at me.
"Why does this involve Ethan?"
Her expression changed.
Not confusion.
Pain.
"You never asked the right questions."
The sentence hurt more than I expected.
"What does that mean?"
"It means you believed what people told you because believing was easier."
I stepped closer.
"Tell me."
Claire looked at Michael.
Michael nodded slowly.
"It is time."
I hated those words.
Because every time someone said them, my life changed afterward.
Michael walked to the desk.
He opened a locked drawer.
Inside was a small black box.
He placed it in front of me.
"I received this three days before Claire left."
I looked at him.
"From who?"
He didn't answer.
I opened the box.
Inside was a flash drive.
And a photograph.
A photograph of Ethan.
My brother.
Standing beside a man I didn't recognize.
But Claire did.
Because her face went pale.
"Who is that?"
I looked at her.
She didn't speak.
Michael answered.
"Your father."
I froze.
My father had been dead for eight years.
The photograph showed him alive.
At least, that's what it looked like.
"That's impossible."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
He pointed at the photograph.
"What's impossible is what he was doing."
I turned it over.
There was writing on the back.
A date.
Ten years ago.
And three words.
"THE ORIGINAL PLAN."
My stomach tightened.
"What plan?"
Michael looked at me.
"The one that started before Ethan disappeared."
I stared at the flash drive.
My hands felt cold.
I plugged it into Michael's laptop.
A single video file appeared.
No title.
No date.
Only one word.
"CARTER."
I clicked it.
The screen stayed black for several seconds.
Then a voice appeared.
My father's voice.
I stopped breathing.
"If you are watching this, then Ethan failed."
I looked at Claire.
She looked just as shocked.
The recording continued.
"I tried to protect my family."
A pause.
"But I was too late."
The video showed my father sitting in an office.
An office I recognized.
The old family company building.
The one that had been sold after his death.
"I need whoever finds this to understand one thing."
My father's voice became quieter.
"Money was never the target."
I leaned closer.
"The target was the Carter name."
The video distorted.
Then returned.
"There is someone inside this family who has been feeding information to our enemies."
I felt my heartbeat increase.
Inside this family.
Someone.
The recording continued.
"Ethan discovered the truth."
The screen went black.
Then another image appeared.
A document.
A list of names.
I saw my father's name.
My brother's name.
Then mine.
Daniel Carter.
My eyes widened.
The recording continued.
"Daniel must never know."
The room went silent.
I stared at the screen.
"What?"
Claire looked at me.
I looked at Michael.
"Why did he say that?"
No one answered.
The video continued.
"Because if Daniel knows, they will use him."
A pause.
"They will make him believe the wrong people."
My chest tightened.
Because that was exactly what had happened.
I believed Vanessa.
I believed my business partners.
I believed Michael.
I believed myself.
The recording ended.
But one final image appeared.
A handwritten note.
My father's handwriting.
The message was short.
"Ethan is alive."
Nobody spoke.
The silence felt impossible.
My brother.
Alive.
After ten years.
I stepped away from the laptop.
"No."
Claire moved closer.
"Daniel."
"No."
I shook my head.
"Everyone said he was gone."
"Because they wanted you to believe that."
I looked at her.
"How long have you known?"
Claire looked down.
"Three weeks."
My anger returned.
"You knew my brother was alive and you didn't tell me?"
"I was trying to protect you."
"By taking my son?"
Her eyes filled with emotion.
"I was trying to protect Noah."
The words stopped me.
Because she wasn't defending herself.
She was defending our child.
Michael picked up the flash drive.
"There is more."
I looked at him.
"What more could there be?"
He didn't answer.
Instead, he opened another file.
A security recording.
A video from a parking garage.
The date was one week before Claire disappeared.
I watched.
A man walked into view.
A man wearing a dark coat.
He looked older.
Different.
But I knew that face.
I knew it immediately.
Because I had seen it every day growing up.
The man turned toward the camera.
And for the first time in ten years, my brother looked directly at me.
Through the screen.
Then he spoke.
"Daniel."
My blood went cold.
"Ethan?"
The recording continued.
"If you're seeing this, it means Claire trusted you enough to show you the truth."
He looked away.
Like he was afraid someone was watching.
"Listen carefully."
A pause.
"Do not go home."
My breathing stopped.
The video ended.
At that exact moment, the office door handle moved.
Slowly.
Someone was outside.
Michael reached for the security lock.
Claire grabbed Noah.
And then a voice came from the other side of the door.
A voice I hadn't heard in ten years.
May you like
"Daniel..."
The door opened.
